In developing countries like Ghana, talks about sustainable development are more or less reserved for the elite class, governmental officials and folks in academia. The language barrier further widens the gap as conversations on sustainability are mostly in English other than native languages.. In rural communities and less-privileged urban communities where people are highly impacted by the detrimental effects of poverty, climate change, gender inequality and other threats to sustainability, there is little or no conversation on this critical subject of sustainability.
In an attempt to address this challenge, the Wiki-Green Conference 2024 seek to run a conference In Accra, Ghana after visiting a local community in the Ashanti Region of Ghana and less-privileged urban community in Greater Accra. The event seeks to bring together stakeholders to engage in a conversation on how to leverage the Wikimedia projects and use them as tools for effective education on sustainable development. Stakeholders like NGOs, civil society groups and community groups will be trained on how to use translation and the audio features of wikipedia and commons. In this workshop special attention shall be given to People with hearing impairment by providing sign language assistance.
A major activity of the workshop shall be training participants on how to translate articles to local languages ( Twi and Ghana Pidgin) and also to add audio in the local languages to articles. Again, participants shall be trained on how to upload sign language videos on sustainable development on Commons for the benefit of people with hearing impairment and to also reiterate the need for inclusion in the sustainable agenda.

PRE-CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES Phase One:The first phase shall be a community visit to selected communities in the Ashanti Region and Greater Accra respectively. The Ashanti Region is selected because it is central and it is the home of the most widely spoken local language in Ghana - Twi. The objective of the visit shall be to map out Stakeholders and engage them to fully ascertain their level of knowledge in sustainable development. This will fall into designing a need-based workshop that will create the impact needed. Experts in Sustainable development in the team (Otuo-Akyampong and Maxwell Beganim) will lead this phase. We shall produce a mapping of stakeholders by the end of the phase. This phase is expected to be completed in 10 working days.
Phase Two: Phase two shall involve building articles list that have significance to sustainable development in the selected communities. Knowledge from the community visit and desktop research will help us identify the exact knowledge gaps on sustainable development in the community that must be bridged. Wikidata queries will be employed to refine the process of building a relevant list of articles for the projects.The main objective of this phase is to produce a list of articles that are important to understanding sustainable development and can be translated into Twi and Ghana Pidgin language. This phase is expected to last 5 working days with about 100 articles and shall be led by Stephen Dakyi.
Phase Three: This phase involves a collaboration with the Twi Department of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the Ghana Pidgin Wikimedian Community to carefully select 25 (10 males, 15 females) seasoned translators. The Project team has a working relationship with the Twi Students Association and the Ghana Pidgin Wikimedian Community, which we seek to leverage for a successful partnership.They shall be trained virtually on wikipedia and translation and then paired with old volunteers from the Accra and Kumasi Wiki Hub respectively to translate given articles and add audio recording. The team will partner with a recording studio,where translators can book a date to record. A team (pair) shall compose a newbie volunteer with expertise in language translation and an old volunteer who understands the wikimedia projects. Five articles shall be allocated to each team to work on in a period of 14 days. This further reiterates the collaborative article writing philosophy which played a vital role in Wiki Green Conference 2023.
CONFERENCE PROPER
Phase 4: Event day, This phase shall involve a well organized workshop for selected stakeholders in the community who have the potential to effectively use the wikimedia projects as tools in their work to promote sustainable development. With knowledge from the Stakeholder mapping that was done in Phase 1, Fifty carefully selected stakeholders (from NGOs, youth groups, traditional leaders, information center operators, People with Disability, etc) shall be invited to a workshop. The workshop shall have a two point agenda:
To showcase the translation and audio work that has already been done by the volunteers in Phase three of the project as a case study for the participants on how the wikimedia projects can be used as tools for sustainable development education
To train participants on how to collaborate and use the open resource - Wikimedia projects in their advocacy and daily activities.
Sign language assistance shall be provided during the conference for inclusion. We expect a total of 50 participants. The entire team is responsible for the organization of the conference.
POST-CONFERENCE Phase 5: Social Media Campaign, This phase will include making the project get an online presence. Immediately after the conference, 5 days will be set out to share photos, videos, content on Inclusion and bridging the Language gap in a Sustainable future on all social media platforms with links to articles on wikipedia.

Stephen Dakyi(User:NanaYawBotar) is experienced Wikimedia Volunteer and event organizer, with a background as a trained event and campaign coordinator under the auspices of the Wikimedia Foundation through the Organizer's Lab Project. He spearheads the Ghana Histo Cita-thon project and serves as the Founder of the DABY Foundation, while also advocating for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and youth empowerment. He is the project lead and shall coordinate the overall program, He will also provide training and be in charge of communication.
Otuo-Akyampong Boakye (User:Otuo-Akyampong_Boakye) is an educator, open knowledge enthusiast, and passionate Wikipedian who is driving change and empowerment through his dedicated work. He is the president of Eco-Warriors Movement. He is the convener of the Kumasi Wikihub, a vibrant community space where volunteers come together to share, learn, and collaborate on various open knowledge initiatives
His role in the team is to lead Stakeholder Mobilization, Conference organization and technical discussions. He is a volunteer

Pre-Activity Engagement:
Before the activities commence, we will utilize our existing communication channels, such as the WhatsApp group and Twitter, to disseminate information about the upcoming events. Regular updates, announcements, and relevant resources will be shared to generate interest and encourage participation.
We will create promotional flyers and advertise them on various social media platforms to attract attention to the event.
As part of our partnership agreement all partners will promote the event and its outcome on their various communication channels.
During the Activities: During the events, active engagement will be fostered through hands-on interactions, feedback sessions, and collaborative efforts in editing workshops. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences, ask questions, and contribute to the ongoing activities. The goal is to create an inclusive and participatory environment that values diverse perspectives.

In working on this fund proposal, my aim is to learn how to create engaging training sessions for Wikimedians. I want to figure out ways to cover topics that interest participants and keep them motivated. Also, I'm eager to discover how to get volunteers from like-minded organizations involved to make our projects successful.
Moreover, I'm interested in getting better at spreading the word about Wikimedia projects in local communities. I believe this will help get more people involved and excited about what we're doing. Overall, I hope to learn a lot that will help me create fun training programs for Wikimedians and improve my grant writing skills.
