We had a successful Wikidata 11th birthday celebration as well as our second meetup as a user group.

On the first day of our meeting, Saturday, 2 December 2023, we held a Wikidata editing session and we had two new female participants who signed up as Wikimedians and contributed.

On the second day, Sunday, 3 December 2023, we announced the highest editors and presented them with prizes of T-shirts and caps, and gave cash prizes as well. We also announced the leaders of our Zaria Hub which signalled the establishment of that very hub. We had in attendance, a news agent who covered our event for greater publicity of our activity. We celebrated Wikidata's birthday with the cutting of the birthday cake. We had a great meet-up as well.

2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)

Part 2: Learning[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: I would want to learn about edit tracking tools and know how to teach others to use them. I as well want to learn about how many people would like to be active contributors to Wikidata through our meetup.

I have actually learned more things than I have ever in the past about the Outreach Dashboard. Unlike in the last event, in this very event, I would say I worked on the Outreach Dashboard with a better understanding.

About knowing how many people would like to be active contributors to Wikidata through out meetup, it, unfortunately, escaped my mind to ask that question during the event. But then, we the event organizers are still in touch with those present during the event. We have a group on Telegram and WhatsApp where we communicate important messages with them. Hopefully, we would touch on that as time goes by and teach them basic editing via short screen-recorded YouTube videos.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Yeah. We had to move our event from 4-5 to 11-12 to 18-19 to 25-26 November 2023, until finally we settled for 2-3 December 2023, all due to the unavailability of the fund to carry out the event. We hoped to have received the Rapid Grant fund for this event earlier, but we had to keep postponing till we were sure we would get it on a certain date. Even on that certain date, we received the funding on the very day our event was to begin, and we only managed to pull through by making alternate arrangements. In it wasn't really a pleasant suspense.

Due to this, the amount of participants we hoped to get, we couldn't get them, but we still got a few to attend and it was all fun. Usually, December is a month filled with activities and many people do travel for holidays or go for weddings and other activities. That partially robbed us of the people that would have been present.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

As earlier said, our social media handles play the major role in our communications with the community. During the event, we had a one-day edit-a-thon, and new and existing participants participated in editing Wikidata. At the end, the highest editors for both male and female categories (1st and 2nd) were gifted branded T-shirts and caps, as well as given cash tokens for their efforts. Images of this could be found on our Facebook handle: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0ag588qSdRKvouAWFLLUaGi18iJiApYZEJvSGygywEdS3s611UGj5UsWFwfr5KJXtl&id=100079297245129&mibextid=Nif5oz

After that, the rest was meet-up.

9. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? (required)

No

9.1. Please state what difficulties you had. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

Part 4: Financial reporting[edit]

10. Please state the total amount spent in your local currency. (required)

918600

11. Please state the total amount spent in US dollars. (required)

1033.84

12. Report the funds spent in the currency of your fund. (required)

Provide the link to the financial report https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1laCLPTNTO1S8ZI8bX4rGRXP6G3ZEUGKnxWeyuF2Dy8Y/edit?pli=1#gid=0

12.2. If you have not already done so in your financial spending report, please provide information on changes in the budget in relation to your original proposal. (optional)

Although noted in the budget already, here is a quick summary of the difference between the two proposals:

  • We got our event publicized by a mass media outfit, KSMC, as a way of reaching out to the wider public on what we are and are out to achieve.
  • We also had to get fuel to power our generator to be able to design graphic images and the document to be used for the event and slides due to poor energy supply, rendering us helpless.

Apart from these, there re no other deviations from the original proposal.

13. Do you have any unspent funds from the Fund?

Yes

13.1. Please list the amount and currency you did not use and explain why.

We have a balance of NGN 204,600.00 of unspent funds. This is because the sum meant for the fiscal sponsor was mistakenly doubled in the initial proposal, so there is a total sum of NGN 93,600.00 to that effect. Also, the total number of people we expected would show up (30) didn't. Only about 16 people + one staff of the venue we used + one representative from Wikimedia Nigeria Kaduna Network also participated.

