Proposal

[edit]

1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

Igbo Wikimedians User Group is a group of Wikimedians that are committed to working on various wiki projects related to Igbo language and culture. We aim to share free knowledge especially in Igbo Language to make it accessible to people who would not be able to on a normal day. All of our past works and learnings have been in the direction of making knowledge free and available to people who on a normal day wouldn't be able to access knowledge in English or any other language therefore promoting knowledge equity.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

This time, we would like to promote knowledge equity by going into Wikimedia in education. From our experience with our first and second sAPG, trying to help bridge the content gap, recruit/empower more Igbo language knowledge producers and share free knowledge in Igbo language, we realized that over 50% of our members are young people hence, the need to go deeper into tertiary institutions in the South East.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Our main strategies to achieve these changes would include but not limited to: 1. Building partnerships with higher institutions in the South East through the lecturer's pathway. 2. Mentorship programs to help sustain the new editors. We've tested this out through the Wiki Mentor Africa program currently sponsored by Wikimedia Deutschland were we're training young Africans to develop/maintain tools that would benefit the community. 3. Content creation projects (edit a thons, writing contest/competitions, photo contests, wiki campaigns, culture promotion). 4. Community development projects (making micro grants available to community members with creative project ideas that align with the community objectives which would help them grow), partnership with both wiki communities in Nigeria and abroad. 5. Partnership with local organizations and User Groups.

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Some of the activities we would be developing to deliver these approaches would include but not limited to: 1. Organizing online and offline meetups. 2. Monthly learning webinars/Workshops 3. Edit-A-Thons 4.Train-the-Trainer, 5. Photowalk, WikiCamp, Contest, Photo/Media campaign, Wiki Loves campaign, 6. Media outreach campaign, 7. Mentorship programs 8. Joining in movement campaigns

5. Do you want to apply for multi-year funding?

No

5.1 If yes, provide a brief overview of Year 2 and Year 3 of the proposed plan and how this relates to the current proposal and your strategic plan?

N/A

6. Please include a timeline (operational calendar) for your proposal.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1I8qGzEABZsqggDSk3RE9Qqin01fuq3MfsTHx0vr6rQE/edit?usp=sharing

1. User: Tochiprecious - Who is an experienced Project and Program Manager would lead the team as a Project/Program Manager. She would be salaried. 2. User: Udehb - Communications Facilitator experienced in salaried. 3. User: Olugold - Program Assitant who is experienced in program and community management will assist in programs as well as community and hub coordination. 4. User: OtuNwachinemere - Partnership consultant this would be salaried but on contract.

8. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Content Gender gap, Age (regency) , Language, Important Topics (topics considered to be of impact or important in the specific context), Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

8.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

9. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Advocacy, Human Rights, Culture, heritage or GLAM , Open Technology, Diversity

10. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities? Please note, we had previously asked about inclusion and diversity in terms of CONTENTS, in this question we are asking about the diversity of PARTICIPANTS. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Gender Identity, Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language, Age, Digital Access

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?

We have a mentorship program where new editors are adopted and groomed by older editors. We also have a WhatsApp and Telegram group where we're all together and keep participants engaged with edit a thons, learning webinars, meet ups, contests, movement campaigns as well as micro grants to execute their project ideas.

12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?

In our community WhatsApp and Telegram groups as well as during meetings, we reiterate to our members that the Friendly Space Policy applies hence we address each other with respect and

13. Do you have plans to work with Wikimedia communities, groups, or affiliates in your country, or in other countries, to implement this proposal?

Yes

13.1 If yes, please tell us about these connections online and offline and how you have let Wikimedia communities know about this proposal.

We have a WhatsApp and Telegram group We got our community members involved by putting out a notice with a form where community members suggested the kind of ideas/programs they would like to see in the next year. A lot of them came up with their ideas.

14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?

Yes

14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

For the year 2023, we hope to work together with the Twi Wikipedia community in terms of cultural collaboration. This is in line with advocacy and doesn't involve funding, payments, donations etc.

15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?

Just like we looked for other sources of funding for our Wiki Mentor Africa program, we would also be on the lookout for funding support from other organizations as well to sustain our projects.

16. What kind of risks do you anticipate and how would you mitigate these. This can include factors such as external/contextual issues that may affect implementation, as well as internal issues, such as governance/leadership changes.

- Difficulty in accessing tertiary institutions through the Vice Chancellor's office. To mitigate this risk, we'll make the various H.O.Ds and Faculty offices our point of entry.
  • Not meeting the number of target editors. To mitigate this risk, we'll train more number of people than required.
  • Inability to control the Fan Clubs. To avoid this risk, we'll nominate a Fan Club leader for each Fan Club established in the tertiary institutions.

17. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of three options that most apply.

Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Improve User Experience, Ensure Equity in Decision-making, Invest in Skills and Leadership Development

18. Please state if your organization or group has a Strategic Plan that can help us further understand your proposal. You can also upload it here.

No
