The Global Open Initiative's mission is to empower Ghanaian youth through volunteering, providing opportunities for them to contribute to open-source projects like Wikipedia while gaining valuable skills and experiences. In our pursuit of this mission, we have established partnerships with various institutions. Therefore, in 2024, we are dedicated to sustaining our partnerships with these institutions, democratising access to information, preserving cultural heritage, fostering community engagement and female participation in Ghana. We propose a multi-faceted project aimed at achieving these goals through four distinct programs. Each program is designed to address specific challenges and leverage unique strategies to maximise impact.

Program 1: GOIF and Partners (Nubuke, Ghana Library Authority, and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)) Workshop and Editathon Series Nubuke Art and Artist Wikidata Program: This program focuses on uploading Wikidata Items related to Ghanaian art and artists. Building on our past programs with the institutions of Wikipedia (2022) and Wiki Commons (2023), we now turn our attention to Wikidata in 2024. We intend to organise a series of four workshops and two contests with the goal of contributing more than 300 items of artwork. We also intend to applaud females who participate in our workshops and provide a special award category for females who participate in our contest

Ghana Library Authority Wikisource and Wikidata Program: This program aims to explore Wikisource, introduce librarians to Mix and Match, and continue uploading items on Wikidata with a focus on library books. It also seeks to connect librarians with the Wiki Librarians user group. In view of this, we will be organising five workshops, each with three library institutions and CSIR, along with one contest for each of the four institutions. These workshops will cover an introduction to Wiki Source, digitization, proofreading, and complying with copyright guidelines and will include practical exercises and demonstrations to reinforce learning. In the organisation of our workshops, we will continue our practice of assigning roles and tasks to volunteers, especially women who are interested in taking up certain roles, such as facilitating the workshop for today, assisting other volunteers etc. CSIR Wikidata Enrichment Program: Our program involves continuing their project of uploading items on Wikidata using Open Refine and exposing participants to Wikidata queries. Challenges Knowledge Accessibility: There is limited access to Ghanaian art and artists' information, historical books, and scientific data. By contributing to Wikidata, Wikisource, and Open Refine, participants will make valuable resources freely available to Ghanaians and the global audience at large, promoting knowledge accessibility.

Copyright Compliance: Knowledge about copyrights is low, and it's crucial for us as contributors to open knowledge to know more about copyrights. By introducing copyrights to volunteers, it will greatly impact their work and help them avoid legal issues.

Sustaining volunteers and partners: sustaining volunteers and partners has been a challenge; therefore, by introducing volunteers to other Wikimedia projects, usergroups, and initiatives, they are able to find new avenues for contribution, collaborate, and have a sense of belonging. Strategies Training and Workshops: All three programs will incorporate training and workshops, both online and offline, to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to engage effectively with Wikidata, Wikisource, Mix and Match, Open Refine, and other relevant tools. Contests: The Nubuke and Effutu program will include contests as a strategy to motivate and engage participants in contributing to Wikidata, encouraging healthy competition and content creation. Experienced Contributors: We will depend on experienced contributors and experts, such as WikiSource contributors and librarians, as a key strategy to guide and mentor participants, enhancing the quality and impact of the programs. Collaboration and Networking: The Ghana Library Authority program emphasises increasing connection and collaboration with other librarians through workshops and engagement with the Wiki Librarians user group.

Progam 2 Democratising Access to Supreme Court Cases through Wikidata: This program is aimed at democratising access to Ghana's Supreme Court cases through Wikidata, an invaluable free database for both the local Ghanaian community and the global arena. This initiative builds upon our prior success in uploading over 600 Ghana's Supreme Court cases to Wikidata and takes a significant step forward in harnessing the potential of Wikidata beyond its traditional Wiki spaces. By developing a user-friendly web app driven by Wikidata's SPARQL queries, we aim to create an extensive repository of Ghanaian Supreme Court cases, fostering greater accessibility and understanding.

Challenge Supreme Court cases are vital for legal professionals, scholars, and society, shaping legal standards and discussions. Yet, limited access to past Ghanaian Supreme Court cases hinders their full potential. Our project aims to bridge this gap by creating an accessible database, enhancing legal research, education, and public empowerment.

Strategies Organising gatherings to engage tech professionals and introduce them to Wikidata. Providing comprehensive training on utilising the Wikidata Query Service. Facilitating collaborative efforts to develop a user-friendly web app. Conducting thorough quality assurance testing to ensure seamless functionality. Program 3 Twi Wikipedia Health Articles Enhancement The "Drugs and Diseases (Twi Translatathon) for Our Twi Community" project is designed to address the content gap on Twi Wikipedia related to drugs and diseases while simultaneously enhancing the quality of corresponding articles on English Wikipedia. Wikipedia has been in existence for several years but lacks comprehensive content and updates in these critical areas. The project targets regions in Ghana with a substantial Twi-speaking population, enabling local contributors to enrich articles in their native dialect. This initiative not only seeks to engage both new and experienced Twi contributors but also aims to raise awareness about the existence of a local Wikipedia platform.

Challenges Content Gap: Twi Wikipedia lacks adequate coverage of topics related to drugs and diseases, limiting access to critical health information for Twi-speaking communities. Limited Community Engagement: The project aims to address the challenge of limited community engagement on Twi Wikipedia, particularly in regions where Twi is widely spoken. Health Knowledge Dissemination: The rise in local TV programs and institutions delivering health information in Twi highlights the growing need for reliable and accessible health content in the language.

