General information[edit]

This form is for organizations, groups, or individuals receiving Wikimedia Community Funds or Wikimedia Alliances Funds to report on their final results. See the midpoint report if you want to review the midpoint results.

  • Name of Organization: N/A
  • Title of Proposal: GLAM-Edu projects in the Land of Valencia – Wikimedia Valencia.
  • Amount awarded: 45875.89 USD, 44533.2 EUR
  • Amount spent: 44533.2 EUR

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

The activities were mainly implemented by the coordinator.

There were different approaches. When there was a relevant partner to work with, direct contact was made in order to develop a program.

When it came to Strategies, the main Strategy was to link relevant projects into eachother, which also needed of strong coordination work. Basically, the project relied a lot in human contact, somehow centralized because of the ammount of people willing to do such tasks.

When it came to individual projects, the different people interested in implementing those did lead their projects, even if strong accompanation from Coordinator was necessary.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

The main strategy to hihglight is the step-by-step approach. The year started with an event with the IVAJ. By the end of the year, formation for youth professionals was held, and the organization gently offered us their facilities to hold a global youth event, which has become the Wikimedia Youth Conference 2023 project. We start by "knowing eachother" and step by step, people get involved into the movement.

Also, direct following worked well. There are cases of people who had been experimenting with Wikimedia, such as the case of Consuelo Sellers in Alicante, who made a wonderful project for her students. Two lessons in her highschool were held and having Movement Organizers getting involved and showing their skills to people with potential to become one is a good approach.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

Antoher effective approach, and somehow innovative, was to link projects when meaningful. For instance, Núria Ferran was developing a research project with PhD students, and we implemented it in the RWitC projects in the Land of Valencia. It's like "killing two birds with one stone".

This approach will somehow continue in the future even without grant, like uploading XIX-earlyXX records provided by a GLAM to Wiki Loves Folklore.

Also, the Wikimedia Youth Conference 2023 is the result of working together with IVAJ, Valencian Institute of the Youth, and the international community of Wikivibrance.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

Coordinating such different communities (existing Wikimedia communities in the region, International WM-communities, GLAMS/Partners in the region, some without experience in our Movement at all, etc) is difficult, or perhaps "time-consuming". Especially when it's not a secret that there exists some strong community problems that have never been locally solved by the affected affiliate.

Generaly, a direct approach was used. The relevant agents, or representatives of the affected communities were consulted and informed of the upcoming events. Communication with WM-ES was positive, and I believe the results are visible.

Highlights of this good communication are the merger of the Wiki Loves Folk and Folklore contests, effective at the local level by 2022 and at Spanish level by 2023 (working with Rubén). Also top highlight the smooth work with Pilar with ICOMM-2023 Wikimedia participation and Wikivibrance initiative in Alicante.

With active local community a periodical mail with news was started, but discarted by mid-year due to desinterest of the relevant people. The few indiviuduals interested in updates were directly approached when relevant.

And with GLAMS or initiative which could create sinergies with existing initiatives, a direct approach was the choice.

5. Documentation of your impact. Please use the two spaces below to share files and links that help tell your story and impact. This can be documentation that shows your results through testimonies, videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, etc.) social media posts, dashboards, etc.

6. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree
G. Increased participants' feelings of belonging and connection to the movement. Agree

7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

One of the premises of the projects was that the current community, yet active, was ageing and small, so there was a need of broadening it with more people, even if less active.

A way to do so was to find partners who would bring us new activities relevant to new people. Also, to create sinergies between projects as a line of work that wopuld bring us to new steps.

Two mayor outcomes happened.

On one side, and thanks to the contacts with the Ministry of Education and Culture, and more especially Ximo López Camps, we were able to participate in a Museums meeting in Benicarló who led to our Telecomunications Museum's project with Valencian Plitechnic University. That project was born in parallel to the partnership with ICOM.

