6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Changes we are trying to bring:

1. Encouraging language diversity. Kent Wiki Club aims to promote and preserve languages, especially ethnic languages that are increasingly less used today, by actively including and editing them through Wiktionary workshops held in this project. This can ensure that these languages are preserved and maintained for future generations.

2. Enhancing accessibility language references. As an educator to be in the future, the trainer from the Kent Wiki Club aims to enlarge the educational resource for these languages through Wiktionary that contribute to language preservation efforts and academic studies. Also, by adding ethnic languages to Wiktionary, we are enhancing accessibility to language resources and knowledge for speakers and learners of these languages. This contributes to bridging the digital language divide and providing valuable linguistic tools to the communities. Besides, this also one of the way to preserve the languages from extinction.

3. Empowering underepresented communities and also global visibility. Through wiktionary, we empower ethnic language communities to actively participate in documenting and preserving the languages. This not only strengthen their linguistic identity but also provides a sense of ownership and pride in their culture heritage. Morevover, by integrating ethnic languages into Wiktionary, we are gibing the global visibility and recognition. This helps in raising awareness about these languages, their unique features and their importace in the broader context of global linguistic diversity such as, Kadazandusun, Semai and Iban languages.

Main challenges:

1. The increasing neglect of Ethnic languages is due to many native language users not passing down this language to the new generation. Wikitour aims to raise awareness among communities about the importance of preserving and revitalizing their mother tongue through the Wiktionary project.

2.The lack of knowledge in information technology among Ethnic language users has led to the gradual decline of these languages. Our arrival through the Wikitour program enables them to become familiar with Wiktionary technology by inputting Ethnic language words into the digital dictionary.

3. The prevalence of Malay and English languages in Malaysia has led to many Ethnic language terms being forgotten. This could result in Ethnic languages losing more word terms, causing the uniqueness and beauty of the language to fade away. By involving the local community in dictionary editing activities, they can remember and digitize words and terms that have long been unused.

Approaches: Our strategy entails:

Our main approach is Facilitating the Development of Community Expertise among School Teachers. In order to foster the preservation and dissemination of native ethnic languages, it is imperative to cultivate a robust network of community experts, particularly among educators. Through a series of structured initiatives, we aim to empower school teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to the Wiktionary platform.

2. Collaboration with Wikimedia Community Users Group Malaysia (CUG): We will collaborate closely with CUG to extend outreach efforts to key educational institutions such as the Jabatan Pendidikan Sarawak Negeri Sarawak , SMK Sri Tapah in Perak, and the Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah in Sandakan. By engaging educators at these institutions, we aim to broaden the pool of contributors and diversify the linguistic content available on Wiktionary.

3. Developing community expert resources.: We will host dedicated sessions to familiarize teachers with Wiktionary, elucidating its background and significance in the realm of language digitization. By elucidating the broader context and relevance of Wiktionary, educators will appreciate its pivotal role in elevating native ethnic languages within the educational landscape.

4. Capacity Building Workshops: Through meticulously guided training workshops, we will equip educators with the requisite expertise to navigate and utilize the Wikikamus platform proficiently. These workshops will not only bolster their technical proficiency but also instill the confidence necessary to actively contribute to the platform.

5. Direct Engagement: Direct demonstrations of Wikikamus functionalities will be provided to educators, facilitating a hands-on understanding of its features and capabilities. These demonstrations will serve to demystify the platform and empower educators to harness its full potential in enriching their linguistic repertoire.

6. Documentation of Cultural Heritage: WikiTour 2024 presents an opportunity to document the rich cultural heritage and geographical diversity of Malaysia. Through Wikimedia Commons, we will upload a comprehensive array of images capturing the essence of various districts and states, thereby enriching the cultural tapestry accessible through the platform.

By implementing these strategic initiatives, we endeavor not only to augment the Wikimedia network but also to catalyze the digitization of local ethnic languages, thereby preserving and promoting Malaysia's linguistic heritage. Through targeted engagement with educators, we aspire to foster a culture of linguistic empowerment, wherein native ethnic languages are celebrated and perpetuated within the educational ecosystem.

Introducing wiktionary platform to teachers: i.Approach: Experiential Learning ii.Strategy: Hands-on Exploration iii.Rationale:By directly immersing teachers into the Wiktionary platform, they experience its functionality and potential firsthand. This hands-on approach allows educators to familiarize themselves with the platform's features, navigation, and collaborative nature. Through exploration, teachers gain confidence in utilizing Wiktionary as a valuable resource in their teaching practices.

Teach teacher how to edit Wiktionary: i.Approach: Constructivist Learning ii.Strategy: Active Participation iii.Rationale: Empowering teachers with the skills to edit Wiktionary entries aligns with a constructivist approach to learning. By actively participating in the editing process, educators construct their understanding of language concepts and the principles of collaborative knowledge creation. This approach not only enhances their own language proficiency but also equips them to guide students in contributing to Wiktionary.
