Part 1: Project and impact
[edit]1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
The purpose of the grant was to fund a project aimed at seniors writing Wikipedia. It was called "Seniori píšu Wikipédiu" in Slovak, "Seniors writing Wikipedia" in English. There were two runs of the project, one in fall 2024 and one in spring 2025. Both involved an in-person workshop composed of 6 (fall) or 5 (spring) sessions. These sessions were 3 hours long with about 20 minutes of a break in approximately the middle. They were attended by a number of seniors. In both cases, the number of registered people was 10 but the actual attendee numbers varied. For the fall run, 8 people attended and made edits; for the spring run it was 9 people who attended and made edits. We learned to run workshops more efficiently (more on that later). Working with the Bratislava City Library also proved quite fruitful as they were able to provide a well-equipped room with a great location, promoted the event somewhat and were rather flexible and welcoming. Renting a space for the fall run from a school ended up being more expensive, more crammed and less flexible (doors had to be open manually for people joining later etc.).

Additionally, share the materials and resources that you used in the implementation of your project. (required)
For example:
- Training materials and guides
- Presentations and slides
- Work processes and plans
- Any other materials your team has created or adapted and can be shared with others
We made a curriculum draft for the fall run: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1udUMVuq8udXpWZO_mYJLquNeFaNyhG44Cbk1stkGxjY. It was not followed strictly. For the spring run, we followed https://sk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redaktor:KormiSK/Prv%C3%A1_str%C3%A1nka and intuition a lot more. There was not enough capacity to develop a full-scale guide.

Part 2: Learning
[edit]4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: We can use this project as another learning opportunity for further similar projects in the future.
Over the course of the project we learned that it is best not to talk too much. Somehow we tended to do that, to give the seniors (or other interested parties) a good explanation of what the core principles of Wikipedia are, how things work, how to edit. A lot of questions were asked and answered which led to many other question. Eventhough we wanted to speak less we somehow ended up speaking more. For the second run, we did explain the idea behind Wikipedia and how things are done but focused a lot more on the practical demonstrations rather than the theoretical. After a demonstration, we let the seniors do the work and provided mentoring as needed. The spring run had better availability for mentors and so each was able to help 2-3 seniors which proved quite effective. There was also a bigger emphasis on suggesting work they could do between the sessions. Another thing we learned is that we have to do the preparatory phase even earlier than we think. There are often last-minute complications and uncertainties that come up, in most cases, the venue. It is also good to have someone write notes as to what happened during the course of the event. This was helpful many times since, also in writing this review. The notes can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ecWqGiGErUS-iwazp-s4ew9RcTKctRuH/edit
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
The synergy was actually greater than expected. One of our members, Filip, did a great job with 1on1 mentoring. He is the youngest but worked very well with the seniors. I think it brought out a talent in him. During the first run, we were able to recruit a new member to WMSK. We were likewise glad for the word-of-mouth that spread about the project since Facebook was not really as effective as we had hoped. The hosting library was also able to spread the word quite well. And lastly, a higher than expected number of mentors was able to take part in the project.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
We discussed the learnings and results internally. Matej also submitted a talk proposal to Wikimania 2025 (which was not accepted) and to the 2025 CEE Meeting (yet to be decided).
