Part 1 Understanding your work

[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?

Our strategy, which consisted of 5 steps, is working great so far and we continue to make efforts to complete all of these strategies successfully. It should be noted that we have made significant progress in attracting new contributors to the Wikimedia projects, and we have also made significant progress in increasing and improving the content of the projects through various projects, including online contests and in-person training sessions for newcomers and existing Wikimedia contributors.

Especially it's necessary to note our two projects: 1) WikiClubs - which are currently 5 in Georgia (one was opened in 2022) and they are all very active, with the help of which the content and the number of contributors increasing. 2) WikiCamps, where new contributors learn how to work on Wikimedia projects.

It should also be noted the effectiveness of online and in-person trainings, with the help of which new and experienced project participants learn and improve their skills.

Also, in 2022, Wikipedia UG Georgia has increased its circle of partners and at the moment we are cooperating with the Administration of the President of Georgia and with the Committee of Culture of the Parliament of Georgia. This is a great success in the development of projects and the Wikimedia Movement in Georgia and popularization of them locally. It's also important for the advocacy of Freedom Panorama in Georgia.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?

At the moment, our strategy of attracting new contributors to Wikimedia projects is working great, which in turn helps us increase and improve the content of projects. A series of our trainings, online contests, as well as WikiClubs, which operate in different regions of Georgia, play a good role in this.

Our strategy of cooperation with various organizations and government agencies has also been successful. Wikimedia UG Georgia has been able to build strong partnerships over the past 6 months with the Administration of the President of Georgia, with whom we are working on a draft law to allow the Freedom of Panorama in Georgia, as well as with the Committee of Culture of the Parliament of Georgia, which will also help us to ensure cooperation with UNESCO.

All our projects and programs work effectively and give us the opportunity to build a sustainable Wikimedia community in Georgia and projects on Georgian.

3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?

At the moment we have no serious difficulties and problems. But we are seriously thinking and developing a strategy to keep contributors in our projects so that there is no outflow from projects and all difficulties in projects are resolved effectively.

Another issue is related to operational management, which is associated with the deflation of the USD and the strengthening of the national currency of Georgia - GEL. This caused some inconvenience, and specifically we spent more money due to the gap in the currency exchange.

4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.

The Georgian Wikimedia Community is quite diverse, for example, we have an ethnic minority and we actively help them and involve them in the local Wikimedia community. They are also actively involved in Wikimedia UG Georgia events, such as training series, conferences, online meetings, etc. Also, there is a WikiClub in a region where ethnic minorities live compactly, which ensures the inclusion of ethnic minorities in the development of Wikimedia projects in Georgian, as well as their involvement in the local community.

Also, they always participate in WikiCamps (see: www.facebook.com/wikimedia.ge/posts/pfbid03DsMGLboV283hk27Y9fE6gA63xFexkjNRt1V2qUiS2cbhucjj1XiN1MR3FAu31a5l) and Wikimedia UG Georgia actively conducts various trainings for them on the spot (see: www.facebook.com/wikimedia.ge/posts/pfbid0CDZkvUyCJisjchxUL9xToiQVnpTiAAotnpgPRR6aCY4YicPjgZFSCWKr2kH1NFetl).

Wikimedia UG Georgia also actively continues to meet with its partners and hold various events together with them, including contests and edit-a-thons. For example, in February of this year, Wikimedia UG Georgia, together with the Administration of the President of Georgia, held an edit-a-thon dedicated to the creation and improvement of articles in the Georgian Wikipedia related to the topic of Coronavirus (see: https://president.ge/index.php?m=209&news_id=1516&lng=eng).

We also hold periodic working meetings with our partners. This year we have already held several such meetings in the Parliament of Georgia (see: https://twitter.com/wikimedia_ge/status/1519723390734643205?cxt=HHwWisC52eeXkpcqAAAA) with different committees and in the Administration of the President of Georgia. We also actively participates, by invitation, at the events of our partners.

We actively share all news with the community through social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linkedin), emails, online and in-person meetings, and all news and reports are available on the Wikimedia UG Georgia wiki (ge.wikimedia.org).

5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.

Over the past few years, the Georgian community of Wikimedia has become quite active, which can be attributed to the fact that Wikimedia UG Georgia has actively begun to encourage the community to take active steps, including holding various events, programs and projects. At the moment, the community is actively involved in the life of the Wikimedia movement and is well aware of all the values and mission of the global Wikimedia movement.

It should be noted that the community, through various programs and projects of Wikimedia UG Georgia, as well as participating in events, has already realized the value of continuing to work towards the development of projects and the Wikimedia movement and they are actively making efforts in this direction. The community itself is looking for new affiliation partners to collaborate for the benefit of the Wikimedia Movement in Georgia.

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What have you learned so far about these areas during this period?

We are now well aware of where Wikimedia UG Georgia is strong and what needs to be changed in order to strengthen it in the future, as well as for the sustainability of the organization. This gives us the opportunity to transform the organization from UG to chapter. This year we are going to apply to AffCom for chapter status.

We are well aware of how we need to change our program for the sustainability of the Wikimedia community and projects, where we are going to focus on training, meetings (online and in-person), events and strengthening WikiClubs and WikiCamps.

We will actively participate in global events to get more information, as well as to share our experience with everyone. We will also organize global events locally in Georgia.

We will recognize the importance of partnerships and their sustainability and will therefore pay more attention to the way the partnership network develops, as well as to the sustainability of ongoing partnerships.

7. What are the next steps and opportunities you’ll be focusing on for the second half of your work?

In the next 6 months, our main focus will be on the successful implementation of all programs and projects for this year. In particular, we will focus on:

1) Conducting a training series for new and experienced editors of Wikimedia projects in Georgian. 2) To develop a network of partnerships. 3) To advocate for Panorama Freedom in Georgia at the Parliamentary level. 4) To participate in international and regional events and projects. 5) To contribute to the development of Wikimedia Europe.
