In 2024 the Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda will undertake a diverse range of programs and strategies. Our initiatives will encompass cultural heritage preservation through Wiki Loves Monuments, documenting football in Uganda via Wiki Soccerthon, co-creating content with and about refugee settlements in Wiki For Refugees, and empowering educators with Wiki4Education. We will also participate in global Wikimedia events like Wiki Indaba, Wikimedia Summit, and Wikimania, advancing knowledge sharing in Africa. Additionally, we will focus on finalizing our strategy development, expanding Luganda Wikipedia, promoting gender equality through WikiGap and Art and Feminism, and contributing to Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, GLAM-Wiki, Wiki For Human Rights.

The approaches and strategies we will implement to achieve our goals will include.

  • Mobilizing our volunteers to actively participate in the different activities, supporting them with things like internet data, borrowing them devices, and transport reimbursements for events to lower the barriers to participation
  • Collaborations and Partnerships. We will strengthen the existing partnerships we have and implement new partnerships with different organizations and institutions in Uganda that are aligned to our goals, these include educational institutions, refugee organizations, government bodies and embassies of other countries in Uganda.
  • Capacity building. We will conduct training sessions and workshops to empower our members to contribute effectively to Wikimedia projects
  • Integrating advocacy across all Wikimedia related projects, to create more reach and impact.
  • Community Engagement. We will conduct community engagement activities to foster a sense of belonging and motivate the volunteers to contribute more.
  • Strategic Planning. In 2022 we started a strategy planning process, which we are finalizing this year. Next year the focus will be on starting implementation of that 5 year strategy.

These programs, approaches and strategies will all contribute to achieving our user group's goals of knowledge sharing, cultural heritage preservation, gender equality, and promoting Wikimedia projects in Uganda.

Amara hub provides space for training in Northern Uganda, Map Uganda will provide laptops needed for the trainings, IRO and Dan Church Aid will expound on knowledge and explore areas of focus in regards to refugees and would avail both human resource and any other related resources needed for the trainings to improve african refugee content on wikipedia and other wikimedia related projects.

OpenStreetMap Uganda: In November 2020, the User Group had developed a memorandum of Understanding to define how the two aligned organizations can collaborate and work together on different projects. The initial stages of this collaboration happened through OSM Uganda inviting members of the User Group to share about Wikimedia with their cohort of interns, and also having OSM Uganda volunteers take part in user group projects: photographic competitions, Wiki Vibrance in 2021, Wikisoccer in 2022, and Wikigap in 2023.

As mentioned above, we will continue to collaborate with OpenStreetMap Uganda on the above, and other projects like Wiki For Refugees, and other projects.

Wikivibrance: The User Group in Uganda will participate in Wiki Vibrance activities to engage youths in the movement. The previous collaboration was during the Africa Youth Month in 2021.

EARTHub: The User Group has hosted East Africa Wikimedians in 2019 at the East Africa Strategy summit in Kampala in 2019. Some of the user group members and volunteers have participated in the research project led by the Wikimedia Community User Group in Tanzania. Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda will play an active role during the pilot and implementation of the EARTHub.

Innolab: The User Group joined a cross affiliate collaboration project to draft a new innovation format for the movement. This collaboration (led by Wikimedia Deutschland) will be utilized for the User Group to get insights, and also share with other affiliates what innovation looks like. Re-Imagining UNLOCK was initiated by and is led by the team Innovation Engine by Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE).

GLAM : We will maintain opportune partnerships with those we have worked with such as The African Studies Bookstore for #EveryBookItsReader ; The Uganda Society Library and Goethe Zentrum Kampala who have provided space for a number of events ; The National Library of Uganda who have provided original source materials for consultation on different projects that we have needed content for ;