13.2. What are you planning to do with the underspent funds?

A. Propose to use the underspent funds within this Fund period with PO approval

13.3. Please provide details of hope to spend these funds.

I seek PO permission to use the underspent funds alongside the NGN 43,100 from our previous event (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/Tyap_Community_Rapid_Grant_Proposal_June_2023_(ID:_22194074)/Final_Report ) to fund our follow-up edit-a-thon organized for our new hub members in the university town of Zaria to keep up the editing momentum after the training event which happened between 14-29 October 2023. Please find the link to the Outreach Dashboard for that purpose: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Tyap_Wikimedians_User_Group/Tyap_Wikimidia_Zaria_Hub_Assigned_Articles_(4_-_31_December_2023)/

We also have a WhatsApp group for the Hub, where we communicate our work progress daily. Please find the link to the group here: https://chat.whatsapp.com/HhzHwr3hQKnJIDG9cEWO8B

Also, part of these funds could help us out in carrying out basic tasks involving logistics and energy supply support for petrol for power generation to support the editing work. Please find a breakdown of what I intend to do with the remaining funds here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DrrmIbsn4jhZLkjOFAQmqlT1-WgocwEG8AKiZl19UQo/edit#gid=0

If the PO doesn't find the above reason reasonable enough, the remaining funds could be channelled to our next grant. Thanks.

14.1. Are you in compliance with the terms outlined in the fund agreement?

Yes Your response to the review feedback. 14.2. Are you in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations as outlined in the grant agreement?

Yes

14.3. Are you in compliance with provisions of the United States Internal Revenue Code (“Code”), and with relevant tax laws and regulations restricting the use of the Funds as outlined in the grant agreement? In summary, this is to confirm that the funds were used in alignment with the WMF mission and for charitable/nonprofit/educational purposes.

Yes

15. If you have additional recommendations or reflections that don’t fit into the above sections, please write them here. (optional)

This is an appreciation to the Foundation for supporting our cause, ensuring that we do not lack the basic funds needed to make our events successful. Kind regards!

Review notes[edit]

Review notes from Program Officer:

Applicant's response to the review feedback.

Greetings, Dear Program Officer.

After the "<a href="https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/Tyap_Community_Meetup_and_Wikidata%27s_11th_Birthday_Anniversary_Grant_Proposal_(ID:_22282315)/Final_Report">Tyap Community Meetup and Wikidata's 11th Birthday Anniversary</a>" event for which this report was made, we had a balance of about 204,600 NGN. This, together with the balance of 43,100 NGN from the grant we got before this one, i.e., the "<a href="https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/Tyap_Community_Rapid_Grant_Proposal_June_2023_(ID:_22194074)/Final_Report">Tyap Community Rapid Grant Proposal June 2023</a>", made up the total sum of 247,700 NGN remaining as balance, as of December 2023. However, after conceiving the idea of having a post-event edit-a-thon for the new hub we created in the university town of Zaria, I requested in this report to allow us to use the remaining funds to fund the edit-a-thon.

Unfortunately, the program happened before we got a response to this report to authorize us to use the remaining funds. This was caused by the need to keep the new editors engaged. We lacked the financial power to motivate them and had to use the 247,700 NGN balance to fund that. Please find the link to the spending budget for the "Tyap Wikimedia Zaria Hub Editing" edit-a-thon organized by the Tyap Wikimedians Organisation between 2 January and 31 March 2024 here: <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1voHVdzEaZScCfL3Y8_WISzmNbqAgjEEmRIkRYX-4ysE/edit#gid=0">https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1voHVdzEaZScCfL3Y8_WISzmNbqAgjEEmRIkRYX-4ysE/edit#gid=0</a> . Also find the link to the edit-a-thon page on Meta-Wiki here: <a href="https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tyap_Wikimedians_Zaria_Hub/Mini-projects/Tyap_Wikimedia_Zaria_Hub_Editing">https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tyap_Wikimedians_Zaria_Hub/Mini-projects/Tyap_Wikimedia_Zaria_Hub_Editing</a> .

I would like to confirm that we still have a balance of about 5,150 NGN left after the edit-a-thon ended on 31 March 2024. I request that it should be deducted from our next rapid grant proposal (https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/Atyapland_WikiOutreach_2024_(ID:_22586467) ) if it gets approved.

Thanks and warm regards,

Levi
