- From the previous pilot project of the Wikisound Audio Speaks Campaign, we have limited our activities to Nigeria only, considering development growth and planning gradual growth. For this year’s program for WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign, We would shift and expand its scope and limitations beyond Nigeria to some African countries and largest communities like Arab, English, and French, in Africa including Ghana, Niger, Gambia, Chad, and the Benin Republic, making six countries in total including Nigeria. This will include different communities from each country, it will give us the opportunity and privilege to onboard 15 different language communities across the above-mentioned communities and countries.
- 8. What are your programs, approaches, and strategies? What are the challenges that you are trying to address and how will your strategies support you in addressing these challenges? (required)
Looking at what we have achieved so far from the previous campaign of WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign 2023, we have achieved all our goals, having many users showing interest and zeal in participating. Looking at the past project work we have addressed some challenges like limitations of resources, limitations of trainings, limited campaign and awareness, limited meet up and a limited use of adequate time we have. Looking at one of the challenges of resources to help us implement our strategic plan and approaches in different communities, this challenge enhance in having limited workshops, trainings and meet-up among local communities to mentor participants to acquire skills in recording, conversation, uploading and linking, that’s to say resources refuse to allow us implement adequate trainings for local communities, the limited trainings, workshops and meet-ups was caused as a result of limited resources, still we have managed to onboard many participants in from four communities that contributed a lot in audio activities. Looking at the limited promotional campaign and awareness in different communities, it resulted in having less participation in Wikimedia Pages Wanting Audio, that’s to say we have less turn over in the contest participation. Some of these challenges are listed below;
- Limited resources
- Limited trainings and workshops
- Limited meet up
- Limited promotional campaign and awareness.
- Less participation in Wikimedia Pages Wanting Audios
- Devaluation in Nigerian currency.
- Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes?
To overcome the above mentioned challenges, we have planned to carry out the project in accordance to the initial plan stated in the WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign project page on meta, and is well explained under Strategic Plan in WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign Page which will be explored further below.
The first move is to start by making general promotional campaign and awareness across all Wikimedia Projects about WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign and the importance of audio files in Wikimedia Movement at large, it is through this campaign editors will show interest to participate, we would then start having meet up with local communities online to fish out the needs required in each communities, also to have local communities way of communication and a means of reaching out to them effectively by a means of an understandable language, also to have local ambassadors and mentors of WSASC. Furthering the progress work, we have acquired what was needed in all communities, because needs most varies among communities, we would then move to implementing workshops, training and peer to peer learning to input audio skills and techniques to participants base on our needs and theirs in having an impactful result. The training and workshops will be taking place consecutively time to time for like four times for different communities, some trainings will be local, while others will be international. Through this, the campaign will get to have mentors and local Language Organizers that will be part of the team of WikiSound audio Speaks Campaign, and that will surely be the foundation to move on with the activities progressively. It is also part of the plan to have two mentors/local Language Organizers from every Wikimedia Community that are native of that language, the Mentors/local Organizers will volunteer in couching editors, enrollments of audio editors and engaging existing editors from their Community to fully participate. Part of the plan is to be having WikiSound audio event (workshops and Edith-a-thon), as well as organizing International Contest and local contest on Audio files, just like how Wiki Loves Africa is contributing with huge number of photos and images, we do believe that audio files will over take the number of images before 2030. Furthermore, mentors and Organizers will be encourage to participate in organizing local events through WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign. Below are some of the plans in summary; Make international awareness across all Wikimedia Projects. Admit two mentors/organizers from each Wikimedia Community. Organizing local Meet-ups and international Meet-ups on Audio files. Mentoring Wikimedians and editors on the activities of audio files. Organizing contest (international and local) for encouragement. Creating tools and application that will help in doing the task of audio files. Collaboration with Individuals, Groups and User Groups to achieve oral language documentation base on each their mandates. Organizing workshops, edit-a-thon and seminar on audio files in Wikimedia Commons. Creating video tutorials on audio files for better experience and understanding.
- The following are the listed strategies and approaches we have in mind that help us achieve this mega project;
- Activities for strategy 1; We would start by creating promotional campaigns and awareness acrosss all Wikimedia projects both on on Wiki and offline, as well as through social media handles using fliers, links, video campaign and PDFs, the camping will draw the attention of the general public and Wikimedians that has the passion of contributing with audio files in Wikimedia projects at large.
