In our efforts with the Wiki Loves Monuments campaign in South Sudan, we embarked on a mission to bring attention to our country's hidden cultural treasures. Through interactive photography workshops and captivating heritage talks, we aimed to capture the essence of these historical sites. Our team organized guided tours and photowalks, immersing ourselves in the stories behind each monument, and with every click of the camera, we endeavored to preserve their tales for generations to come. By teaming up with local heritage groups, we unearthed forgotten narratives, sharing them online through challenges and discussions. This collective effort not only documented these monuments but also ignited a shared passion among our communities, fostering a newfound appreciation for our rich cultural heritage, all seen in the array of images now proudly housed on platforms like Wikimedia Commons.

Part 2: Learning[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: Participating in a campaign like Wiki Loves Monuments can offer several key lessons. Here are some of them:

1. Appreciation for Cultural Heritage: Engaging in the campaign allows participants to develop a deeper appreciation for their country's cultural heritage. They learn about the historical and cultural significance of monuments and gain a greater understanding of the importance of their preservation.
2. Community Collaboration: The campaign emphasizes the power of community collaboration. Participants learn to work together, share knowledge and skills, and collectively contribute to the documentation and promotion of cultural heritage. They understand the value of engaging local communities and stakeholders in heritage initiatives.
3. Photography Skills and Techniques: Through the campaign, participants can enhance their photography skills and learn new techniques. They develop an eye for capturing the essence of cultural heritage sites, improve their composition and editing skills, and gain insights into architectural and landscape photography.
4. Documentation and Research: Participants learn the art of documentation and research. They conduct background research on monuments, delve into their historical context, and collect information about their significance. This fosters a sense of exploration and curiosity about cultural heritage.
5. Global Connections and Cultural Exchange: Wiki Loves Monuments is a global campaign, and participants have the opportunity to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. They learn about heritage from different parts of the world, engage in cross-cultural conversations, and contribute to a global repository of cultural knowledge.
6. Awareness of Heritage Conservation: The campaign raises awareness about the importance of heritage conservation. Participants learn about the threats facing cultural heritage sites, such as neglect, vandalism, or urban development. They become advocates for heritage preservation and spread awareness within their communities.
7. Creative Expression and Storytelling: Photography is a form of creative expression, and participants learn to tell stories through their images. They discover ways to capture the emotions, beauty, and historical narratives associated with cultural heritage sites, allowing them to communicate and connect with others on a visual level.
8. Digital Literacy and Open Knowledge: Wiki Loves Monuments encourages participants to contribute their photographs to Wikimedia Commons and other open knowledge platforms. Through this process, participants learn about digital literacy, open licensing, and the principles of sharing knowledge for the greater good.

These lessons contribute to personal growth, foster a sense of cultural responsibility, and inspire participants to become lifelong advocates for cultural heritage conservation and promotion.

Implementing our project brought invaluable insights that addressed our initial learning questions. Through the Wiki Loves Monuments campaign, we witnessed firsthand the transformational impact of community involvement in cultural preservation. Learning about our heritage through heritage talks and engaging in photowalks not only enriched our understanding but also sparked a sense of ownership and pride in our cultural legacy. The collaborative effort with local heritage organizations unveiled the depth of untold stories and the significance of sharing them online. These experiences taught us the power of digital storytelling in preserving our history and fostering cultural appreciation. In the future, we aim to leverage these learnings by continuing to engage communities, amplifying their voices in heritage preservation, and using digital platforms to ensure our cultural narratives endure and inspire future generations.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

During our Wiki Loves Monuments campaign, we encountered unexpected but enriching moments. One surprising aspect was the overwhelming enthusiasm and participation from local communities. Their eagerness to share stories and engage in preserving their heritage surpassed our expectations, fostering a deeper sense of connection to the monuments. However, logistical challenges arose, particularly during photowalks, where unexpected weather changes disrupted our plans. Despite this, it taught us to adapt quickly and find alternative ways to continue our documentation efforts. Moreover, the diverse perspectives shared by participants added depth to our understanding of the sites, enriching the narrative we aimed to capture. These unexpected situations reinforced the importance of flexibility, community engagement, and adaptability in heritage preservation initiatives, emphasizing the need for contingency plans and inclusive approaches to accommodate unforeseen circumstances.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

To disseminate our project's learnings and results within the community, we've devised a multi-pronged approach. We plan to conduct a series of knowledge-sharing sessions, utilizing various platforms such as community meet-ups, online forums, and webinars. These sessions will showcase our project journey, highlighting the strategies that proved most effective, the challenges encountered, and the outcomes achieved. Additionally, we'll create comprehensive documentation, including reports, case studies, and visual presentations, to be shared on Wikimedia platforms and other relevant channels accessible to community members. Our aim is to not only inform but also inspire others by illustrating the impact of community-driven initiatives in preserving cultural heritage. Additionally, we've begun this process by sharing preliminary insights through social media posts and engaging discussions in relevant online forums within the Wikimedia community.
