Part 1: Project and impact

[edit]

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The WikiTour 2024 initiative saw five members of Kelab Wiki Kent deployed to UPSI Perak, five to JPN Sarawak, and thirteen to SMK Sandakan to conduct workshops focusing on Wiktionary and Wikimedia Commons. These workshops aimed to educate participants on contributing to Wiktionary by inputting words and crafting sentences, and to Wikimedia Commons by uploading and categorizing images. The training sessions covered Kadazandusun and other minority languages such as Bajau, Suluk, and Sungai, underscoring the program’s dedication to linguistic and cultural diversity.

Main Activities and Results: ACTIVITIES: 1. Introduction and Overview The workshops commenced with a comprehensive introduction to Kelab Wiki Kent and the Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia (WCUGM). Participants were oriented with the objectives and functionalities of Wiktionary and Wikimedia Commons, setting the stage for the training.

2. Wiktionary Training Participants engaged in practical exercises on how to input new words into Wiktionary and construct sentences with these words. The training covered a range of languages, including Kadazandusun, Iban, Bajau, Suluk, and Sungai, emphasizing the importance of documenting and preserving linguistic diversity.

3. Wikimedia Commons Training The training included detailed instructions on uploading images to Wikimedia Commons, including understanding copyright policies and selecting appropriate categories. Participants actively practiced uploading their images, gaining insight into the impact and benefits of sharing freely usable media.

RESULTS The workshops achieved significant engagement, leading to meaningful contributions to both Wiktionary and Wikimedia Commons. Participants demonstrated increased enthusiasm and proficiency in creating and uploading content. The initiative effectively highlighted and preserved minority languages and cultural heritage through the Wikimedia platforms, enhancing global awareness and accessibility.

Key Processes and Contributing Factors PROCESSES: 1. Preparation In UPSI Perak and JPN Sarawak, the pre-selection of participants allowed for a streamlined workshop experience, as account creation was completed before the sessions began. This advance preparation enabled the workshops to focus on content creation, rather than administrative tasks. Conversely, at SMK Sandakan, where participant IDs could not be collected in advance, the substantial team of Kelab Wiki Kent members ensured that account setup and workshop execution were handled efficiently. Their presence facilitated a smooth process despite the initial constraints.

2. Training Delivery The workshops were meticulously structured to include both introductory explanations and hands-on activities. Each session began with comprehensive demonstrations, which were followed by practical exercises designed to reinforce learning. This approach enabled participants to effectively apply their new skills and engage deeply with the workshop content.

3. Community Engagement Robust collaboration with local educational institutions and community organizations played a critical role in the workshops' success. These partnerships provided essential support and resources, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the sessions. Additionally, the significant number of Kelab Wiki Kent members present at each location ensured effective facilitation and individualized assistance, further contributing to the workshops' positive outcomes.

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS The success of the workshops was significantly bolstered by the robust support from local institutions and community groups. Their active involvement and resources were crucial in ensuring the smooth execution of the sessions. Additionally, thorough preparation, including the pre-collection of participant IDs and meticulous organization of materials, played a key role in the seamless running of the workshops. The strength of the team, especially the large contingent of Kelab Wiki Kent members at SMK Sandakan, was also instrumental in facilitating efficient account creation and fostering active engagement among participants. This combination of community support, advanced preparation, and a strong team presence contributed to the overall effectiveness and success of the workshops.

Dos and Don’ts Dos: 1. Prepare in Advance To ensure a smooth workshop experience, collect participant IDs and establish accounts before the session begins. Additionally, have all training materials prepared and accessible ahead of time. This preparation minimizes delays and streamlines the session, allowing for a more focused and productive workshop.

2. Engage and Motivate Keep participants actively involved by offering incentives for their contributions and emphasizing the benefits of participating in Wikimedia projects. This approach helps maintain their enthusiasm and commitment throughout the workshop.

