Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

Our proposed activities were implemented through people/community members, openness and unity. An adage in the Igbo language loosely translates that when we urinate together, it foams. In other words; unity is power. We tested this in 2022 and realized that community is our power. We got more people involved and realized that they were always willing to help.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

As mentioned earlier, our strategy was community. Using the communal approach and letting everyone know that we were in this together and not just one person leading the troop helped to get all hands on deck.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

Yes, the communal efforts gave openness for people to share their ideas and have them implemented as community ideas and not everyone running off or fear of anyone stealing their ideas.

We also let our community members know that we're not magicians and can't do it all. It was amazing seeing people come up to volunteer and feel very important and useful

Our Wiki Mentor Africa program has helped get more African tools developers into mentorship and tool development/maintenance.

Our Say-it-right project has helped in proper pronunciation of Nigerian names which was low on Wikipedia. Our openness and being a welcoming community has made us accommodate more members who are not Igbo speakers but feel welcomed and connected to the community.

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

We have learnt that working together as a community is important but developing the skills and abilities of our community members while also empowering, listening, giving opportunities and supporting them helps achieve more

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

Yes, we realized that when you give room to people and not micromanage them, they put in more efforts to achieve the vision.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Since we have learnt that people are open and willing, we'll keep being and open community, supporting our members, getting them involved to helps us achieve our goals as one.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

One highlight of our 2022 fund was when we realized how willing the community was to help and support if called on. It all started with wishing community members well on their birthdays. Some were wished well with beautiful fliers carrying their photos while some weren't. Not because we hated anyone but because we couldn't keep up. This sparked a conversation where I asked if people were interested in a committee that collected peoples birth dates, made fliers with their pictures with a template I already designed and wished them well on their birthdays. Amazingly, lots of people were interested. We set up the team and have never had birthday challenges again. This made us realize how willing people are to help if we considered them important.

The year 2022 saw us bringing in more capable hands to support and also made us to realize that people were willing to support in various areas.

We learnt that to build partnerships, you have to identify the need for the partnership, who you want to partner with and the kind of partnership and finally be ready, up and doing. This helped us to better work together with the partners we got in 2022.

Being invited to make decisions that concern us is one way for us to feel a sense of belonging in the movement. Another way is finding a solution to the IP block challenge which makes some of our events unsuccessful and gives the idea that we're specially targeted.

22. How has your (for individual grantees) or your group/organization’s (for organizational grantees) sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement changed over the fund period?

Getting more people involved in the community as volunteers in various decision making areas makes them happy and gives them the sense of being stakeholders.

Language Activism movements help motivate me to keep contributing to keep my language alive while also sharing free knowledge.

Secondly, Black Lives Matter motivate me to tell the African story without waiting for someone else to tell it for us.

We shared lessons on how to recreate programs with Wikimedia Rwanda and Wikimedia Sudan especially in relation to incubator projects.

We do this rarely (less than twice a year)

We rarely do this but informally, we try to guide other communities handle some project difficulties through our experiences

The year 2022 was a good one for the Igbo community. In addition to our metrics, we had 4 member developed projects: Wiki Mentor Africa, Wiki Loves Names, Say-it-right, Lingua Libre. We also had learning webinars to boost the capacities of our members as well as our members getting various positions both paid and volunteer in the global community including WMF.
