1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

The proposed activities and strategies were implemented through a multi-phased approach to empower LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria to contribute to Wikimedia platforms. Highlighted below are key processes and factors contributing to the outcomes:


Inclusive selection process: An open call for applications was launched, inviting LGBTQ+ individuals to apply for the fellowship. This approach aimed to ensure diversity and inclusivity within the program.

Comprehensive Training Manual: A training module was created to assist with training sessions and provide a guide. The manual includes videos and written explanations of research methodology, citations and references, and introductions to Wikimedia platforms (Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata).

Comprehensive hybrid training sessions: The training used a hybrid approach, with virtual sessions held before and after in-person training. The residential trainings were held in Oyo and Imo states respectively, providing the fellows with hands-on practical training. These sessions provided fellows with mentorship and resources to enhance their skills and contributions on Wikimedia platforms.

Step-down training: Fellows were assessed on the quality and quantity of their contributions to Wikimedia platforms. Three regional fellows (South-East and South-West) were selected to conduct step-down training in their communities. Yes, the project introduced several innovative approaches to empower LGBTQ+ individuals and address the underrepresentation of LGBTQ+ voices on Wikimedia platforms:

Uniqueness: The project is pioneering in its approach, serving as a digital advocacy initiative that offers LGBTQ+ creative writers, photographers, videographers, journalists, and researchers a unique opportunity to utilise their diverse skills to represent LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria and address knowledge disparities through the Wikimedia platforms.

Hybrid Mode of Operation: The project adopted a hybrid operation mode, combining physical and virtual training sessions. This approach allowed for greater accessibility and participation, especially for individuals in remote or underserved areas.

Inclusive contest: The project partnered with Wiki for Human Rights Organization to host a contest celebrating Transgender Awareness. 8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Here are some key learnings: Expanding Beyond Wikipedia: Initially focused on Wikipedia, we realised the importance of other tools like Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Inclusive Selection Process: We broadened our criteria to include all LGBTQ+ individuals interested in contributing to Wikimedia, regardless of laptop access, to tackle marginalisation. Access to Wikimedia Experts: Limited access to experts hindered contributions. We plan to establish partnerships with more Wikimedia experts for better support. Citations and References: The lack of credible sources led to articles being flagged. We plan to collaborate with reliable media sources. LGBTQ+ Wikimedia Online Forum: Creating an online forum will build a sense of community, encouraging continued contributions and participation in edit-a-thons and contests. Self-Taught Virtual Classes: Incorporating pre-recorded sessions will aid learning and skill development, allowing us to measure fellows' commitment through metrics like attendance and participation. Residential Training Duration: The short duration limited impactful outcomes. Extending training sessions will allow for more in-depth exploration and hands-on learning. 9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

The project had a few surprising occurrences during implementation:

Impact: One surprising moment was when someone from Canada reached out via our social media to express gratitude. He discovered an article by one of our fellows about his grand uncle, Dare Odumuye, on Wikipedia. This provided him closure and insight into his uncle's work, highlighting the global impact of our work.

Exploring Other Wiki Platforms: We were surprised by the discovery of Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. This led fellows to switch from Wikipedia to these platforms, finding them more suitable for data entry and multimedia representation.

Fellows' Content Creation: During residential training, it was surprising to see fellows' motivation and eagerness to contribute to LGBTQ+ visibility. They created rich, historically significant content, showcasing their strengths through various projects.

Post-Training Commitment: Fellows' growth and adaptation to using wiki tools post-training were overwhelming. They leveraged their experience with the Wikimedia in-residence, who provided continuous support.

Percentage of Contribution: Initially, Wikimedia platforms had less than 1% LGBTQ+ content. The project significantly increased this content, fulfilling its mission of enhancing LGBTQ+ visibility and representation on Wikimedia platforms.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Extended Residential Training Duration: We will extend future training sessions to allow for more comprehensive learning experiences and deeper skill development.

Enhanced Resource Provision: To address challenges like the unavailability of laptops, we aim to provide loaner devices for participants.

Emphasis on Research Methodology and Citation Practices: We will place greater emphasis on research methodology and citation practices in future sessions. Additional guidance and hands-on exercises will help participants produce reliable content on Wikimedia platforms.

Continuous Feedback and Improvement: We intend to establish a robust feedback mechanism to gather input from participants, stakeholders, and allies throughout the project lifecycle. This feedback will guide ongoing improvements to meet the evolving needs of the LGBTQ+ community in Nigeria.

Collaborative Partnerships and Mentorship Opportunities: Building on successful collaborations and mentorships, we plan to expand these connections. Partnering with a diverse range of organizations and mentors will provide valuable support and resources, empowering LGBTQ+ individuals and enhancing project sustainability.

Step-down and Pop-up Trainings: We aim to expand our reach by increasing step-down training in Nigeria and organizing pop-up training in West African countries. These initiatives will enhance contributions' quality and quantity while promoting inclusion and diversity on Wikimedia platforms.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

One inspiring moment from our project was when someone reached out through social media after reading an article by one of our fellows about Dare Odumuye on Wikipedia. This person had never met their uncle and found the article provided valuable insights and a sense of closure. Their gratitude towards our organization and the Wikimedia Foundation highlighted the meaningful impact of our efforts. I would also share the incredible sense of community and empowerment during the project. Despite challenges, seeing LGBTQ+ individuals come together to learn, create, and advocate for representation on Wikimedia platforms was inspiring. The enthusiastic participation, collaborative spirit, and the transformative impact of amplifying LGBTQ+ voices globally reinforced the importance of our mission.
