6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Wiki Loves Earth is an international annual photo-competition. It was organized in Serbia for four consecutive years (2014-2017), but since then competition has been on hiatus, until 2023. Some very noticeable results have been made on the local level, especially in 2016, when one photo from Serbia won the international title for the best WLE photo.

Edition 2023, was returning for Serbia and with over 2,700 uploaded photos and 80+ participants, we put Serbia on the global WLE map again, and made the biggest success in the history of Serbian WLE edition so far. One photo from WLE Serbia secured 3rd place on #WikiForHumanRights, which is a significant success after the long break. Revival of WLE has attracted a lot of interested people from the Wiki community but also outside of it, especially Nature protection Institute’s representatives.

Main challenges in 2024 are: severe 2023 storm in Serbia, cut down millions of trees, and a certain number of protected areas are affected or destroyed, so this leads to another deep revision of the List of protected natural areas, and check of articles up-to-date status in Wikipedia; increment of project visibility (locally and globally); continuity in high results and goals; bigger Nature protection Institute involvement; attracting new participants from different groups.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
  • Review and revise the entire database of existing protected natural heritage and compare them with new lists.
  • Updating lists and adding new protected natural areas
  • Make statistics on the coverage of protected natural heritage in Serbian Wikipedia. This can be useful for tracking the metrics of how many new protected natural assets will be covered by new articles. Also, this information may be useful for one of the next CEE Spring projects, where articles would be translated into other languages.
  • Updating the website and entering all relevant information
  • Updating guides and instructions with tips on how to take quality photos and how to upload them.
  • Looking for a local GLAM/or other partner.
  • Editing and creating templates
  • Attracting the community
  • Organizing between 2 and 3 photo tours. (making lists and maps, finding sites, organizing tours, etc)
  • Organization of competition in May-July and monitoring its process
  • Providing technical support during photo-uploads.
  • View and select all submitted photos.
  • Search and selection of jury members
  • Prepare tools for the jury
  • Selection of photos for the jury
  • Selection of top 10 photos on local level.
  • Organizing two exhibitions. The first exhibition will be related to the Award ceremony. The second exhibition will be the promotion of the project and the continuation of good practice for the future projects and cooperation.
  • Send a photo to an international selection.
  • Creating promotional material.
  • Running a PR campaign and cooperating with the media.
  • Regularly sending press clippings and running pages on social networks.
  • Organization of an edit-a-thon (creation of pages and events, monitoring, providing support, etc.)
  • Other ad hoc jobs

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
  • Ivan M, main organizer, (Ivan25)
  • Nikola T, tech support (Nter25)

  • other potential volunteers

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

It is enough if they like the idea of WLE and the concept of Wikimedia, and that they want to participate in the competition. They can be professionals or amateurs/enthusiasts from different spheres. The target group for the edit-a-thon are existing and new users of Wikipedia in the Serbian language who are willing to write about natural heritage.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

(required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Learning and metrics[edit]

17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Our Learning question would be:

  1. Can this project still be organized on an individual basis, as was the case last year, and as is the case in several other WLE organizations around the world? How enthusiastic are the organizers?
  2. During summer 2023, Serbia was hit by one of the strongest storms ever recorded, which grounded over a million trees around the country. This natural disaster affected significant number of natural protected areas. Conditions of these areas are changed, so this should be applied on WP articles also. Could this project improve accuracy and be up-to-date with articles on WP?
  3. Does this project attract new participants?
  4. What are the effects of WLE in Serbia on the development of the informal Wiki community in Serbia?
18. What are your Wikimedia project targets in numbers (metrics)? (required)