As part of the Edu project, a meeting in partnership with IVAJ was made in March. Even if it had to be switched into virtual due to the war in Ukraine, that partnership led to the upcoming Alacant Wikivibrance event in September 2023.

Those were the kind of sinergies and higher profile activities that were put as an objective at the beggining of the project.

The Photo Archives project went from 2 Archives to 5 during 2023, and we're waiting for the signature of a new one. Also, We're covering 5 archives from La Ribera county, but during the program the necessary steps were made to reach to the 6th agreement in the 65.000 inhabitants city og Alcoi (Alcoià county).

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

How to organize (better) -> Projects more diverse, with more difficulty were made or are going to be implemented in 2023.

To learn from own approaches -> The sinergies bnetween projects works very well,as explained previously. To learn from others: Even despite being in Wikimedia Europe since the very begining, and how fast it has advance, still no learning platforms to have significative outcomes

Wiki Loves Folklore and especially Wikivibrance, provided learnings and also others could learn from the Valencian experience. During the period Wikvibrance did grow a lot, in a lot of different countries, and very relevant partnerships were made.

Also, WM-ES and Wiki Loves Folk joined Wiki Loves Folklore, garanteeing both to keep the memory of the movement and the origin of the projects and to avoid to create duplicities.

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

Yes, it did. Some projects simply became impossible to be held, but luckily they were substitued by different ones.

For instance, one expected outcome was to publish a paper derivated from an expected Erasmus+ project that didn't happen at the end. But, on the other hand, different papers appeared, yet to be published but elaborated during 2022.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

The main objective was to create an infrastructure to create more, bigger and more diverse kind of projects.

For 2023, the biggest deals will be ICOM and Wikivirbance.

When it comes for priorities, I personally believe those haven't changed: the need of growing and diversifiying the community existist, and hopefully the new projects will help to achieve this result.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

The interview in El País explains some of the important things to be told. When it comes to "moments", I guess how the IVAJ partnership, the turnabouts of the Eduwiki event and how everything lead to Wikvibrance is the best story.

Even if the one I have explained the most to my pals is the one related to Ukraine.

12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work. For instance, guides, training material, presentations, work processes, or any other material the team has created to document and transfer knowledge about your work and can be useful for others. Please share any specific resources that you are creating, adapting/contextualizing in ways that are unique to your context (i.e. training material).

Research One paper on the reusage of media files provided by GLAMs in the Land of Valencia to the Wikimedia projects. 1 N/A The original objective was to work with an Erasmus+ project that finally didn't happened.

On the other hand, opportunities happened and had two Academy-related works, one yet to be published.

N/A N/A N/A 1 Not directly obtanied because of the project, but User:Sobaquillo did receive strong companionship in his journey to become a Wikimedian. By hand
N/A N/A N/A 10 Not many of the people intentended to become new Institutional organizers did become one, but fortunately new Institutional Organizers appeared:

Especially successful in the University field, with new IO in Sociology, Filology and Traduction campuses. Arround 7 new University professors started working with Wikipedia in their programs. Also, three University professors are our IO for the ICOM participation next September.

In Museums we won a new IO, and in the Photo Archives project, another one else. In Youth no gains but a strong consolidation of the existing IO.

By hand. Depending on the count, more than 10 IO have been gained, but we still must wait for its consolidation.
N/A N/A N/A 5 Some of the originally intended projects weren't developed or expanded, but newer opportunities appeared.

The work with the Valencian Ministry of Education continued at regular pace

In Universities, more projects were made in UV, and new are being developed with UA and UPV (includes ICOM)

In museums, the Telecomunications Museum's project started

In Youth, the work with IVAJ continued at regular pace and led to Wikivibrance

In Photos, new family archives joined the project and partnerships with the City Councils of Alcoi and Benifaió were signed

N/A N/A N/A 120 Feedback collected. Overall, people likes to partner with Wikipedia, but have difficulties to start or develop projects on their own, which was something we already knew. N/A
Additional Metrics
Additional Metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of editors that continue to participate/retained after activities At least two new active editors (+50 edits year) should be gained from our programs. 2 N/A N/A N/A
Number of organizers that continue to participate/retained after activities We hope to gain three Institutional Organizers, and to gain or regain a very active member, from a pool out of 10 potential IO and 3 potential very active members.

