Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The main strategy was representation of a Pasifika Wikipedian and the activity was presenting at WOW and networking at WOW and ESEAP.

The co-authors Sophia Coghini and Lisa Maule presented WOW as per the proposal. In preparation for the presentation Sophia and Lisa had a number of meetings with each other on and offline to develop the structure and content of the presentation. Sophia held conversation with the other two Pasifika Wikipedians Leilani Sio and Kasi Valu to strengthen her position as the Pasifika advocate for the project.

Lisa Maule and Sophia Roberts are currently programming a Wikicon Wellington (New Zealand) and Sophia Coghini is proposed to be a keynote speaker with a focus on development for Pasifika and Wikipedia in Aotearoa and in the Pasifika region (with the broadest definition of Mana Moana).

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

This most effective strategy was Sophia Coghini being a strong Pasifika advocate in-person during the WOW conference and on through to the ESEAP meeting. The presentation at WOW on the first day opened up many conversations after and onward through the days. It was apparent to us early on in Sydney that Sophia, as a Pasifika person, was a novelty amongst the Australian and ESEAP communities. So not only was our project unique, but the cultural position Sophia brought was unique.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Strengthened and developed future projects led by a Pasifika perspective and helped raise awareness of a Pasifika perspective within the Australian and ESEAP editing communities.

WOW & ESEAP helped encourage Sophia to think further about running a project where she had only ever seen herself as a participator and not in a leadership role. Spohia says of attending the conferences, “It helped me push myself and realise that everything I want to see can be or even start by me. Building future projects and workshops that ultimately give back to the communities that our Pasifika live within.” Being part of both events WOW and ESEAP really supported future planning for events to build content and participants from the underrepresented community of Mana Moana and the Pasifika diaspora.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

We would like to hear different perspectives on our paper, for example ideas of how the project could be modified and applied in other settings, or expanded. FEEDBACK: We got feedback that bringing our personal selves to the presentation was a useful approach and could be done more in events like this. Our stories and connecting with the audience on a more personal level resulted in the audience feeling able to approach us, and be able to talanoa about anything and everything based on the conversations we had afterwards.

We would like to have received constructive feedback, for example things that weren't present in the project that could have enhanced the experiences or outcomes.

We tried to make our presentation short enough so there could be a good discussion afterwards but we did go over time. We would have liked to have a talanoa with those who asked and shared questions and thoughts after our talk to discuss with them further. There were a few few connections that we wanted to foster if I wasn’t so caught up in the moment

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

We were invited to give a keynote presentation at Wikicon Singapore 2023 We were invited to write our presentation up to be published in the peer reviewed journal: New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Sophia had a number of comments and approaches that were uncomfortable. Some anti-racist training may be needed for white folk in the ESEAP region. -A physical example is her personal space being invaded by people touching her head-dress uninvited. More safety around being a Pasifika advocate is needed in the future, a stronger representation from the Pacific Region would support this. To be more inclusive it would be good use some greetings in Te Reo Māori (Māori language) and other Pasfika languages or at least a few references to Pacific islands. Sophia says, “I did not expect these conferences to make me want to attempt a project of my own, least of all something that requires us going back to the villages of our people in the islands, giving back to them as well as hopefully opening their eyes to the many possibilities in their future.” The presentation by the first nations people of Australia in the WOW conference ‘Yarning about First Nations Metadata Descriptions and Access’ Kirsten Thorpe & Nathan Mudyi Sentance aligned very closely with our experiences and presentation. This was extremely interesting. They had a library background and the language they used was quite different to ours but the concepts and experiences, anlalsis and proposals were very much the same.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

New priorities have widened the connection of Wikipedia and Pasifika beyond the arts. Foundationally this connects back to the islands and within the Pasifika communities in Aotearoa and relates to using Wikipedia as a vehicle to go to older people who hold cultural heritage and young learners / children who can bridge technology.

Attempt for a new pilot program now taking what we have learnt and felt toward the previous pilot program and developing from that including evaluation of process and content from the pilot to new outcomes.

Identifying that values are a huge part of working in a Pasifika space and holding workshops that show connections and or differences between each other, developing unity and respect and then building those relationships with the Pasifika artists we interact with.

Work closer with gallery spaces that have previously or in the future plan to exhibit Pasifika artists and have them write up information currently lacking so the living Pasifika artist can have agency and autonomy.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics[edit]

10a. Open Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.

Making the website was a way of directing people to the learning and future project proposals. Sophia and others are going to lead a keynote presentation in the upcoming Wellington WikiCon 11 and 12 March 2023.

As required in the fund agreement, please report any deviations from your fund proposal here. Note that, among other things, any changes must be consistent with our WMF mission, must be for charitable purposes as defined in the grant agreement, and must otherwise comply with the grant agreement.

17c. If you have not already done so in your budget report, please provide information on changes in the budget in relation to your original proposal.

We were granted more than we requested to accommodate for currency conversation and accommodation costs rising as we had to book close to the time of the event. The main variation is we only requested funds for three nights accommodation but stayed on the ESEAP conference. We budgeted NZD$1050 and spent NZD$2630. We got permission to use extra funds to create a website (paid for the domain and website hosting with Squarespace), and to host a debrief dinner with the wider Arts Pasifika participants (although not all could make it).

18. Do you have any unspent funds from the Fund?

No

18a. Please list the amount and currency you did not use and explain why.

N/A

18b. What are you planning to do with the underspent funds?

N/A

18c. Please provide details of hope to spend these funds.

N/A
