Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

Kurume Institute of Technology held a "1Lib1Ref" type workshop. Students filled out worksheets, reviewed their contents, and then edited them.

Meihokan High School Hakata SNEC's "MyPro" is an inquiry-based learning program in which students decide on their own topic, research it, and present their findings. The process is similar to Wikipedia, so reflecting on Wikipedia may be useful for someone else.

At Imajuku, the members of local history circle created a new article about a local burial mound using materials from the local library and explained how photographs taken as hobby can be displayed on Wikipedia to make the article more engaging.

"BIZCOLI" explained that there is still a lack of things and images to be included in Wikipedia and that treating local information like an encyclopedia can increase civic pride.

The "Western Japan Library Council" explained that by holding a Wikipedia editing event, they expect to make effective use of library resources, improve the reference skills of librarians, and increase the number of users with a clear purpose.

"The Kitakyushu Science and Research Park Academic Information Center Library" explained how Wikipedia works. We also had a hands-on editing experience of "Shitagaki-Pedia," by Mr Racco.

The Hirado Library has a commemorative book collection of Teisuke Oki, but it was not reflected in Oki's article, so Mr Racco edited it on the spot and the four librarians deepened their understanding of Wikipedia.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

I decided that the best way to get a large number of people attending an event or class with no editing experience to understand the Wikipedia editing system in a limited amount of time would be to have each person write on a worksheet and then project it on the screen while I explained and showed them how to edit.

For those who wanted to experience actual editing, I lowered the psychological hurdle by allowing them to try editing freely on the "Shitagaki-pedia" site that I maintain.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

The phrase "underrepresented groups" is a very sensitive one. I have also explained the usefulness of university libraries to college students who, for example, have had to spend two years without being able to actually attend college due to Covid-19, and the strong connection between Wikipedia and libraries.

Meihokan High School Hakata SNEC is a place where high school students with developmental challenges can receive a regular high school education with special needs. He explained that the exploratory learning process there, called "MyPro," is similar to editing a Wikipedia article, so Wikipedia provides an opportunity for someone far away to become knowledgeable.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

At Kurume Institute of Technology, some students commented that their preconceptions about Wikipedia had changed, and that they wanted to try editing the page after learning that they could do it by themselves. At the editing event in Imajuku, the participants wish to continue the editing event in the future, and at BIZCOLI, there is a movement to enhance the articles by uploading more photos from Kyushu area to the Commons. At the Western Japan Library Association, a person working on diversity is interested in WikiGap and has begun to work toward its realization, and at Kitakyushu Science and Research Park, there is a desire to hold a Wikipedia Town competition between universities.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Mr Racco tried to explain the current status of the article to college students using an example of a familiar subject they know, but because of the generation gap between them and him, he ended up using a Wikipedia article on a 1980s pop group that was not very familiar to them as an example. The value of "everyone knows" may be a very difficult illusion to achieve these days.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

WikiShootMe https://wikishootme.toolforge.org/ We are looking for ways to use tools like WikiShootMe to see how Wikipedia reflects things like the proximity of an event to the area where it is taking place.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics[edit]

10a. Open Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.

Open Metrics Summary
Open Metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
questionnaire Ask university students to fill out questionnaire after the lecture and editing workshop. 136 109 The number of students attended the class "Information, Media and Culture" at Kurume Institute of Technology and also the number of their comments written about the class. Through the lecture on Internet literacy and Wikipedia by Mr Racco, most of the students wrote that their understanding were largely enhanced. Some students were encouraged to use Wikipedia more than before and some students were interested in editing the articles by themselves. The number of university students attended class was counted using the attendance cards.

After the lecture and workshop, the students were asked to write comments about the class as class assignment. In the "1Lib1Ref" type workshop, the students filled out the worksheets using the books from the libraries to add the references to the articles.