Besides the existing ones, we should have at least one Edu organizer, one on Youth and one new GLAM organizer, when it comes to Institutional Organizers.

4 N/A N/A N/A
Number of strategic partnerships that contribute to longer term growth, diversity and sustainability IVAM: Most visited museum in the Land of Valencia. We have consolidated their partnership in 2021, and we want to make it an strategic partner. Our Institutional organizer’s profile is different to L’Etno, so new opportunities will rise.

Conselleria d’Educació: Valencian Ministry of Education. It must be the core of our “Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom” program. -aka CEFIRE.

Universitat de València: Main university in Valencia. Several projects already working, options to get to new Unis. Thanks to Amparo/Librarian Organizer, we are developing projects in the Universitat d’Alacant.

IVAJ: Valencian Youth Institute, their willingness to co-organize an event and their offer of facilities gives us an opportunity to gain an Institutional Partner with agents through several towns and villages of the Land of Valencia.

Valencia City Council: Several GLAMs depend on them, and they’ve shown willingness on developing different kind of activities, including those who adress genre bias and gaps.

5 N/A N/A N/A
Feedback from participants on effective strategies for attracting and retaining contributors Feedback from selected (and different) activities, we have simplified the objective on 10 feedback pieces from a diffrent activity each month. N/A N/A N/A N/A
Diversity of participants brought in by grantees We don’t want to ask people to share personal information if they don’t want to. At the end of the program we will measure it by checking diversity of content generated, and growth of the community (if they are confortable, they’ll share it without asking).

Our target is to get feedback from the Active editors we want them to became organizers.

3 N/A N/A N/A
Number of people reached through social media publications Not relevant, for us an objective would be to at least keep the amount and diversity of media coverage we receive. Check Communications plan for more info. N/A N/A N/A N/A
Number of activities developed One flagship activity per month, plus a yearly Education program, plus at least 5 events related to GLAMs regular programs (edit-a-thons on Museum’s exhibition and simillar), plus two gender gap activities. A huge success would be to have a “Espai Viquidones” of our own.

Difficult to measure because we aim to activities that won't be one-shots, but long-term programs.

12 N/A N/A N/A
Number of volunteer hours Given the nature of our community, in which people come to events for pleasure, we can easily have activities with six volunteers on it. So, the ammount of volunteers hours can be huge. Only counting in-person events time (so, no organizing time), our community gave 150 hours of their time, and we should surpass by far that ammount in 2022 (we didn’t had in-person events up to May, 2021). 150 N/A N/A N/A

13b. Additional core metrics data.

Core Metrics Summary
Core metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of participants Metric Description: 300 EDU
                              500 GLAM+Events

Returning participants: 10

Only with confirmed projects we expect 300 participants from University Educational Projects (no data yet for Secondary School) and we expect 500 people attending confirmed activities (especially IVAJ/Youth and Valencia City Council project).

It would be reasonable to expect more than 1.000 participants if the project gets funded and we can develop all expected activities and new ones.

800 800 Far more participants in EDU activities than GLAM.

Around 100 people in Secondary School projects Around 100 people in GLAM projects More than 600 people in University projects, including workshops and activities inside of class.

By hand. To be noticed that some strong partnerships (Valencia City Council) with a strong public event planned didn't happened, so even if the numbers match because of the strong EDU project, especially when it comes to Universities, there wasn't a strong public event to be accounted as GLAM.

Also, count of people include projects made outside of the Land of Valencia.

