R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

At the beginning of 2022 Sophia Goghini and Lisa Maule were part of a Pacific Arts Aotearoa Wikiproject funded by Creative New Zealand the national arts body. We submitted an abstract and had accepted an abstract about this project to the WOW (Worlds Of Wikipedia) Conference 2022 – Sydney, Australia 16 – 18 November (https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/wow-worlds-of-wikipedia-conference-2022/)

The intention of the paper for this conference is to communicate the learning from the Pacific Arts Wikipedia Project to the Wikimedia community. As a summary the learning is about: Making Wikipedia editing more accessible to Pasifika peoples by removal of barriers. Developing and creating content and knowledge about Pasifika peoples through the Wikimedia Foundation platforms. Improving awareness about Wikipedia in Pasifika peoples artists communities

(Pasifika peoples is an inclusive term covering peoples within the Pacific region)

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Our goal in the project and in the presentation about the Pacific Arts Aotearoa Wikiproject is to encourage people who are part of under-represented communities to create and develop Wikipedia projects.

Representation is important and the concept of 'Nothing About Us Without Us' applies. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothing_About_Us_Without_Us) It is a key strategy that the paper is co-written and co-presented by the project organiser (who is palangi / white) and one of the participants (who is Nuiean), in addition there are also the perspectives of an older person with more Wikipedia editing experiences who was the coach in the project and a younger person with no previous Wikipedia editing who was learning about Wikipedia from the perspective of an editor. Being at the conference in person will support engagement with others.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

We present our paper about our project in the WOW conference. Networking with like people and informal conversations who have things we can learn about and who are interested in our project. Be available before and after to give more details about the project and have conversations. We can bring these new insights to the groups we are part of in Aotearoa. We have chosen this conference as the conference theme is closely aligned to our purpose and goal.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Yes the project organiser, a project participant. We have the support of the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand in preparing this proposal.

We are both volunteers in presenting this paper at the conference. Lisa Maule User: Pakoire Sophia Amore Coghini User: Kowhaiarewhana

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Content Gender gap, Geography, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Our project had targets for outcomes that met these content gaps. The projects was about increasing biographies of Pacific Island artists, and there was a 50% target for new articles to be women or non-binary people. The grant is for to present the project and the outcomes to the WOW conference in Sydney.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Culture, heritage or GLAM , Diversity

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

Participants are the people attending WOW, both in-person and online. People will be engaged with in the following ways:

  • The abstract will be available prior to the conference
  • Being at the conference means we will be available to meet with people
  • There will be a recording available after the event
  • We are able to be contacted after the event
10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

In our presentation we will endevour to introduce ourselves and the concepts in a way that invites Pasifika peoples to feel engaged. After the presentation we will respond to questions from people of colour to set the tone as one of prioritising the voices of underrepresented people. We will acknowledge that there may be some triggering content. We will endeavor to make a safe space where people can share their experiences.
