Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

the proposed activities and strategies were implemented through a 5-hour workshop during Ramadan. To ensure a broad reach and maximum participation, the workshop call was shared on different social media platforms, including the Iraqi Wikimedia page and Wiki Arabic community projects group.

As a result, over 130 people applied to attend the workshop, and 23 individuals were selected from different ages, genders, and districts to participate. This diverse group helped to create a dynamic and inclusive environment for all involved.

The workshop began with a brief introduction to the Wikimedia Foundation and its various projects. This introduction provided the necessary context for the discussions that followed and helped to create a shared understanding of the organization's mission and objectives.

The participants then shared an iftar meal together and engaged in discussions about different Wikiprojects. These conversations helped to foster a sense of community and collaboration among the participants, which was an essential part of the workshop's objectives.

The workshop then moved on to a more in-depth discussion of Wikidata, one of the key projects of the Wikimedia Foundation. The participants were able to explore the many features and capabilities of Wikidata and learned how to use it effectively.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

the selection of participants from different age groups (15 to 58 years old), with a balanced gender ratio, and from various living locations, was particularly effective in creating a unique and diverse environment.

This diverse selection of participants ensured that the workshop's discussions and activities were informed by a broad range of perspectives, experiences, and ideas. Participants were able to share their knowledge and insights about the Wikimedia Foundation and its projects.

The diversity of participants also contributed to a more inclusive and engaging environment for all involved. Everyone felt that their voices and contributions were valued, and this helped to create a sense of community and collaboration that was essential to the workshop's success.

Overall, the strategy of selecting participants from different age groups, genders, and living locations was highly effective in achieving the workshop's goals. The diverse perspectives and experiences of the participants helped to ensure that the discussions and activities were informative, engaging, and inclusive, which made for a rich and fulfilling experience for all involved.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

The targeted participants' views of Wikimedia changed significantly after participating in our event. They were introduced to other projects beyond Wikipedia and gained a deeper understanding of Wikidata. This helped them appreciate the diverse range of opportunities available on Wikimedia platforms.

We made significant efforts to make participants feel welcome, safe, and not intimidated during the event. This was achieved by creating a diverse and inclusive environment that encouraged open discussions and facilitated learning. Ongoing challenges include maintaining a balance between welcoming new participants and catering to the needs of experienced editors.

The new editors who attended the workshop had varying levels of skills. While some were familiar with the Wikimedia platform, others needed more guidance to understand the basics.

After the event, a significant number of participants continued to adjust and improve their skills.

Motivation to continue editing after the event varied among the editors. Some were motivated by a desire to share knowledge and contribute to the community, while others were interested in improving their editing skills. The existing obstacles included a lack of time and resources to devote to editing and a lack of awareness about opportunities to contribute to Wikimedia projects. The participants received support during the workshop, but ongoing support is necessary to sustain their motivation and contributions.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Firstly, the response to the workshop call was overwhelming, with a much larger number of people applying to attend than originally anticipated. This was a positive surprise as it demonstrated the community's high level of interest in Wiki projects and their eagerness to participate in relevant activities. As a result, the number of participants was increased from 18 to 23 people to accommodate as many participants as possible.

This experience taught us that there is a strong demand for such workshops and activities in the community, and we need to organize more of them to meet the community's needs. It also highlights the importance of communicating effectively and widely about the events to maximize participation.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Regarding unexpected or surprising events during the implementation of the workshop, there were a couple of positive situations worth mentioning.

In summary, while there were no negative surprises during the implementation of the workshop, the high level of interest and participation in Wiki projects was a positive surprise, which highlighted the need for more workshops and activities to meet the community's needs. It was an excellent learning experience, and we hope to build on the momentum generated by the workshop to organize more such events in the future.

12. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? This could include things like a lack of time or resources, or the expertise in your team to collect this data. It could also include difficulties with particular data collection tools.

Yes

12a. State what difficulties you had.

The busy task of organizing and coordinating the workshop, coupled with the high volume of questions and assisting the trainees, made it difficult to analyze everything due to the limited time available.

12b. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges?

As part of my plan, I intend to engage one or more facilitators, as needed, to assist with monitoring during the workshops

13. Use this space to upload any documents and provide links to any tools you have used that would be useful to understand your data collection (e.g., surveys you have carried out, communications material, training material, program and event dashboard link, project page on Meta).

As required in the fund agreement, please report any deviations from your fund proposal here. Note that, among other things, any changes must be consistent with our WMF mission, must be for charitable purposes as defined in the grant agreement, and must otherwise comply with the grant agreement.

17c. If you have not already done so in your budget report, please provide information on changes in the budget in relation to your original proposal.

Regarding changes in the budget in relation to the original proposal, you can find linked documents, which consist of two pages; one for the application and the other for the report. Firstly, it is important to note that there was a change in the exchange rate during the funding transfer, which caused the actual amount received in IQD to be lower than anticipated. As a result, I had to reduce the budget by removing unnecessary expenses. Additionally, due to the workshop taking place during Ramadan, lunch was changed to iftar, which resulted in increased costs. To balance out this change, adjustments were made to the budget in terms of lunch and transportation.

18. Do you have any unspent funds from the Fund?

No

18a. Please list the amount and currency you did not use and explain why.
