Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

First of all, well before the validation of the proposal, we have already contacted the heads of the colleges months ago and announced our arrival and exchanged on the method to adopt during the days of activities. For that a work was made by the responsible of establishment by selecting the learners in class of examination, first cycle and second with an accent on the presence of the young girls. With my team, we came to Djougou the day before in order to prepare the contingencies and to anticipate possible problems that we may have. This allowed us to meet with the school officials and to make sure that the catering for the students would be on time. Also to see the approach that the learners have of the digital in this area and to see how to approach the modules at the height of their understanding. Also it allowed to see the person in charge of the computer room his position towards the digital and how he can help the learners to better understand a subject even after the workshops (his understanding of using a wiki with a phone and also a computer). The details were settled the day before and we organized together the arrival of the learners (punctuality, break and lunch times, and projects that need to be tackled between the first and third day in order to deploy all our planned program). This approach was done in the other cities (Malanville and Kandi).

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Yes, it is above all organizational, anticipating eventualities. For this first one, we had a major concern: the availability of funds before the beginning of the campaign. This played on the planning designed. However, after each day of training in the 3 cities, it is necessary to make the point between my team and the people in charge of the learners. This allows us to see what worked and what didn't, what needs to be corrected and the best approach for a new training day. Identify learners who have difficulty understanding a topic and see how to approach it so that they understand better and well. A bit like the use of Kiwix by learners, which has generated interest in different cities, especially since the update allows it to be used without internet, especially in areas where the connection is not better. The great success of the Wiki tours is the team because it allows support at all levels. One person at the front explains the program and the others with the learners to explain this on the computer what to do when the one at the front explains what to do. The dialogue between the different parties, listening to the beneficiaries. Established a friendly atmosphere where everyone can say what they think without filter so that we can touch their thoughts and see how a solution was found.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

First of all, I would like to point out that this is the first time that the foundation's activities are being carried out in these cities. And what better way for learners in exam class for whom the quest is to understand the curriculum in areas where there are few libraries sometimes non-existent to deepen their knowledge.

This tour is one of the activities for which it makes sense to volunteer in a community since I joined the movement.

Systematically in the 3 cities the remark has been striking. The participants on the internet for a research see the information of wikipedia but do not know how it works (a collaborative work between volunteers to make the knowledge universal and available to everyone). Explained to them even learners or teachers that they can benefit from what volunteers do without paying anything and also bring a plus to this growing community with human values.

This way of explaining to them how it works by creating a wiki account and bringing a plus to push the desire in them all interested in the free.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

I had the chance to carry out several activities in the south of Benin. But this activity allowed me to discover through men, women, and children the importance of free sharing. The 1500 words will obviously not be enough of what I have acquired as a human. the crowdedness of people and especially the thirst to know. From the realities of landlocked areas in search of having the opportunity to acquire what the population of the well off areas to have. This cultural richness and the resilience of the people. Their desire to be heard and to have the feeling of being listened to and understood. I had the chance that the foundation gave me to discover people who do not necessarily come from my usual environment and who have totally respectable values. I left this campaign sad because I did not want it to end. I found a vocation (education) that remains for me as a revelation of the future where being on the ground has nothing to compare because it allows you to meet wonderful people. I promised them to come back with or without funding and that they could contact me for anything if they had any problems contributing to the free encyclopedia and much more.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

On the negative side, since we had already established a detailed schedule with the schools months ago, we received the funds for the campaign almost a month after the campaign, so in order to honor our commitments, we were forced to start late while doing a team of two groups for two cities, which allowed us to reach the goals set from the beginning. Also in the city of Kandi we were confronted with an increased power outage which really disrupted the work and the computers.

On the positive side, my team and I were struck by one thing. On the first day, in every city, there were delays of a few minutes, even hours. But on the second day and the third day in each city, we noticed that learners and teachers were arriving a few minutes before the start time and dragging out the activity in hopes of learning more and more.

At the end of the 3 days in each city, we felt this sadness from the people to see us go that really touched me. I had to create a telegram group to add them so as not to lose anything of their people, their kindness and especially their desire to know.