Number of editors Metric Description: 250 EDU
                                350 GLAM + events

Once again, we only target people attending confirmed activities. We should surpass this ammount if we have the availability of developing each project, including those not yet confirmed.

600 600 Once again, most editors come from the EDU side, being most of those University alumni.
Number of organizers 1 Meta-organizer (Francesc)

5 Institutional organizers (Amparo, Bàrbara, three new ones) 6 Organizing team-level organizers (Luis, Montse, Vicenç, Santi, Nino, one new)

Check the rationale and personal infomation in the .doc

12 12 The objective was to win 3 Institutional organizers, from GLAM, Youth and Education fields, and it has been achiveded (and overachieved, when it comes to EDU).
Number of new content contributions per Wikimedia project
Wikimedia Project Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Wikipedia 300 new articles, 2.000 improved articles (mainly Education, also GLAM)

Only confirmed projects, final number might be higher.

2300 2300 Eduwiki projects and edit-a-thon were the core activities where Wikipedia articles were improved. Also, participation in contests (awards by partners, etc) provided a good bunch of edited articles. By hand
Wikimedia Commons 5.000 new files (3.000 GLAMS + 2.000 Wiki takes and contests)

Only confirmed projects, final number might be higher.

5000 5000 Huge numbers of new photos. Even if the Photo projects have been in a starting point, coverage of events provided thousands of pics. N/A
Wikidata At least 1.000 new entries

As stated in conversations with WM-SW organizing the Partnerships hubs, Wikidata awareness in Spain is low when compared with Europe. GLAMs love Wikidata, but they discover it when they meet a Wikimedian and they look for partnerships because of the visibility Wikipedia gives. We could make up to 10.000 wikidata entries only with one partner, but that doesn’t seem a realisitic objective to us right now.

1000 1000 Two dumping of databases: Institució Alfons el Magnànim and Canal Nou. N/A
Wikisource Recurrent event, 100 pages to be improved. 100 100 One recurrent event done in the University for long time now. N/A
N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A

14. Were there any metrics in your proposal that you could not collect or that you had to change?

Yes

15. If you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results, please describe and add any recommendations on how to address them in the future.

I guess this is difficult to be adressed. We write our proposals in a given moment, so we work with "what we have" at a given point. Then, we're expected to implement in one single year, and the situation might change.

Part 4: Organizational capacities & partnerships[edit]

17. Organizational Capacity

Organizational capacity dimension
A. Financial capacity and management This capacity is low, and we should prioritise developing it

17a. Which of the following factors most helped you to build capacities? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Using capacity building/training resources online from sources WITHIN the Wikimedia Movement, Other

17b. Which of the following factors hindered your ability to build capacities? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Lack of volunteer time to participate in capacity building/training, Lack of a need or interest in building these capacities

18. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your organizational capacity has grown, and areas where you require support?

As stated in the 2023 proposal, the objective of being able to organize better, bigger and more diverse has been achieved. The objective for 2023 (even without a grant) is to consolidate those partnerships and IO, but they have a difficulty, being that they need to be accompanied.

19. Partnerships over the funding period.

Over the fund period...
A. We built strategic partnerships with other institutions or groups that will help us grow in the medium term (3 year time frame) Strongly agree
B. The partnerships we built with other institutions or groups helped to bring in more contributors from underrepresented groups Agree
C. The partnerships we built with other institutions or groups helped to build out more content on underrepresented topics/groups Agree

19a. Which of the following factors most helped you to build partnerships? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Staff hired through the fund, Partners proactive interest

19b. Which of the following factors hindered your ability to build partnerships? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Lack of interest from partners, Difficulties specific to our context that hindered partnerships, Limited funding period

20. Please share your learning about strategies to build partnerships with other institutions and groups and any other learning about working with partners?

In the context of Valencia, the 1to1 contact makes sense. Partners know Wikimedia and want to do things, but their knowledge about how to start is really limited, so they need to be accompanied, which is time consuming.