- Activities for strategy 2: Audio content creation; Technical capacity building and volunteer recruitment of audio files volunteers/mentors and ambassadors, under this strategy We would be organizing two different events/training and two meet up in a month, the training is going to be one in-person and one online for other Wikimedians to attend online, as the project focus is scheduled to be International, activities like technical audio conversation skills and uploading editing skills, licensing and capacity building workshops in strategic, to improve audio skills among participants and create new audio content and also teach and onboard both new-bies. In addition to the meet ups, is to strengthen the skills of existing editors and to improve experienced editors to develop skills towards contributing in their community, become more productive and potential facilitators or contributors for our programs to be progressive in the overall development of the WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign. Activities for strategy 3; Create promotional videos that help in making both online and offline campaign. Also a event videos will be created to help in passing experience to the upcoming projects like this. Note: this time around other video tutorials will be created in different languages. Also other tools like Spell4Wiki and Lingua Libre video tutorials will be added, together with the previous video tutorial all will be used to help editors and participants.
- Activities for strategy 4; International contest will be organize to support and motivate editors in contributing with audio files alone, as well local contest will be held to motivate local language audio editors. Moreover, Wikimedia Pages Wanting Audio this time around will introduce Wiki Loves Music as part of the contest, the whole idea will be implemented in providing audio files into Wikimedia commons specifically for linking into various pages, that’s to have focus on music not limited to only words pronunciation and other form of audio that was mostly created and uploaded.
- Activities for strategy 4: We would also conduct another oral language research on some topics and other language areas help us find out how languages are, how communication is all about among languages, varieties, accent, evaluations, changes and changes in accent, this will help us determined how to provide audio files accordingly, what pages should we improve with audio files, how to do that and what kind of native people do we need, also audio files available in Wikimedia Commons, from the previous research of WSASC 2023, some of the research was areas was taken out due to limited resources.
- Activities for strategy 5: We would also work effectively to make sure we mentor participants and editors to know audio licenses, technical knowledge in audio adopting the research we have conducted in 2023 on audio and language. Furthermore, mentorship programs on using tools/equipment and application softwares adopting the research work of 2023, training and workshops on recording, conversion, uploading and linking of audio files, participants will also be mentored to knowing different areas and topics of audio files content, like words pronunciation, religious recitation, songs, music, cultural songs, traditional incantation, Animals vocalization, Birds tweets, Natural sounds of water, fire, winds, thunder, rainfall and waterfalls, man made sounds of cars, airplane, trains, e.t.c… To have impact in having the audio files uploaded and link to relevant Wikimedia pages as result of workshops, trainings, online events, meet-ups and conference.

The Nigerian Commons Photographers group, happens to organized an in person Wikimania events last year 2022. where a lot of experience were shared and communities members have the advantage of sharing the same room for workshop, trainings and entertainment.
Thus, with these we as we planned to carry on our group activities, Wikimania is part of the most event missed at the group. - WikiIndaba 2024 for WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign*
WikiIndaba is an annual conference for Africa to Africans in Diaspora. It's a means of connecting, sharing and learning from experience editors in the movement. Connecting the African matter with the Africans in the movement.
WikiIndaba have an annual scholarship, where editors are being supported to attend the event taking place anywhere in Africa.
Most of the time, the scholarship is very competitive, due to limited resources and also high number of applications from different participants that wanted to attend the event to learn and share important experience.
For the 2024 year we have plannned to add the scholarship support to our annual budget, this is for us to be able to have the chance of attending the event as it's important to us and to our community to meet different experienced users, mentors, co-founders and other prominent individuals.
Looking at the great benefit of the events that's what bring the idea, we really like to discuss some of our ideas with the like minds in the movement, sharing experience especially and making broader awareness of our Campaign the Wiki Sound Audio Speaks Campaign among African communities meeting one on one to discuss. It’s known that some ideas, collaborations and team works is more effective physically, and can only be achieved through in person meetings.
We urge to understand that, the best and better method of learning is pear to pear, and discussing with the like minds to improve, up skill, and share experience for better results and resources better management, we do hope this will be well understood towards our participation looking at contributions and dedication we are making so far in Wikimedia movement.

- Description for Wikimedia projects contributions metrics. (optional)
In Wikipedia we would not be creating any article because the campaign is dealing with audio not articles, but still we include 50 articles to be created were audio is applicable for sound linking and impacts. but audio files will be created and to be link to various Wikipedia pages. For Wikitionary there would be need to create words for the audios as language Wikitionaries has less words pages, looking at that there would be need for words creation to have an impactful development of linking the audios created to the words in different languages.
