Part 1: Project and impact
[edit]1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
The 'Hausa Community Wiki For Human Rights Campaign 2024' aimed to enhance human rights content on Wikipedia in the Hausa language while training both new and experienced editors. Key Activities
Awareness Campaigns We launched online and offline campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of human rights topics, successfully attracting a diverse group of participants from the Hausa-speaking community.
Training Workshops A series of workshops were held to teach the basics of Wikipedia editing, including how to create articles, cite sources, and improve existing content. Specialized sessions focused on integrating human rights themes into articles, using tools like Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Over 50 participants benefited from this training.
Achievements As a result of these efforts, more than 100 human rights-related articles were created or enhanced, covering critical topics such as women's rights, children's rights, and education access in Northern Nigeria. A contest was also organized to encourage participation, recognizing top contributors, especially highlighting the best female and new editors.
Effective Strategies The project’s success stemmed from targeted training on specific human rights issues, which made the content more relevant. The contest structure motivated participants through rewards and recognition. Additionally, experienced editors served as mentors, providing essential support to newcomers. The combination of online and offline activities ensured a broader engagement, making the campaign inclusive and impactful.

Part 2: Learning
[edit]4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: The project aims to assess several key areas of impact, including the improvement of human rights and environmental articles on Hausa Wikipedia, the training of participants in basic Wikipedia editing skills, and the dissemination of awareness about both Wikipedia and environmental rights.
Firstly, we seek to evaluate the extent to which the project enhances the quality and quantity of human rights and environmental articles on Hausa Wikipedia. By tracking changes in article content, depth, and accuracy, we aim to measure the project's contribution to enriching the knowledge base available to Hausa-speaking communities on these critical topics.
Secondly, the project focuses on equipping participants with essential skills in editing Wikipedia. Through structured training sessions and hands-on practice, participants will learn how to navigate Wikipedia's interface, contribute content, and adhere to community guidelines. By evaluating participants' proficiency before and after the training, we aim to assess the effectiveness of our educational efforts.
Furthermore, the project seeks to raise awareness about Wikipedia among target communities. By promoting the platform's accessibility and utility as a source of reliable information, we aim to encourage broader engagement and participation in content creation and editing. Through outreach activities, informational materials, and online campaigns, we will measure the project's success in increasing awareness and usage of Wikipedia among Hausa speakers.
Finally, the project aims to raise awareness about environmental rights within the community. By incorporating educational materials, workshops, and discussions on environmental issues and rights, we aim to foster greater understanding and advocacy for environmental protection. Through pre- and post-program surveys and qualitative feedback, we will assess the project's impact on participants' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to environmental rights.
By evaluating these key areas of impact, we aim to gain insights into the effectiveness of our project in advancing human rights and environmental awareness on Hausa Wikipedia, empowering participants with editing skills, and promoting awareness about Wikipedia and environmental rights within the community.
During the project, we gained valuable insights based on our learning objectives. We aimed to assess improvements in the quality and quantity of human rights and environmental articles on Hausa Wikipedia. Our efforts led to over 100 new or improved articles, significantly enriching the knowledge base for Hausa-speaking communities. Training participants with specific guidelines enhanced their ability to create well-researched articles. We also focused on teaching basic Wikipedia editing skills through structured workshops. Evaluations showed a marked increase in participants' confidence and skills, although some needed additional support for complex tasks like citation integration. Future initiatives will include personalized mentorship. Our outreach raised awareness of Wikipedia as a reliable information source, successfully engaging a broader audience. Participants reported increased understanding of environmental rights through thematic discussions, indicating that combining training with critical topics fosters community advocacy. These learnings will refine our future projects, enhancing training methods and outreach efforts.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
We experienced both positive surprises and challenges. A standout positive was the unexpectedly high level of engagement from new editors, who quickly embraced the training and contributed more content than anticipated. However, we faced significant internet connectivity issues, which slowed their progress. Additionally, some participants were initially hesitant to engage with sensitive human rights topics. We learned to create a more supportive environment and plan better for technical challenges in future projects, ensuring broader and more confident participation.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
We plan to share the learnings from the 'Hausa Community Wiki For Human Rights Campaign 2024' through a post-project webinar, Meta-Wiki reports, and social media highlights. We’ll also present the outcomes at local Wikimedia meetups and conferences to inspire similar projects. This will allow community members to learn from our successes and challenges, fostering collaboration and encouraging more contributors to engage in improving human rights content on Wikipedia.