3. Provide Support Ensure that a sufficient number of facilitators are available to address technical issues and answer any questions that arise. Create a supportive environment that encourages participants to seek help when needed, fostering a positive and productive learning experience.

Don’ts: 1. Avoid Overloading Information Do not overwhelm participants with excessive information. Start with basic concepts and gradually introduce more complex ideas to avoid confusion and ensure that participants can follow along effectively.

2. Don’t Rely Solely on Facilities Be flexible with the resources available and focus on achieving the workshop objectives despite any limitations or constraints. Adaptability is key to overcoming resource challenges and ensuring successful outcomes.

3. Prevent Passive Participation To keep participants engaged, avoid allowing them to become passive. Maintain active interaction and provide continuous encouragement throughout the workshop to sustain their motivation and involvement.

  • Collaboration with other educational institutions in contributing knowledge through the use of Wikimedia.

Learning Questions:

  • How was our new approach/ strategy effective in bringing in communities?
  • Were we effective in making people feel welcome, safe, not intimidated?
  • Have we been effective in guiding potential contributors to the different ways they can contribute and further develop the needed skills and support?

Outcomes: WikiKent has been collaborating with other parties to introduce Wikimedia as a platform that helps to empower language diversity by encouraging people to contribute their knowledge especially to uphold their native language. Besides, WikiKent Club consists of members who are enthusiastic and ready to provide guidance and services meticulously either in the form of information or interesting activities that are carried out throughout the training workshops.

Data;

  • Number of new editors that continuously increases during and after the program.
  • Number of words added in Wiktionary by new members.
  • Number of pictures uploaded in Commons by new members.

Through this implementation program, WikiKent will strive to diversify the linguistic content that is available on Wiktionary and to further expand the scope of the Wikimedia community that actively contributes and shares knowledge at the global level.

Learning Questions: How many are already engaging in the community through different channels - editing, events, communications?

Outcomes: Editing activities and events have been engaged and actively participated by WikiKent members in various stages of movements such as schools, state and international levels. However, WikiKent is still actively promoting and introducing the uses of Wikimedia to the public either through events and various programs to increase interest, motivation, and enthusiasm in maintaining the empowerment of native ethnic languages within the educational landscape through the realm of language digitization.

Data;

  • Number of new followers on Instagram of Wikimedia Malaysia and WikiKent Club.
  • Number of words added in Wiktionary by new editors, collaborators and members of WikiKent Club itself.
  • Number of pictures uploaded in Commons by new accounts and WikiKent Club throughout the program.

Learning Questions: How many participants can still continue editing on wiktionary after one month after the event?

Outcomes: Data: Number of participants that still edit wiktionary after one month.

Learning questions: How have their perspectives about Wikimedia changed after they participated in our activities?

Answer: Educators and community members have shown increased awareness of the potential Wikimedia holds, especially in preserving and elevating ethnic languages through digitization in platforms like Wiktionary. The creation of new Wikimedia accounts, contributions to Wiktionary, and the documentation of cultural heritage reflect a shift towards more proactive engagement. This newfound awareness will influence future strategies by further emphasizing training workshops that highlight the practical benefits of Wikimedia for language preservation. Expansion could involve more partnerships with educational institutions.

Outcomes: Educators and communities will be more aware of the opportunities by using Wikimedia as a platform that helps in elevating ethnic languages in the field of education through the language digitization method that is available in Wiktionary. Data; 1. Number of new accounts created in Wikimedia. 2. Number of contributions in Wiktionary. 3. Number of new documentations in Commons about cultural heritage and geographical diversity throughout the meticulously guided training workshops. 4. Collaboration with other educational institutions in contributing knowledge through the use of Wikimedia.

Learning questions: 1. How was our new approach/ strategy effective in bringing in communities? 2. Were we effective in making people feel welcome, safe, not intimidated? 3. Have we been effective in guiding potential contributors to the different ways they can contribute and further develop the needed skills and support?