Also, the perception of "GLAM partners want to do things, but they don't know where to find Wikipedia" happens to be true in our context, being that a perception generally discarded by the active Wikimedians. There are a lot of GLAMs who happen to not knowing how to even start with Wikipedia.

Also, those who try by themselves find with the non-friendly newbie culture of es.wiki, which avoids them to keep releasing files until they know the people involed in GLAM. It is an opportunity (and a strong warning about our own weaknesses).

Part 5: Sense of belonging and collaboration[edit]

21. What would it mean for your organization to feel a sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement?

For established members it changed little: they were already "part of the movement". There is a sense of "recognition", and of course, when it comes to newcomers (especially if they are IO), not the Fund but the result of the Fund is very welcome because they feel accompanied in their Wiki-travel.

The Fund has been an entry door for many people wanting to start with wiki.

22. How has your (for individual grantees) or your group/organization’s (for organizational grantees) sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement changed over the fund period?

Increased significantly

23. If you would like to, please share why it has changed in this way.

Partners and newcomers felt accompanied knowing there is a door to ring in case of need. That's the strongest outcome when it comes to this answer. Our partners were people who, literally, had no idea on how to join Wikipedia, and they discovered a world.

The few who already had experience and had projects of their own felt accompanied when they learnt there was a door to knock for help.

24. How has your group/organization’s sense of personal investment in the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement changed over the fund period?

Somewhat increased

25. If you would like to, please share why it has changed in this way.

Obviously, more hours haved been invested, but the alignement with the movement was already high.

26. Are there other movements besides the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement that play a central role in your motivation to contribute to Wikimedia projects? (for example, Black Lives Matter, Feminist movement, Climate Justice, or other activism spaces) If so, please describe it below.

Valencianism and local culture is a strong issue for our core projects (such as the photo archives), feminism plays a central role for newcomers.

Supporting Peer Learning and Collaboration[edit]

We are interested in better supporting peer learning and collaboration in the movement.

27. Have you shared these results with Wikimedia affiliates or community members?

Partially

27a. Please describe how you have already shared them. Would you like to do more sharing, and if so how?

There is a spectrum of the local community and affiliates who are not interested or have lost interest in the results of thr project, so there is no need to "bother" them.

When it comes to the more friendly sectors, such as WM-ES and a part of the Catalan-language community, the results are being shared in a day-to-day basis, as there is continuous work and projects still running in partnership with them.

28. How often do you currently share what you have learned with other Wikimedia Foundation grantees, and learn from them?

We do this rarely (less than twice a year)

29. How does your organization currently share mutual learning with other grantees?

I do have contact with different communities, but I don't know of any channel to share experience among grantees.

Part 6: Financial reporting and compliance[edit]

33. If you have not already done so in your budget report, please provide information on changes in the budget in relation to your original proposal.

No changes.

34. Do you have any unspent funds from the Fund?

34a. Please list the amount and currency you did not use and explain why.

Basically, less expenses than expected, also because of changing situation and changes in projects.

34b. What are you planning to do with the underspent funds?

A. Propose to use the underspent funds within this Fund period with PO approval

34c. Please provide details of hope to spend these funds.

Those funds could be used for Wikivibrance event in September.

35. Are you in compliance with the terms outlined in the fund agreement?

As required in the fund agreement, please report any deviations from your fund proposal here. Note that, among other things, any changes must be consistent with our WMF mission, must be for charitable purposes as defined in the grant agreement, and must otherwise comply with the grant agreement.

36. Are you in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations as outlined in the grant agreement?

Yes

37. Are you in compliance with provisions of the United States Internal Revenue Code (“Code”), and with relevant tax laws and regulations restricting the use of the Funds as outlined in the grant agreement? In summary, this is to confirm that the funds were used in alignment with the WMF mission and for charitable/nonprofit/educational purposes.

Yes

38. If you have additional recommendations or reflections that don’t fit into the above sections, please write them here.
