The Igbo Wikimedians User Group (IWUG) implemented its proposed activities and strategies in 2023 through a multi-pronged approach focused on:

Learning Webinars: we regularly conducted informative webinars to equip members with knowledge about various aspects of Wikimedia projects, including editing tools, content creation techniques, and community guidelines. ii. Edit-a-thons/Translate-a-thons: we organized and participated in numerous edit-a-thons and translate-a-thons focused on creating and enhancing Igbo-related content on Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikisource, and other platforms. These events provided practical learning opportunities for new editors while contributing to content expansion.

iii. Hubs and Fan Clubs: we established three additional hubs and fan clubs in different regions and institutions, nurturing localized communities passionate about Igbo language and culture. 2. Multilingual and Inclusive Approach:

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

- Introducing Wikimedia to Tertiary Institutions: While trying to introduce Wikimedia to institutions, we encountered challenges such as lack of awareness about Wikimedia projects among faculty and students, limited time and resources for integration into curriculum, and potential technical barriers in institutions with unreliable internet access. Improvements: Four subsequent strategies involved targeted outreach to specific departments, offering practical workshops and incentives for participation, and collaborating with IT departments to address connectivity issues. Motivators: Increased institutional visibility and student interest in contributing to open knowledge.

  • New Editors:

Skills and Training:While we couldn't directly address technical skills of new editors, we saw a need for additional guidance and support, gaps in basic editing tools and community norms knowledge. Beginner Trainings,Learning webinars and mentorship programs were effective means of training. Retention: There was increased participant numbers in chat channels and ongoing activities, suggesting some level of sustained engagement due to the Fan Clubs and Hubs. Motivators and Barriers: social media engagement, skill development, and sense of community were potential motivators. Lack of technical abilities, diverse time availability, and inconsistent internet access were also existing barriers. Receiving needed support through mentorship, online resources, and flexible activities improved retention.

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

- Our activities had immediate impact on our community members. For example; one of the mentees became a Wiki Loves Africa Ambassador, another became a Wiki Loves Folklore Ambassador.

  • Community members are becoming more familiar with projects and willing to contribute.
  • Our description translation project that saw over 6k photos added to Commons has now been adopted by Wiki Loves Africa with the objective of making photo contributions more useful.
  • A community member (Pascaline) has now become a certified Snapseed photo editor now offering trainings.
  • Due to the outstanding contributions of community members, we sponsored two highest editors to Wiki Indaba 2023 with partial scholarship.
  • We also collaborated with Wiki in Africa to host a Mini Hackathon which helped bring solutions to some problems the ISA Tool was facing.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We hope to: Continue enhancing content on Wiki projects, to enrich Igbo language across these platforms. Conduct capacity building workshops, focusing on technical aspects and content creation techniques. Expand community reach, collaboration and partnerships. Appreciate contributors through awards or recognitions

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

In 2023, the Igbo Wikimedians User Group made significant strides in advancing Igbo language and culture across various Wikimedia projects. From expanding content creation to embracing diverse community participation, the group witnessed remarkable achievements. Initiatives such as content creation on Wikisource, increased participant engagement, and the establishment of new hubs exemplify our commitment to fostering a vibrant Igbo Wikimedia community. Despite facing challenges like varying technical abilities and diverse time availability, we remain dedicated to furthering its goals.

For us, a sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement is a two-way street and this would mean actively engaging with the community, sharing our passion and expertise, and embracing the movement's values. This would help our organization forge strong connections and feel at home within this vibrant and diverse community of knowledge enthusiasts.

Each time we apply for and receive a grant, it makes us feel like we align greatly with what the movement hopes to achieve and we're bringing in our diversity to make this work.

Yes, the Rising Voices community which is a community of activists working especially in the area of language activism increases our motivation to be in the Wikimedia Movement and also contribute because we also share our projects with them.

In 2023, the Igbo Wikimedians User Group made significant strides in advancing Igbo language and culture across various Wikimedia projects. From expanding content creation to embracing diverse community participation, the group witnessed remarkable achievements. Initiatives such as content creation on Wikisource, increased participant engagement, and the establishment of new hubs exemplify the group's commitment to fostering a vibrant Igbo Wikimedia community. Despite facing challenges like varying technical abilities and diverse time availability, the group remains dedicated to furthering its goals. We want to sincerely appreciate the Community Resources Team for all the support and the Wikimedia Foundation for the Financial support. Looking ahead, the community aims to amplify content, strengthen community engagement, and foster educational collaborations to continue creating visibility of Igbo language and culture on Wikimedia platforms.
