  • Amount awarded: 45875.89 USD, 44533.2 EUR
  • Amount spent: 946.74 EUR

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?

The strategy is very staightforward: the coordinator acts as a module to accompany partners who are approaching or have been approaching Wikipedia.

The program began in a moment in which a previous work of approaching the partners had been done, and many of them already sent their proposal. There were four projects who experimented changes because of contingencies, and those projects were either adapted into new circustances or substituted by new ones.

The accompaniment of newbies is being done in a very direct way: they contact the coordinator, the coordinator helps them. Most of the newcomers are partners themselves, so there is a work on sharing some experience on them in order to them becoming future organizers or ambassadors.

Another change, and after speaking with the involved local community, was the project being focused on gaining and consolidating new activities and partnerships and leaving the existing community-driven programs in the hands of the existing volunteers.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?

The accompaniment of newbies is a successful approach. Basically, in the Land of Valencia there are experienced organizers and "nothing else". So, any community growth must come from people learning from scratch. The new organizers need a time-consuming accompaniment, but that creates trust, and I'm confident that, in the future, they'll develop as experienced organizers.

Even if in the original plan there was an open possibility on generating specific communication channels, the idea was discarded and the project keeps relying on external channels. Coverage by "El País" is possitive because allows a broader-than-usual coverage which allowed to develop interesting ideas and to share our way and values. External coverage proves as an appropiate strategy because allows us to get introduced to new audiences. And the project has naturally evolved into looking for new audiences, so it makes sense.

The educational projects relies on workshops, seminaries and formation sessions for professors and teachers, who then will apply their learnings in the classroom. That line has proved sucessfull, since it allows to develop a theoretical introduction to the Wikimedia universe, which explores both the history of the movement and its internal functioning, with special attention to regulations and Community Health. People are fascinated by discovering how Wikipedia works, and to a lesser extent the sister projects, and it creates attention, and above all, a greater understanding of how the tools work. To some extent, it generates some fidelity towards the projects and the communities in the teachers who then will develop educational projects.

3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?

From what is planned in September 2021 to what is finally executed, there were changes.

The IVAJ project had to be switched from offline to online because the Ukraine War forced the use of hotel beds to house refugees. Even so, the objective of the program was achieved and in the fall a new training will be developed directly aimed at youth professionals from different locations.

The program with the Valencia City council was cancelled because of budget cuts, but it is being substituted by an upcoming partnership with the City council museums

The paper to be developed by an Erasmus+ volunteer was cancelled when she did not receive the scolarship. That metric has been substituted by other activities which were simillar in nature.

There have been other unexpected situations happening during 2022, and have been managed as well as possible. In general terms, I'm happy with how we have been dealing with unexpected situations, even when the final result might have been frustrating by times.

Less important, the "name of the issue" had also some obstacles. There have been individuals from outside of Valencia complaining of using the name "Wikimedia Valencia". At the end a pragmatic approach has been implemented: we will use whichever name and logo our partner or organizers want to use. And ask WMF permission for it if needed.

The other important challenge was noticing how things advanced slower than expected. In the first half of the year only a few programs could be implemented, and most stayed in design phase. So, from september on, more activities are being expected. Probably the program will not fulfill all of the metrics, because some objectives (ICOMM-2023) cannot be judged at the current moment of time, but at least there will be a decent outcome.

Still, the main challenge is to notice that some things, simply, couldn't be ended by the end of 2022.

4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.

The communication is being done in an horizontal way. In the first half of the year, a mailist has been created for the active members in the Land of Valencia. It hasn't received many atention, but it was a good recall on the then-current state picture. In summer was discontinued, might return in October.

With the broader-involved communities, WM-ES and Amical, the contact is horizontal. Francesc has been involved in a couple of calls and meetings with WM-ES introducing the project, and in touch with WM-ES board members. With Amical there has been less contact (unable to go to an in-person meeting, no online calls being made) but there was a broad contact with community members in the MNAC edit-a-thon, and contact with board members first, and staff later. To be noticed how WM-ES material (photo camera) has been used in activities.

With some editors not aligned with any affiliate, there is direct contact, be it in person or virtual.

