Part 1: Project and impact
[edit]1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
This year edition of WLE 2024 in Serbia was very successful. With over 3,500 uploaded photos, and over 100 participants (contestants, editors, organizers etc), this edition was by far the most successful of all previous.
Cooperation with both institutes (state and provincial) were on the top level, since both parties took active participation in preparation, organization and hosting of award ceremony. Several local tourist organizations and media supported and spread the word about the competition. Local organizing team put a lot of efforts in promotion of the competition through the official web site, media, social networks and partners. Edit-a-thon and photo-tours were also very successful.
This edition was inaugural for video contest, and it was implemented as a "pilot", but the outcome was unexpected with more than 15 high-quality videos of various protected areas. Official website hits the record visits with over 70,000 visitors since the WLE comeback in Serbia. Official Instagram page almost doubled up the number of followers (650+).

Part 2: Learning
[edit]4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: Our Learning question would be:
- Can this project still be organized on an individual basis, as was the case last year, and as is the case in several other WLE organizations around the world? How enthusiastic are the organizers?
- During summer 2023, Serbia was hit by one of the strongest storms ever recorded, which grounded over a million trees around the country. This natural disaster affected significant number of natural protected areas. Conditions of these areas are changed, so this should be applied on WP articles also. Could this project improve accuracy and be up-to-date with articles on WP?
- Does this project attract new participants?
- What are the effects of WLE in Serbia on the development of the informal Wiki community in Serbia?
- Can this project still be organized on an individual basis, as was the case last year, and as is the case in several other WLE organizations around the world? How enthusiastic are the organizers? By all the outcomes, absolutely YES. Enthusiasm was very high for implementing new ideas, improving the old one, and preparing the next one. YT Channel and video category are good examples.
Having at least 100+ very remote protected locations, some of them are unreachable for public, but all the available data about natural disaster were implemented in the WP articles.
- Does this project attract new participants? Yes, definitely, with more than 70% of new participants, and 10+ editors.
- What are the effects of WLE in Serbia on the development of the informal Wiki community in Serbia? There is a growing interest in participation and volunteering for WLE and similar projects, which is highly encouraging,
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
One of the very surprising outcomes was very successful video category pilot project. After global Team decided to introduce it worldwide, as an option, out team "took a risk" and took part in it. Even so, our expectations were not very high, but more like as a "test", final product was very satisfying, with more than 15 high quality videos of different protected areas all around the country.
Our learning outcome is that video category definitely has high potential, and that one of our main focuses in the next edition (2025) will be more promotion, explanation and support for this category. Local contestants approve new ideas, which video definitely is.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
All the project learning and results are already shared with community members via internal mailing list, WP pages, and both official website, Instagram page and YouTube channel. During the Award Ceremony all the outcomes and learning were publicly announced.
