Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

Planning and Strategies Early to Mid-September was the planning stage of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom for Secondary School Students in Kwara State. Firstly, we created awareness for the program online and offline and collated a list of suitable schools with the necessary infrastructure and certified teachers of the RWC 2022 program. We then visited the schools to evaluate their facilities for the program implementation and selected the Schools and Teachers that met the program implementation requirements. We prepared materials and adapted the program guide. we prepared slides presentation for the implementation, adjusted the design for better print quality, made general printing of the course guide and other information materials for the program, and conducted a pre-survey/need assessment for certified teachers. We adopted and Introduced the students to the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Framework as a pedagogical tool to understand the different stages involved in the information cycle, taught the students about Wikipedia's core content policies using a knowledge quest, provided students with the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom quick guide to learn how to integrate Wikipedia into their classroom activities and allowed the certified Teachers of Reading Wikipedia in the classroom(RWC) implement their RWC lesson plan into regular classroom activities for their students.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

We adopted and Introduce students to the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Framework as pedagogical tools to understand the different stages involved in the information cycle, and taught students the Wikipedia core content policies using a knowledge quest.

Most especially we allowed the certified Teachers of Reading Wikipedia in the classroom(RWC) to implement their RWC lesson plan into regular classroom activities for their students and this was most effective in giving the Teachers the opportunity to practice what they learnt in the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom and demonstrate it with supervision and we also improved local content on English Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikipedia Common.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Not applicable to your fund
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Not applicable to your fund
E. Encourage the retention of editors Not applicable to your fund
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Secondary School students in Nigeria are usually not carried along in events relating to Media and Information Literacy due to a lack of infrastructure, adequate devices and information. It was great to introduce the students to Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikicommons and Media and Literacy Information.

The students were more eager to contribute when they learnt that they could make a difference and leave their footprint on the Wikimedia project.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

At the end of the program we were able to certify 45 students and what I learnt was that a lot of the student were not aware of Wikipedia and it benefits to their education and life outside school. A lot of them focus more on their textbook which is good but educating them on the benefit of Media and Information Literacy and Wikipedia has opened a new chapter for them to explore. I also learned that incorporating the student's culture and heritage in the training furthermore encouraged them to participate actively in the training.

Furthermore, using the outreach dashboard and showing them their contribution also excited them. I believe the program met their expectations and a lot of them still contribute to the Wikimedia projects taught to them.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

We had a few issues getting approval from the Ministry of Education to engage the students but we were able to sort it out quickly

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

With the new information I have gathered from the execution of this project, I believe engaging other student outside the school work will be easier for my team.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