When it comes to the non-Wikimedia communities, mainly our partners, which include Uni professors, Secondary School Teachers, project managers of non-afiliate entities, staff and directors of museums, and politicians and public servants, the contact is direct by the coordinator, who is the one accompaning them in order to develop the projects. Updates and possible new ideas for new projects are shared directly with the people.

5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.

The main reflection comes on how some members of the existing community felt weird once the project was published. After all, they were not receiving funding for developing volunteer activities, and they didn't wanted anyone to point at them any contradiction between the volunteer work and the grant funding a coordinator. It was a very legitimate point of view, and that situation didn't affected any existing or future activity.

Taking into consideration that existing volunteer activities were already self-sustainable, the aim of the project focused more on new activities and reaching, taking care of and paying atention to new partners and activities. There is a huge gap between +5 years of experience community and newcomers. Long story short, since 2016 nobody has joined the organized movement, so newcomers have a lot to learn and need a lot of accompaniment. It is time consuming, but it should bring good results sooner than later.

Also, it is somehow difficult to start a community in areas where the is a single Wikimedian. You can sucessfully make them reach a partner, but it is too soon to create a community.

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What have you learned so far about these areas during this period?

"The objective of this proposal is to allow our community to advance to a further step, being able to organize bigger activities and allowing us to welcome more people". And what's what is being implemented right now.

One objective was to learn from the own approaches. It has been done, and, of course, it is something that never ends, we are always learning. Another objective was to experiment. It has been done, with activities never made before (IVAJ mainly). Also Suenawiki provided some experimentation.

When it comes to learning from others, I've been involved in Wikimedia Europe talks, and the Leadership WG as a volunteer role, and also been part of the Wikivibrance Core Team, so I guess the track is the right one when it comes to learnings.

Also, the text said "If successful, we will develop meaningful ways of developing our objectives, and if not, at least we will know what we don’t need to try again. " As answered in the Question 2, the obstacles found have provided a lot of learnings on how to adapt to a changing situation.

7. What are the next steps and opportunities you’ll be focusing on for the second half of your work?

Implementing stuff.

A strong point of the proposal, when it came to visibility, innovation and experimentation, and generating content, was the Valencia edit-a-thon with the City Council. The alderman responsible got no budget for it because of politics, but there are talks with a different area of the city council to develop new projects.

Also, Edu projects for teachers formed in first half, and new formation for Secondary Schools and Youth Public servants. GLAM+EDU + Setmana de la Llengua.

Part 2: Metrics[edit]

Research One paper on the reusage of media files provided by GLAMs in the Land of Valencia to the Wikimedia projects. 1 375 An activity with a lot of expected participants was cancelled (City Council edit-a-thon) and still waiting to see how many activities can be done up to the end of the year. Eduwiki activities work well Accounting by hand.
N/A N/A N/A 125 Edu projects work well, GLAM+Events not that much. Accounting by hand.
N/A N/A N/A 11 The relevant metric are the 4 new organizers.

There are three plausible Institutional organizers, but they need time to develop. Still work needed in order to generate a new organizing-team level organizer.

300/2000 existing articles improved

Edu projects and Online contests generated a lot of new articles, but those aren't as good in order to get existing articles improved.

Additional Metrics
Additional Metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of editors that continue to participate/retained after activities At least two new active editors (+50 edits year) should be gained from our programs. 2 N/A N/A N/A
Number of organizers that continue to participate/retained after activities We hope to gain three Institutional Organizers, and to gain or regain a very active member, from a pool out of 10 potential IO and 3 potential very active members.

Besides the existing ones, we should have at least one Edu organizer, one on Youth and one new GLAM organizer, when it comes to Institutional Organizers.

4 N/A N/A N/A
Number of strategic partnerships that contribute to longer term growth, diversity and sustainability IVAM: Most visited museum in the Land of Valencia. We have consolidated their partnership in 2021, and we want to make it an strategic partner. Our Institutional organizer’s profile is different to L’Etno, so new opportunities will rise.

Conselleria d’Educació: Valencian Ministry of Education. It must be the core of our “Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom” program. -aka CEFIRE.

Universitat de València: Main university in Valencia. Several projects already working, options to get to new Unis. Thanks to Amparo/Librarian Organizer, we are developing projects in the Universitat d’Alacant.

