Lessons learned
[edit]- What worked well?
- Good participation
- Good learning
- Good sharing of knowledge learned back in Canada with the French Canadian Wikimedia community
- Good networking with the international francophone Wikimedian community
- Participated in the LinguaLibre project, intent to bring this project in Canada to be used with Canadian Aboriginal languages such as Atikamekw.
- What didn't work?
- Transport, some participants had accomodations too far from the convention venue, missing earlier events because of the train.
- Hotel, some participants were not aware of the budgeted cost.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- Make sure participants have accomodation close enough to the venue with consideration to the schedule.
- Better communication to let participants know of the approved budget.
Learning patterns
[edit]- Grants:Learning patterns/Accommodations at meetups, Better communication to inform attendees of the approved budgeted cost per night for accomations.
- Grants:Learning patterns/Rail travel, Train is good to travel to the event, but is not necessarily good for daily travel to a venue during a conference.
Outcomes and impact
[edit]Outcomes
[edit]- Provide the original project goal here.
- Travel for French-Canadians to the WikiConvention Francophone 2016.
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
- Yes. 6 French Canadians participated in the WikiConvention.
- The French Canadians attended several talks during the WikiConvention, some even shared their own knowledge during them, such as WikiSource. French Canadians present at the WikiConvention also participated in one of the first installations of LinguaLibre, a project to record regional languages, two French Canadians recorded a total of 1,000 words in Quebec French. One of the main advantage of the presence of the French Canadians at the WikiConvention Francophone 2016 was to get to know other francophone contributors from around the world with who they contribute on the Wikimedia projects in French language. They also took the opportunity to meet with Wikimedia France to talk about the upcoming Wikimania Montreal. Members of Wikimedia Canada also got more information from Wikimedia France for different projects.
Progress towards targets and goals
[edit]Project metrics
Project metrics | Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
At least 6 participants. | We had 6 participants. | All targeted active editors that were planned to attend the WikiConvention successfully attended the WikiConvention.
At least 8 countries represented. | 18 | 225% success. With the help of this grant, Canada was represented at the WikiConvention, which allowed the overall projec to achieve its targeted goal.
At least 20 French-speaking Wikimedians coming from outside of Metropolitan France. | More than 30. | More than 150% success. The presence of Canadians greatly increased the diversity of the particpants of the WikiConvention, being the only represetant of North America.
At least 25 Wikimedians participating for the first time to a Wikimedia movement activity. | Unknown to us. | 33% of the French Canadian participants were participating for the first time to a Wikimedia movement activity, helping the project to achieve its overall target.
At least 20 attendees participating actively as speakers or table hosts. | Unknown to us. | Although none of the 6 participants were official speakers or table hosts, some participants shared their knowledge during talks such as about Wikisource and WikiFranca.
Improved regional cooperation, with launch of new cross-border activities or significant improvement of existing ones (related to at least 3 projects) | Month of the funeral art and rites | Thanks to the connections made during the WikiConvention, this event organized in France was extended in Canada.

Global Metrics
[edit]We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.
- Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
- Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."
For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.
Metric | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
1. 6 of active editors involved | 6 | 100% success. |
2. 0 of new editors | 0 | not a target of this grant. |
3. 6 of individuals involved | 6 | 100% success. |
4a. 0 of new images/media added to Wikimedia articles/pages | 0 | not a target of this grant. |
4b. # of new images/media uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (Optional)
5. 0 of articles added or improved on Wikimedia projects | 0 | it was not a target of this grant to directly contribute to Wikimedia projects, but knowledge acquired during the convention have been used to improved Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wiktionary and Wikisource, and shared with other Canadian contributors. 1,000 words in Quebec French have been recorded with Lingua Libre to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and used on Wiktionary. |
6. Absolute value of bytes added to or deleted from Wikimedia projects | Not applicable. |
- Learning question
- Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
- Yes, the participants were highly motivated and in turn motivated the other Canadian contributors. For example, among many other things, some of the participants were only participating to WikiSource at the beginning but have learn about other Wikimedia projects and have been greatly impressed by the Wikimedia movement and shared it with the French Canadian Wikisource community.
