Part 1: Project and impact
[edit]1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
Initially, the project comprised two key parts: organizing a competition for both Bangla Wikibooks and Bangla Wiktionary. Later, we decided to extend the project by organizing a photowalk as an additional activity.
For Bangla Wikibooks, we hosted a book-writing competition in which 418 users registered to participate. Among them, 67 users contributed by submitting at least one page for review. A total of 717 pages were submitted in the competition, and after a thorough review process, 624 pages were accepted. This number is 12 times greater than the initial target. The accepted pages collectively contained 1,148,079 words.
The second part of the project focused on Bangla Wiktionary. In this segment, 420 users registered for participation. Out of these, 43 users contributed by submitting at least one page for review. A total of 10,302 pages were submitted during the competition, and after review, 9,249 pages were accepted, which is nearly 10 times the proposed number.
In both competitions, we received a substantial response from both new and experienced contributors, which played a significant role in the overall success of the events. The promotion of these competitions was carried out through central notices as well as Wikimedia's social media platforms and groups. These efforts were instrumental in reaching a wide audience and generating interest among users.
The photowalk was organized in the Bashundhara and Purbachal areas of Dhaka, attracting five participants, a mix of both new and experienced users. As a result of the photowalk, over 300 photos were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

- Work Plan:
1. Create Article List: The preparation of an article list of around 3500+ articles by experienced editors before the contest was instrumental in guiding participants' contributions. 2. Proactive Review and Engagement: Engaging reviewers and organizers before the contest began allowed us to establish a proactive system for addressing critical issues. Regular group conversations were held to enrich the reviewers' capacity and ensure they were well-equipped to guide participants effectively. By addressing issues promptly, such as the inclusion of references in a translated article, we were able to maintain quality standards and encourage active participation.
3. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with this Rapid Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals. Required. Select one option per question. (required)
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups | Agree |
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community | Strongly agree |
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups | Strongly agree |
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives | Strongly agree |
E. Encourage the retention of editors | Agree |
F. Encourage the retention of organizers | Strongly agree |
G. Increased participants' feelings of belonging and connection to the movement | Strongly agree |
F. Other (optional) |
Part 2: Learning
[edit]4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: We have previously organized similar contests twice in Bangla Wikibooks.[1][2] Therefore, we perceive this as an excellent opportunity to introduce newcomers to the project. Through this initiative, we aim to explore the efficacy of such projects in advancing smaller initiatives, understand how to effectively manage and design competitions, identify potential challenges that may arise, and develop strategies to address them. By gaining insights from this experience, we can enhance our approach to future small-scale projects within the community. Additionally, we can use this knowledge to inform and improve similar endeavors in other contexts.

Through the implementation of this project, we gained valuable insights based on the learning questions outlined at the beginning.
One of the most significant learnings was the efficacy of such projects in attracting and engaging newcomers. The competitions for both Bangla Wikibooks and Wiktionary successfully introduced a large number of new contributors to these platforms, confirming that such initiatives can be an effective way to grow smaller Wikimedia projects. Additionally, we learned that organizing contests is an excellent tool for sustaining contributor interest while allowing for significant content creation.
We also gained a deeper understanding of how to manage and design competitions effectively. From the registration process to the submission and review stages, we learned that clear guidelines, regular communication with participants, and providing timely feedback are crucial for the smooth operation of such events. One challenge we encountered was the manual review process due to technical issues with the Fountain tool. This taught us the importance of having backup systems in place for reviewing high volumes of content.
Looking forward, these learnings will inform our future projects. We now have a better grasp of what works in engaging newcomers and ensuring high participation. The insights gained about competition management will allow us to design more efficient and scalable projects, both in Bangla Wikipedia and potentially in other Wikimedia initiatives. We also hope to leverage this knowledge to mentor others organizing similar projects, ensuring that these learnings contribute to the overall growth of Wikimedia communities.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Yes, unexpected events occurred during the implementation of our activities. A positive surprise was the overwhelming response to both the Wikibooks and Wiktionary projects. We received such a high number of submissions that our original article list was quickly exhausted, prompting me and my team to expand the list—a pleasant challenge we hadn't anticipated.
However, during the Wiktionary project, Bangladesh faced the July Revolution in July, which resulted in a 10-day internet shutdown. This was an unexpected event, but we managed to address it by extending the competition end date.
In the review stage of the Wiktionary project, due to the large number of submissions, Fountain froze several times, even after we split the reviews into two batches. Ultimately, we resolved this by manually listing and reviewing the articles on a Wiki page, ensuring the process continued smoothly. These experiences highlighted the importance of flexibility and adaptability when managing projects under unpredictable circumstances.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
Both parts of the project were highly successful. I will be present a session at the upcoming Bangla Wikiconference 2024, where I will discuss the entire project process, share the results, highlight the challenges faced, and reflect on the key learnings. Additionally, I share my experience on the Diff blog, Wikibarta and through the community mailing list.