IVAJ: Valencian Youth Institute, their willingness to co-organize an event and their offer of facilities gives us an opportunity to gain an Institutional Partner with agents through several towns and villages of the Land of Valencia.

Valencia City Council: Several GLAMs depend on them, and they’ve shown willingness on developing different kind of activities, including those who adress genre bias and gaps.

5 N/A N/A N/A
Feedback from participants on effective strategies for attracting and retaining contributors Feedback from selected (and different) activities, we have simplified the objective on 10 feedback pieces from a diffrent activity each month. N/A N/A N/A N/A
Diversity of participants brought in by grantees We don’t want to ask people to share personal information if they don’t want to. At the end of the program we will measure it by checking diversity of content generated, and growth of the community (if they are confortable, they’ll share it without asking).

Our target is to get feedback from the Active editors we want them to became organizers.

3 N/A N/A N/A
Number of people reached through social media publications Not relevant, for us an objective would be to at least keep the amount and diversity of media coverage we receive. Check Communications plan for more info. N/A N/A N/A N/A
Number of activities developed One flagship activity per month, plus a yearly Education program, plus at least 5 events related to GLAMs regular programs (edit-a-thons on Museum’s exhibition and simillar), plus two gender gap activities. A huge success would be to have a “Espai Viquidones” of our own.

Difficult to measure because we aim to activities that won't be one-shots, but long-term programs.

12 N/A N/A N/A
Number of volunteer hours Given the nature of our community, in which people come to events for pleasure, we can easily have activities with six volunteers on it. So, the ammount of volunteers hours can be huge. Only counting in-person events time (so, no organizing time), our community gave 150 hours of their time, and we should surpass by far that ammount in 2022 (we didn’t had in-person events up to May, 2021). 150 N/A N/A N/A

8b. Additional core metrics data.

Core Metrics Summary
Core metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of participants Metric Description: 300 EDU
                              500 GLAM+Events

Returning participants: 10

Only with confirmed projects we expect 300 participants from University Educational Projects (no data yet for Secondary School) and we expect 500 people attending confirmed activities (especially IVAJ/Youth and Valencia City Council project).

It would be reasonable to expect more than 1.000 participants if the project gets funded and we can develop all expected activities and new ones.

800 5 We will have 5 partnerships by the end of the year Accounting by hand.
Number of editors Metric Description: 250 EDU
                                350 GLAM + events

Once again, we only target people attending confirmed activities. We should surpass this ammount if we have the availability of developing each project, including those not yet confirmed.

600 1 There is a new editor who arrived to Catalan Wikipedia by his own feet and who has been accompanied by Francesc. His editing interests are mainly Pilota Valenciana game, and we are developing new partnerships with the Spaorts Federation and planning an EDU project with Victor Agulló (Sociologist and Sports-pundit) and the Valencian Pilota Museum (David Sarasol, old friend and pundit).

So, even if he did not arrive by the program and hasn't participated in any program actity yet, we have well covered his interested for the second half of 2022.

Accounting by hand.
Number of organizers 1 Meta-organizer (Francesc)

5 Institutional organizers (Amparo, Bàrbara, three new ones) 6 Organizing team-level organizers (Luis, Montse, Vicenç, Santi, Nino, one new)

Check the rationale and personal infomation in the .doc

As stated in conversations with WM-SW organizing the Partnerships hubs, Wikidata awareness in Spain is low when compared with Europe. GLAMs love Wikidata, but they discover it when they meet a Wikimedian and they look for partnerships because of the visibility Wikipedia gives. We could make up to 10.000 wikidata entries only with one partner, but that doesn’t seem a realisitic objective to us right now.

9. Are you having any difficulties collecting data to measure your results?

It is time consuming when it's not an online activity with a Dashboard.

10. Are you collaborating and sharing learning with Wikimedia affiliates or community members?

Partially

10a. Please describe how you have already shared them and if you would like to do more sharing, and if so how?

With Amical community the only chance I had to share learnings was during the MNAC edit-a-thon, and I did share quite a bunch of info and answered any questions I had, on various topics, including movement governance and other activities I make in the movement not related to the program.

With WM-ES, I've been sharing info on the topics they are interested in their monthly online meeting. Topics include not-related topics such as Leadership WG.
