  • Amount spent: 4900 USD, 2039200 NGN

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

1. User Group registration. The Hausa Wikimedians UserGroup has been fully registered with the Nigeria's Corporate Affairs Commission. Our registration number is CAC/IT/192786.

2. Our website has been upgraded. Our past projects since before usergroup formal recognition have been documented. Examples: Maiden Hausa Wikipedia Workshop, Second Outreach campaign, Awereness Campaign. Maiden Hausa Wiktionary Project among others.
3. We opened a corporate bank account. We registered with federal and state tax authorities as required by law. Our tax ID is: 1067520203
4. We produced two general-purpose event banners for our programs. This reduced the need for banner production for routine, non-special programs where custom banners are not necessary.
5. We organized four meetings with key stakeholders and general group members and discussed wide-range of issues. In these meetings strategies were developed for capacity building among experienced editors and also training provided to equip our subset of our members with the skills they need to make or oversee quality projects that have clear impact to the Hausa community or movement-wide mission in general.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

The in-person discussions we had were greatly effective in setting the long-term strategies of the usergroup. They proved more effective than virtual meetings as they allowed us to generate and deliberate on more ideas and also communicate personal opinions more openly and arrive at consensus that have broad acceptance more clearly.

The discussions also greatly helped to improve the quality of Rapid Funds applications and reduce effort duplication from our community members. In one of the discussions that took place on December 10th, 2022, we met with all past, current and intending Rapid Funds applicant from Hausa community and deliberated on issues bodering on poor quality of application, duplication of efforts and lack of cooperation and coordination among our members. As results of the discussions and measures we agreed on, duplication of Rapid Funds application from same locations reduced encouraging more group application to foster culture of collobaration for better project implementation.

VIrtual meetings allowed more people to participate and were also effective toward making the entire project successful. We also used survey approach after the conclusion of the project and after some changes regarding Rapid Funds and usergroup programs were implemeneted. It helped and informed our final eveluation of the program which we are now incorporating in our processes for Annual Plan programs.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

One of the learning goals was the impact of the organization incorporation. We believe the registration of the User Group made our governing structure more robust and also made our collaboration with external partners easier. Other organizations and educational institutions generally prefer collaborating or working with known registered organizations. After the registration this proved very useful to us.

Additionally, the registration also allowed us to open and operate a corporate bank account, (which requires organization registration). Corporate account improves our financial management, makes auditing easier and mitigates risks associated with saving Organization funds as well as making outward payments to vendors from personal bank accounts among others.

Another key learning goal was knowledge-sharing among our highly distributed members. Our series of in-person and virtual meetings helped to foster understanding, deliberated on issues hindering development, brainstormed on new ideas and shared practices that worked or have not worked in various places where Wikimedia activities have taken place in our community.

We also wanted to learn the impact of strategies we employed for engendering collaboration by project organizers and grant applicants from our community as well as promotion of key areas where projects for the community would be most beneficial. These proved generally effective and led to improvement in collaboration for Rapid Fund projects in the community.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Unfortunately we were not able to complete this project fully without requesting extension of the project's end date twice. This was partly due to logistics issues of the in-person meetings we had with people from differennt locations and also partly because of some processes (e.g Registration and bank accoutn opening) that were beyond our control and that took longer than we anticipated.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
