Part 1: Project and impact

[edit]

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

We conducted our activities in Dodoma, Tanzania, where we recruited and trained over 15 new editors for the Wikimedia Community. The focus was on writing Swahili articles related to education and African cultures. We organized physical meetups, direct training sessions, online training, and an edit-a-thon. The most effective approaches were physical meetups for community building, direct training for personalized guidance, online training for accessibility, and the edit-a-thon for practical application.

Part 2: Learning

[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: 1. Impact of Capacity Building Workshops: Learning Question: To what extent do in-person Wikipedia editing workshops equip participants with the skills and confidence to contribute to the Challenge?

  • Data to Collect:

* Pre-workshop surveys to assess participants' prior Wikipedia editing experience and comfort level. * Post-workshop surveys to gauge participants' knowledge gain, confidence level in editing Wikipedia, and self-reported editing activity post-workshop. * Track the number of new or improved articles created/edited by workshop participants throughout the Challenge.

2. Effectiveness of Collaboration Strategies: Learning Question: How do online forums, social media groups, and online sessions foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among participants during the Challenge?

  • Data to Collect:

* Monitor online forums and social media groups to track the nature and frequency of participant interactions ( sharing resources, asking questions, offering feedback).

3. Sustainability of Increased Content Creation: Learning Question: Does the Challenge lead to a long-term increase in Wikipedia content creation by participants from the Tanzanian education community?

  • Data to Collect:
              * Track the total number of new or improved articles related to Tanzanian education created throughout the Challenge and for a period following its conclusion. We might use Categories.

From the learning questions and data collected during the project, we learned that in-person Wikipedia editing workshops effectively enhance participants' skills and confidence. Pre-workshop surveys indicated their prior experience and comfort levels with Wikipedia editing. Post-workshop surveys revealed substantial gains in knowledge and confidence, and tracking the number of new or improved articles created by participants provided evidence of practical skill application.

Online forums, social media groups, and online sessions also played a crucial role in fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among participants. Monitoring these platforms showed frequent and meaningful interactions, including resource sharing, questions, and feedback, which helped build a supportive community.

Furthermore, the Challenge led to a long-term increase in Wikipedia content creation by participants from the Tanzanian education community. The continued tracking of articles related to Tanzanian education showed sustained engagement beyond the Challenge. These insights will guide future projects in refining workshop content, improving online collaboration tools, and encouraging ongoing content creation.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Implementing the Africa Wiki Challenge in Tanzania 2024 had both positive and negative surprises. On the positive side, participation rates were higher than expected, and the quality of contributions was impressive.

However, there were challenges such as poor internet connectivity, lack of access to necessary devices, and language barriers, emphasizing the need for better infrastructure and multilingual support. Logistical issues and sustaining participant engagement post-event also posed difficulties, highlighting the importance of thorough planning and continuous community-building efforts. These experiences underscore the need for adaptability, strong planning, and ongoing support for success.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We began sharing our project learnings and results through multiple channels to reach a broad audience. We created a WhatsApp community to facilitate ongoing discussions and updates with participants and interested individuals. On Instagram, we posted visual highlights and key achievements of the project to engage with a wider audience and showcase our impact.

We also used Diff, a platform for Wikimedia community updates, to publish detailed reports and insights on our activities and outcomes. Additionally, we shared our results within Wikimedia platforms to ensure they reached other contributors and stakeholders in the Wikimedia movement. Furthermore, we presented our findings at other community projects and events we attended, allowing us to connect with diverse groups and gather additional feedback.
