Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

I confirmed a venue for the project and then prepared a flier. The flier announced the project and invited senior citizens to participate stating the venue and time of the project. It was distributed in different location including to members of Christian Women Organisation of our Catholic church and to residents of Redeem Estate, Lugbe. Soft copies of the fliers were also circulated in the social media. The project was also advertised in Aso Radio. The project started on 5th August 2022 with a presentation on WMF generally. The project continued subsequently for another 5 sessions where wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia were discussed. It was interactive sessions. At every session, a rehash of the previous session will be done before a new presentation will be made. Two sessions were allotted to each of the 3 projects of WMF. In between the training sessions, participants were encouraged to edit as part of the competition. There were food and drinks in every session and all participants and facilitators were given branded T shirt, jotters and pens. On the 5th session, a survey was released for each participant to assess the project. At the end of the training, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd participants for each of the 3 wiki projects were given a price. Following the agreement of all participants we formed the Wiki For Senior Citizens Network as a group to continue encouraging many more senior citizens in Nigeria to volunteer for WMF.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Announcing the project on radio and inviting participants in the announcement was very helpful. Also sharing the fliers to people in identified strategic places helped a lot. However, opening a whatsapp group for all participants from the beginning of the project was what helped to sustain the project by continuously interacting with participants. The group enabled participants to ask questions when they run into problem in between the sessions. It also enabled the resource persons to teach people on-line when they have challenges. This is what sustained the editing even up till now. It was the unity we sustained in the whatsapp group that bound people together and led to every one agreeing that we will form the Wiki For Senior Citizens Network which we have formed.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Not applicable to your fund
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

This is the first and only time that a Wikimedia project was ever done in Nigeria that was dedicated to involve senior citizens in WMF. The project was received with a lot of enthusiasm. Many people who heard the advert on the radio or saw it on facebook etc reached out to participate. Some of the people are not based n Abuja and environs. We had to arrange for them to be thought online even on Sundays. We are getting more and more people joining the whatsapp group from different parts of the country. Participants have continued to contribute since then. Most importantly, participants decided to form the Wiki For Senior Citizens Network which has been formed. I have sent the meta page of the network in this report. In the meta page, you will see our facebook, twitter and whatsapp group link which were all formed during the programme

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

I was actually interested to knowing how senior citizens can best participate in WMF. From our experience in the programme and from the feedback in the questionnaire, it has been shown that senior citizens can be very interested in volunteering. They also have more time. However, it was also shown that many of us are not conversant with information technology. Many of us are not yet fast in working on computer. Many also do not have computer. Also, young person who are more used to technology are able to learn wikipedia faster than senior citizens. This was shown from some young persons that joined the project. Also, some seniors who retired with low income do not even have money for data to continue editing. However, if senior citizens are trained and enabled, they will contribute more.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

I did not expect the high number of senior citizens who showed interest even though some of them did not edit because they joined late and needed more time to learn. I also realized that we need more time to teach senior citizens as some could be slow to learn. Also, learning Wikipedia was especially more difficult. People learnt Wikidata and Wikimedia commons faster than Wikipedia. In fact few people were able to edit Wikipedia at the end. We need more time to learn Wikipedia.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We have found that that if we work together, we will better understand each other and encourage each other as senior citizens. We have therefore formed the Wiki For Senior Citizens Network. To enable more learning, we are allowing a few younger persons to join us so that they can also help in networking etc. this way we can set our limits, our target, our working modalities etc. for example, we all agree that more time should be devoted to learning how to edit Wikipedia as it is more difficult.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.
