Rapid Fund Final Report

Application type: Tech project

Parts 1-3: Project and impact

1. What was built or achieved during the project, and how did it align with your original goals, milestones and technical plan? (required)

Work packages:

  • WP1—IT system developed with the NAS killer concept with a free software stack for GLAM, task T363818;
  • WP2—configuration for a locally installed Wikibase Suite, task T363819;
  • WP3—GLAM ontologies and vocabularies, task T363820;
  • WP4—GLAM practices, task T363821;
  • WP5—data import, task T363822.

WP1—IT system developed with the NAS killer concept with a free software stack for GLAM

We validated a very cheap server can be procured with second hand enterprise hardware and refurbished and very selected enterprise quality hard drives, using ZFS, the data preservation first file system in Linux.

The procured hardware system is:

  • a donated INTEL Server S1200V3RPL (2014) with
  • XEON E3-1240 V2 PROCESSOR, 8 CORES, 8MB CACHE, 3.40 GHZ
  • 2 GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS
  • 32GB DDR3 ECC UDIMM 1333/1600 RAM
  • 3 HGST Ultrastar He10 (10 Tb) hard disks (refurbished), configured as a ZFS filesystem volumen
  • a Samsung flash drive Gunmetal Gray 64 GB
  • 1 Unraid license
  • an external USB hard disks adapter for backups
  • an Salicru SPS ONE UPS (donated) with new batteries.

WP2—configuration for a locally installed Wikibase Suite

We are very near to have an operative Wikbase Suite configuration for LAN/intranet use, which is not the current product goal of the WBS development team.

WP3—GLAM ontologies and vocabularies,

We have identified the set of ontologies and vocabularies, required for our internal prototype used as project test bed, particularly CIDOC-CRM, which is being recognized as the ontology of reference, for museology first and for other GLAM domains later, and some complementary others: CMD INTERVIEW PROFILE, CRMdig, Thesaurus for Graphic Materials, FRBRoo and RightsStatements. Also, now we are familiar on how to manage or integrate ontologies and how to implement then in Wikibase.

WP4—GLAM practices

We couldn't find the time to start the exploration of how to model a body of knowledge for GLAM.

WP5—data import

Very very recently, we have been released the tooling and method for creating and upload a CIDOC-CRM based ontology implemented for Wikibase.

2. Share links that demonstrate your project's impact, usage, and technical outcomes. (required)

Required links:

  • Project page on relevant Wikimedia spaces (e.g. Phabricator, Wikimedia projects, Toolforge)
  • Code repository (e.g. Gerrit, GitHub or GitLab)
  • Documentation or user guides
  • Dashboards, metrics tools, or analytics used to track usage or contributions

Optional links you may include:

  • Diff or mailing list announcements
  • Community feedback
  • Demos or product presentations
  • Survey results or user testing feedback
  • Examples of integrations or usage within Wikimedia projects

3. What are the key lessons you learned during this project, both technical and non-technical? (required)

  • This has been more hard and work intensive than expected, mainly because Wikibase, as a product and as a ecosystem, still lacks levels of maturity, so we have to learn a lot of about MediaWiki and all related technologies.
  • The same happen with ontologies development and management. We have the luck of finding an analogous effort from NFDI4Culture group, from which we learn about practicalities and tools that we reused.
  • We found a new spreading and development opportunity with some academic Wikimedians members that led to the creation of the DHwiki WG in which we are contributing a very important amount of experience (and despair)  gained along the project, becoming a relevant contributing partner.

4. How did the Wikimedia community or your target audience engage with your project during its development or release? (required)

  • Finding synergies with the Wikimedian academic community on Digital Humanities had been a extraordinary happy accident. We feel this will open new opportunities for funding and development.
  • The Wikibase team at Wikimedia Germany has been really accessible and supportive, as they understood the nature of the project and the synergies has been obvious.
  • The Hispanic American GLAM Wiki community show great interest with the initial proposal and, finally now, we are ready to offer them practical results and artifacts for their interest.
  • However, we found weird our proposals for the GLAM Wiki 2025 conference weren't of  the interest of the evaluators.
  • The Wikibase Statekeholder Group (WBSG) show initial interest on the project, but chose to wait time until practical results were available.
  • And the Wikibase community in Telegram has been supportive enough to be able for us to fill the MediaWiki platform gaps.

5. What risks or challenges did you encounter (related to delivery, safety, or security), and how did you address them? (required)

  • The technological challenges has been explained and has been solved with the help of the community and devoting larger than expected amounts of time.
  • We tried to experiment with contractors for technical support, but the practical results have been suboptimal.
  • Our main problem has been funding. We work with the Almería City Hall but some contracts were delayed for months because bureaucracy. We also looked for funds in calls like 4D.cat and NGI Zero Commons, but with zero success. OTOH, we expect to fully or partially fund new development with the City Hall and participating in European consortia projects. Indeed we are currently part of two proposals, one of then to be resolved in the coming weeks.

6. Who will maintain the project going forward, and what is your plan for long-term maintenance? (required)

For LaOficina this is an active effort with no dead end. We have bet a lot of internal resources, we have get partial funding from the city hall of Almería and bet on developing the Very Small GLAM concept for building a cutting edge knowledge graph supporting the future Cinema Digital Documentation Center for the history of the international filming production in the province of Almería and for any other digital humanities effort suitable for it. At least, as long as we are able to fund it. The leadership will be kept by Ismael Olea.
