Part 1: Project and impact

[edit]

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

Implemented Activities and Results Achieved:

The project was executed in multiple phases, starting with community visits to the Ashanti Region and Greater Accra to map stakeholders and assess their knowledge on sustainable development. This helped in designing a need-based workshop, guided by sustainable development experts, which ensured effective engagement.

The next phase involved building a list of articles related to sustainable development, identified through community insights and desktop research. These articles were curated to address knowledge gaps and were selected for translation into Twi and Ghana Pidgin languages.

The third phase focused on collaboration with the Twi Department at KNUST and the Ghana Pidgin Wikimedian Community to recruit and train 25 translators. Each team of translators, consisting of seasoned and new volunteers, was paired to translate and record five articles within 14 days, promoting collaboration.

During the main conference, a workshop was conducted for 50 stakeholders, including NGOs, youth groups, and traditional leaders. The workshop showcased the translation work and provided training on using Wikimedia projects for sustainable development advocacy. Sign language assistance ensured inclusivity.

After the conference, a 5-day social media campaign was launched to promote the project's outcomes, emphasizing inclusion and language diversity in sustainability efforts, with links to related Wikipedia articles.

Effective Approaches:

  • Stakeholder Mapping: Helped in designing targeted workshops that addressed real knowledge gaps.
  • Collaborative Article Translation: Enhanced engagement and the quality of outputs by pairing experienced and new volunteers.
  • Partnerships with Educational and Community Groups: Leveraged existing relationships to ensure successful training and Surveys and their results.

Part 2: Learning

[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: In working on this fund proposal, my aim is to learn how to create engaging training sessions for Wikimedians. I want to figure out ways to cover topics that interest participants and keep them motivated. Also, I'm eager to discover how to get volunteers from like-minded organizations involved to make our projects successful.

Moreover, I'm interested in getting better at spreading the word about Wikimedia projects in local communities. I believe this will help get more people involved and excited about what we're doing. Overall, I hope to learn a lot that will help me create fun training programs for Wikimedians and improve my grant writing skills.

The implementation of the Wiki-Green Conference 2024 provided several key learnings from as a grantee and an organizer. These learning includes:

1. Using interactive and hands-on training sessions which were effective in keeping participants engaged and motivated. I will incorporate these elements to enhance learning experiences in future programs .

2. I have improved on my skills of creating relevant Content for programs. Through organizing the conference I was able to aligning training topics with participants' interests, which was gathered through

the conducted surveys, This ensured that the sessions were valuable.

3. Partnering with local organizations enriched the project by bringing diverse perspectives and resources. Future initiatives will continue to seek similar collaborations.

4. Effective communication strategies, including social media and workshops, were essential for community engagement. Structured outreach plans will be developed to sustain local interest.

5. Writing the grant proposal highlighted the importance of clear articulation of goals. My future grant writing will benefit from these insights, making the proposals more focused and compelling..

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

During the implementation of the Wiki-Green Conference 2024, a few unexpected situations arose:

1.The call for volunteers saw unexpectedly high enthusiasm, particularly from younger community members, leading to increased engagement and highlighted the potential for future projects to attract a more diverse group of contributors. However, this interest created logistical challenges, as the number of volunteers who supported in the per-conference events and wished to attend the conference exceeded the budgeted capacity for in-person participants.

2. Working with local organizations and institutions was more successful than expected, bringing in extra resources and volunteers. However, managing activities across different locations was challenging due to scheduling conflicts and delays in distributing resources. This taught the team the importance of coordinating early with partners to avoid such issues.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

8. Other Metrics results.

In your proposal, you could also set Other Metrics targets. Please describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used if you set Other Metrics in your application.

Other Metrics name Metrics Description Target Result Tools and comments

9. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? (required)

Yes

9.1. Please state what difficulties you had. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

One of the challenges faced was relying solely on the outreach dashboard to collect data. Since the dashboard tracks all edits by participants, it also records contributions to unrelated topics, making it difficult to isolate edits specific to the project's focus.

In the future, we plan to explore how to use the dashboard to filter edits and add tags based on pre-selected topics or categories. This will help ensure that only relevant contributions are included in the project's data analysis.