Answer: The strategy of meticulous guidance and collaboration, especially through WikiKent, has proven effective. New members not only felt welcomed but also gained confidence in their ability to contribute, as shown by the increase in new editors and contributions to Wiktionary and Commons. This success suggests a need to continue providing hands-on, guided experiences. Expanding workshops to include more diverse ethnic groups and offering long-term support could enhance sustainability.

Data: 1. Number of new editors that continuously increases during and after the program. 2. Number of words added in Wiktionary by new members. 3. Number of pictures uploaded in Commons by new members.

Answer: The engagement across various channels, including editing and events, has been positive but could benefit from further outreach. Increased social media followership, contributions in Wiktionary, and new content on Commons indicate growing interest. To maintain momentum, continuous promotion and more interactive community-driven events are necessary. Expanding social media efforts could attract even broader participation.

Data; 1. Number of new followers on Instagram of Wikimedia Malaysia and WikiKent Club. 2. Number of words added in Wiktionary by new editors, collaborators and members of WikiKent Club itself. 3. Number of pictures uploaded in Commons by new accounts and WikiKent Club throughout the program.

Learning questions: How many participants can still continue editing on wiktionary after one month after the event?

Answer: Based on the data of new contributors registered as accounts and new users, records can still be viewed and monitored to see the progress and development of users in contributing in the wiktionary platform. Through this data record, new account contributions can be seen mainly within 1 month and beyond. Furthermore, the record of participants who have been registered throughout the implementation of this wikitour program is recorded in a report under the Kent Wiki Club organization. Here are the reports as a reference for new accounts that have been recorded throughout the wikitour program.

1. Wikitour Perak: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:WikiTour_Perak_2024 2. Wikitour Sarawak: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:WikiTour_Sibu_2024 3. Wikitour Sandakan: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:WikiTour_Sandakan_2024

Outcomes: Number of participants that still edit wiktionary after one month.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Undeniably, there were several unexpected or surprising incidents during the implementation of the WikiTour program. Among them is the internet access issue. Unstable internet access and wifi have prevented online activities from running smoothly, especially when using the Wiktionary platform which requires a strong connection. Therefore, for the next activity, participants need to be instructed to prepare their own Wi-Fi so that they are better prepared if the activity venue does not provide Wi-Fi. In addition, the duration and frequency of filling programs. Allocate a time frame for one program that corresponds to the amount of activities implemented. This is because having too many activities will have an impact on how they are implemented. For example, implementing Wiktionary, Wikipedia, and Wiki commons in a single day will result in an excessively dense implementation of activities. The implementation of activities in a short period of time causes participants who have not yet mastered or are confused to lag behind when the next activity is carried out. To address this issue, activities should be arranged in accordance with the time constraints and abilities of the participants. For example, three activities in a single program can be implemented over several days as necessary. Besides that, we were pleasantly surprised by the positive success of this program. Participants showed great interest in Wiktionary through their excellent engagement and responses. The number of words entered into Wiktionary exceeded the set target. This indicates that a platform like Wikikamus has the potential to grow within the community. Furthermore, the number of contributions to Wikipedia and Wiki Commons exceeded expectations, even if they did not meet the target due to the high volume of activities and insufficient time, but they nevertheless had a beneficial impact on this program. In the future, we plan to organize more follow-up events to capitalize on this momentum and sustain the ongoing interest.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

To share our projects learnings and results from Wikitour 2024 with other community members, we plan to prepare a detailed report summarizing the insights and outcomes of our participation and also lots of documentation for example like instagram for media social other than Wikimedia Common. Additionally, we aim to organize a presentation within the Wiki Kent Club to discuss our collective experience and best practices. This will create an opportunity for open dialogue and collaboration. Furthermore, we intend to propose collaboration with other university club not only in Malaysia, but world wide such as Turkey and Japan university wiki club where we can have editing sessions together about ours and theirs articles. With this, we can foster a supportive environment for ongoing contributions to Wikipedia.
