General information

  • Title of Proposal: Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 in Tunisia

Part 1 Understanding your work

[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

We relocated the event in another city than the capital and worked with local associations in order to connect with a new community of photographers and recruite newcomers. In addition to that, we promoted the competition on social media platforms and via the mailing lists.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Local associations were very reactive, they made the contact with local photographers easier and helped us by providing the space where the photoshoots tookplace. Promoting the event through social media and mailing lists were effective since photographers who worked with the tunisian usergroup are always on the lookout for the new contests. Those efforts helped us reach our goals in term of the number of images uploaded on commons and percentage of newcomers who joined the competition.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Neither agree nor disagree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Since folklore is everywhere in Tunisia, participants from all over the country had no difficulties collecting and sharing their local folklore and cultural heritage.( specially south and east coast of Tunisia)

Part 2: Your main learning

[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

What are the best ways to reach out a new audience ? : In this project we collaborated with local associations who allowed us to get in touch with new photographers potentielly interested in creating and distributing free open knowledge. How to convince local communities to join the project, and engage them to collaborate in further events. What factors act as barriers ? : I found that there was no resistance from regional partners to collaborate and help. For example we communicated through social media and emailing with local Associations like AFDD who offered us the space where an exhebition of local food took place. Do new editors have the skills needed to contribute to wikicomons ? What form of training and support was most/less useful in gaining these skills : New editors were not familiar with wikicommons so a training was necessary (using materials from wikicommons) the training took place in a coworking space in Mahdia. A one to one kind of support was necessary.

What types of support and activities are most interesting to new participants who want to learn more about the Wikimedia community? Group activities and local events like photowalks attract participants but reaching out to the national community is a great way for the newcomers to understand and get familiar with the wikimedia community.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

What was surprising during the contest is the will of the participants from all over the country to submit rare and exceptional high quality photos. The participants were enthusiastic to take the best photos. Since the contest took place before the grant was paid, we modified the budget like cutting the tansportation fees for the photowalk.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

In the future, Engaging with local organizations and professional photographers via strategic partnerships from all over the country and not only focusing on a specific region is a key step to recruit new potentiel contributers and elevate standards of the competition , so actions on a national scale are required. In Further activities grant proposal must be done in advance to be sure that the program will be fully executed.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

12. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? This could include things like a lack of time or resources, or the expertise in your team to collect this data. It could also include difficulties with particular data collection tools.

No

12a. State what difficulties you had.

We used wikiloves.toolforge.org but I can't explain why there is a difference between the number of the images under the category "Images from Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 in Tunisia" and the number listed in wikiloves.toolforge.org

12b. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges?

N/A

13. Use this space to upload any documents and provide links to any tools you have used that would be useful to understand your data collection (e.g., surveys you have carried out, communications material, training material, program and event dashboard link, project page on Meta).

we suppressed the photowalk expenses related to travel and transportation and the closing ceremony.

18. Do you have any unspent funds from the Fund?
