General information[edit]

  • Title of Proposal: Hausa Wikipedia Vital Articles
  • Username of Applicant: Uncle Bash007
  • Name of Organization: N/A
  • Amount awarded: 2200
  • Amount spent: 2200 USD, 958000 NGN

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

This project was implemented to inspire Hausa Wikimedians on writing vital articles. A training was created first online and an invitation was shared to Hausa Wikimedians Usergroup on our major platform on Whatsapp. Vital topics were highlighted and shared to the attendees and the need to focus on such vital articles was emphasized during the training. Many participants were delighted about the impact of this project to both Hausa community and Wikipedia at large. An in-person training was also held as many people were invited to the event, followed by an editathon which spanned for a period of 40days (from 20-12-2022 to 31-01-2023).

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

1. The approach of highlighting vital topics were ofcourse effective as many editors don't actually know about vital articles that need more emphasis. Most editors before, just use to edit or create articles randomly, without considering which topics tof ocus. Many appreciated the idea and am sure they will keep on contributing on Vital topics even after the contest

2. Through the trainings held both online and offline, many editors including learn new skills

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Yes, many editors through this project recognise the need to focus on vital articles which increase Wikipedia readability to Hausa community

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Our priority for this project is to educate Hausa Wikimedians on Vital articles and hence, this priority has being achieved as many wikimedians were reached and more than 30 participants contributed to the growth of Vital articles with more than 300 newly created articles and several hundreds improved. The Hausa Wikipedia Vital Articles index have increased more than any other Language wiki on Wikipedia with 1.50 Growth. See link - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias_by_expanded_sample_of_articles

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

There's no much unexpected event, only that almost all the vital articles are relatively long and difficult to translate more especially for editors using smartphones for their work. Some articles cannot be published after translation due to fact that they are very long and have alot of templates and informations. We therefore in this case create short articles or stubs which are later improved.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Yes, more especially with our newly formed WIki hub, we will focus on creating a Wiki Learning classes/office which will be initiated so that newbies will get access to resources that will enable them make contributions efficiently

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

There has being a several campaigns in Katsina and many people are met yet there is still little Wikipedia technical know-how in this region. I will like to organise another campiagn which will use graphical/animation videos as well as using prominent Hausa celebrities (2-3) that will for tutorials and awareness on Wikipedia, promote Wikipedia policies and will be shared through Youtube and social medias
