Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The proposed activies to take snap atleast 1000 pictures to expose the african culture predominantly around Kachia axis of Kaduna state by the Tyap Wikimedia User Group was beautifully completed. A two-day training event was set to train new editors on Wiki commons and Wiki Loves Africa event and also to introduce them to the target of the group and the event as a whole.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Six professional photographers and 4 amateur were used to achieve the set goals of the project. All are existing Wikimedia editors. More than 2,500 pictures were snapped, over 1,100 were selected to meet the standard of the of the project and truly reflect the Weather and Climate of Kaduna as a unit of Africa. Pictures are still been uploaded, this is due to delays by the organizers in the National level to harmonize our contributions. The contest is still on, but 100 pictures have been used in our Tyap Wiki pages.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Not applicable to your fund
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

I brought up a team of 10 persons, who are members of the Tyap Wikimedia User Group. Sixto among them are experienced Photographers, Four were amateurs. We took the first two days to train the amateur photographers basic photography skills and handling the camera. Five among the participants are experienced Wiki Commons editors, So I we trained the other five in editing on Commons and using its pictures in other Wiki platforms. I mentored the team in creating contents and getting desired results.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Five persons have been added in the number of people that can create and edit on Wiki commons for the group, that is a 50% increase tot he already existing Wiki commons in Tyap Wikimedia User Group.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

-We were freely guided by some communities to safe areas and told areas we should avoid.

  • All members of the team resorted to cooking by ourselves as we could not get access to buying food and snacks in interior areas, this increased the bond in the team.
  • Unfortunately, the car we hired broke down along SCC Junction to Gurara Dam (146.1km) of Kachia LGA Kaduna state, during our visit to Gurara dam, we spent six hours into the night with no help because there are no access to repairers. The tam stood strong nd did not panic until help was found.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

-We intend to reach more interior places, but in future aside just informing the Local government authorities about our intended visit, we will request for personnel to lead us into the communities.

  • We will also prepare to always travel ready to cook, due to the rural nature of several environments in our region, as we may not be able to buy food and snacks because there are no good restaurants, or rather bad restaurants.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