However, in itself, it is quite formative because it allows us to prepare ourselves for eventualities that may arise in a well established program. Any project is a learning experience. It allows you to take on challenges.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Like what I said above. The North Benin wiki tours allowed me to meet myself as a person and gave me a vocation (education, diversity and culture of people).

For my part I am going to train myself in everything I didn't know about foundation projects in order to expand and diversify the areas for the people I will train in the future just to give them the chance to contribute on projects that really interest them and show them how it works.

The advantage of this project is that it's an individual request that gives me the opportunity to express my skills without a filter. Not to be there on behalf of a group of users but of a community of men and women.

I intend to redo the wiki tours Benin 2 by continuing the experience with other cities in the north of the country where the projects of the foundation have never gone in order to give them the chance to know that there are people who militate for a universal knowledge.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics[edit]

10a. Open Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.

Open Metrics Summary
Open Metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of articles written Number of articles written or improved by the group of learners in Djougou 10 27 The number of articles written or improved by the group of learners in Malanville is complicated to know, especially since the same articles are improved in the three cities visited and the total number of articles written or improved in the three cities is 27 articles created and 890 articles improved, this in the hope of showing them that it is a collaborative work that what is done in one city can be modified in another city or country. outreachdashboard

10b. Core Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined targets for some core metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with each core metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Note: a table will appear for each Wikimedia project content contribution you defined in your proposal.

Core Metrics Summary
Core metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of participants In each city 20 learners including computer room managers 20 71 In each city we have exceeded 20 learners including the computer room managers over the days because usually there are other teachers who are added in order to know a little bit about the subject. The word of mouth communication and especially the diversity of exchanges, the importance of free knowledge Wiki can bring in the accompaniment of future teaching in schools, universities and especially in everyday life.
Number of editors May it not be an editorial-thon, we will help to create two accounts per institution that will serve as a springboard for our activities. 6 14 In the 3 cities we exceeded the number of 6 publishers because people wanted to start at the same time to see if it is true. The flexibility of the projects and especially the desire to know.
Number of organizers 4 organizers will cover all the activity in the 3 cities 4 6 From 4 we have gone to 6 trainers in order to master the content of the training and to diversify the tasks so that the learners and the people in charge of the room do not have the impression that it is the same person who masters all the subjects and projects. Also, this allows each time to assist each other during the 3 days in each city. An organization based on a geographical area not necessarily known in order to better direct the exchanges.
Number of new content contributions per Wikimedia project
Wikimedia Project Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Wikipedia During the period, we have created or improved at least 30 articles 30 27 For the account of the campaign after summation we find 2 articles created. Passion et détermination car nous savons l'importance de la documentation inexistante dans ses zones enclavées. Même si nous ne sommes pas satisfaits du résultat
Wikimedia Commons During the period of the activities we intend to take photos in these localities to illustrate wikipedia articles that we will have to create during the activities. 30 36 36 images uploaded during the project. We are not satisfied with this result because we could have done better. It turned out that in one city (Kandi) we were confronted with a continuous power outage for several days, thus making the work very complicated because some learners had really had trouble loading the laptops for the Photos walk. The photos were taken totally after the campaign, so I asked that we wait for a next round of uploads.
Wikidata During the activity period the articles created will be Wikidater in order to serve as an exercise. 20 706 706 Wikidata elements were created instead of the promised 20; and many more improved. All of them could be done more if we had more time. Collegial work, determination to put cities and districts of Benin on the Wikidata map and especially communication.

Like any project, we had some unforeseen events. But it remains one of my best experiences in the movement. Thanks to this project, I was able to retain 6 people with whom I am currently working on a project of our own and which fits into the objectives of the Foundation, namely to reduce the gap in the districts of Benin. A work made possible thanks to this project funded by the Wikimedia Foundation. You can see it here:https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Wikimedia_Foundation/Afrique_Atelier_du_Savoir This allows us to continue the work we have started and to involve them in other projects of the movement. This adventure ends in sadness because we lack time to enjoy this extraordinary, resilient and especially open-minded population. Thanks to this project, I discovered abilities that I didn't think I had. I hope that this will not be the last tour of northern Benin, but a continuation and an adventure. Thank you very much for this opportunity