Strategies Content Creation: Engage Twi-speaking contributors to create approximately 400 articles on diseases and drugs on Twi Wikipedia. Quality Improvement: Simultaneously enhance corresponding articles on English Wikipedia to ensure consistency and accuracy. Community Engagement: Organise events, workshops, and outreach efforts to introduce new contributors and further engage experienced editors. Collaboration: Foster collaboration with local health professionals, educators, and media outlets to promote health knowledge dissemination in Twi. Awareness Campaign: Raise awareness about Twi Wikipedia's existence and its potential as a valuable resource.

Documentation of Fabric Weaving Types in Ghana This program is aimed at preserving and showcasing the diverse fabric weaving techniques and traditions practised across different regions of Ghana. This project seeks to capture the intricacies of weaving methods, patterns, historical significance, and cultural context, ensuring that this valuable heritage is preserved for future generations. We intend to visit the following weaving communities; Kente Weaving Communities (Adanwomase, Bonwire, Ntonso Agotime-Kpetoe) and Ewe Kente Weaving Communities (Agbozume,Tegbi, Denu).

Challenges Preservation of Weaving Traditions: The project will address the challenge of preserving and safeguarding the rich fabric weaving traditions that are at risk of being lost or forgotten.

Documentation Gap: There is a lack of comprehensive documentation of the weaving techniques, tools, and cultural significance associated with these traditions, hindering their recognition and understanding.

Strategies Field Research: Organise research teams of experienced volunteers to visit weaving communities across Ghana and engage with local artisans to gather firsthand knowledge about weaving techniques. This initiative is designed to enhance participants' writing, communication, and leadership skills while fostering a sense of achievement through contributions to open knowledge. Additionally, the project seeks to promote the use of open-source information, contributing to research transparency. During the implementation of this project there will be focus on the contribution of gender related articles .

Low Article Quality: There's a shortage of well-researched and well-written articles related to Ghanaian culture, history, and current events on Wikipedia and Wikidata. This deficiency limits access to accurate and comprehensive information about the country.

Research Transparency: Encouraging the use of open-source information and promoting research transparency are ongoing challenges within academic and professional circles in Ghana.

Strategies: Awareness Campaigns: Conduct targeted awareness campaigns within universities and professional networks to inform students and professionals about the benefits of Wikipedia and Wikidata for research and writing.

Workshops and Seminars: Organize a series of workshops and seminars covering the basics of Wikipedia and Wikidata, including account creation, article editing, citation practices, and source evaluation.

The project's initial success involved workshops conducted by the GOIF Twi team in collaboration with the Nzema department at the University of Education in Adjumako. Together, they contributed a number of words to Translatewiki and achieved over 400,000 edits in 2023. Building on this foundation, the project intends to organize comprehensive training sessions for students, equipping them with the skills needed to create Wikipedia pages in the Nzema language.

Challenges to Be Addressed: Language Preservation: Indigenous languages like Nzema are at risk of declining and becoming endangered. The project seeks to address this challenge by actively contributing to the preservation and promotion of the Nzema language.

Contests: Organize two contests aimed at encouraging participants to contribute more content to the Nzema Wikipedia, focusing on topics like the Ghanaian parliament and various aspects of Nzema culture and history.

Impact By embarking on the following projects, we achieve the following impact: Enhanced Data and Information Literacy: Participants in these projects will develop skills to find, evaluate, use, and contribute to digital data and information resources, thereby improving data and information literacy.

Empowering Women: By highlighting the participation of women, especially in our Nubuke Art and Artist Wikidata Program and the Ghana Library Authority Wikisource and Wikidata Program, we will empower and encourage female participation.

Increased Knowledge Accessibility: Through initiatives like Wikidata and Wikisource programs, we will provide valuable access to information on Ghanaian art, artists, Supreme Court cases, health topics, and fabric weaving techniques. Thereby promoting knowledge accessibility for Ghanaians and a global audience.

Improve sense of belonging: With our focus on increasing connection and collaboration with other librarians through workshops and engagement with the Wiki Librarians user group as well as engagement with experienced volunteers, we would be encouraging a sense of belonging and encouraging contributions to open knowledge.

The partnerships that GOIF (Ghana Open Innovation Foundation) has established with various institutions and organizations hold diverse characteristics, each contributing to the foundation's goals in unique ways.

1. Academic Collaborations:

  - Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) - Language and Communication Sciences Department: This partnership involves collaboration with the GOIF twi team and the KNUST Language and Communication Sciences Department in creating content in the twi language on Wikipedia and the creation of Lexemes on Wikidata in the Twi language. The GOIF team will utilise the resources in the library of the department and also teach and recruit students as new editors.

  - University of Education, Winneba - Akan and Nzema Department: Collaboration with this department will involve the creation and contribution of content in the Twi Wikipedia platform. It will also involves improving content in the Nzema Wikipedia which is currently in the incubator. This aligns with Wikimedia’s intent to promote open educational resources and preserve languages and cultures.

2. Cultural and Artistic Collaborations:

  - Center for National Cultural, Ashanti Region: This partnership will focus on cultural preservation, heritage promotion, and art-related initiatives. GOIF will collaborate with the Center for National Cultural, Ashanti Region to promote and to ensure that weaving traditions are represented and understood accurately. This will help GOIF support and promote Ghana's rich cultural heritage through this initiative.

  - Nubuke: Nubuke is a prominent art and cultural center in Ghana. Collaborating with them will involve art adding content to Wikipedia on Ghanaian arts. This will also involve utilising the resources in the Nubuke library.
