Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
During the implementation of the Wikimedia Awareness in Kwami project, a series of focused activities were executed to achieve the proposal’s objectives. Below are the key activities undertaken and the outcomes:
Implemented Activities:
1. Workshops and training sessions: Conducted multiple in-person workshops to train participants on Wikipedia editing and content creation. These sessions aimed to build foundational skills in contributing effectively to Wikimedia projects. Community engagement forums: Organized forums to engage with local community leaders, educators, and students, raising awareness about the benefits of participating in Wikimedia projects and how it fosters the region’s representation online.
2. Outreach programs at educational institutions: Visited the local university and health and nursing college, as well as various schools, to provide targeted training and encourage the involvement of young individuals and students in open knowledge contributions. Collaborations with local writers' clubs: Partnered with existing writers' clubs in Kwami to leverage their experience in storytelling and content creation for enriching Wikimedia articles.
3. Distribution of learning materials: Provided printed handouts and digital guides covering essential Wikipedia editing tips and community guidelines to participants for post-training practice.
Results Achieved:
1. Increased number of active contributors: The workshops successfully onboarded over 100 new editors, with around 60% continuing to contribute after the initial training phase.
2. Enhanced awareness of Wikimedia projects: Community engagement efforts resulted in heightened interest in Wikimedia platforms, particularly in educational institutions where students showed significant enthusiasm.
3. Creation and improvement of articles: Participants contributed to the creation of over 50 new articles relevant to the region and edited numerous existing entries to add more accurate and local content.
4. Stronger community bonds: The partnership with local writers' clubs cultivated a supportive network for continued learning and collaboration among new editors.
Most Effective Approaches:
1. Hands-on workshops: Practical training sessions were the most impactful, allowing participants to learn by doing, which boosted their confidence and retention of skills. 2. Collaborations with community groups: Engaging with existing local clubs and institutions maximized participation and added a layer of community trust and familiarity. 3. Tailored educational content: The provision of customized guides that addressed specific challenges faced by new editors in the region proved to be beneficial for post-training practice.
Overall, these strategic activities and approaches not only met but in some areas exceeded the project goals by fostering a growing community committed to contributing to Wikimedia projects.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: Did the project recruit new editors?
Did the project create awareness?
Did the project contribute to Wikipedia and its sisters projects?
Did the project a Wikimedia Community?
Throughout the implementation of the Wikimedia Awareness in Kwami project, we explored the outlined learning questions to assess the project's impact and guide future initiatives. Below are the insights gained:
Did the project recruit new editors? Yes, the project successfully recruited over 100 new editors. The workshops provided hands-on training, which significantly contributed to participants' understanding and comfort with Wikipedia editing. Approximately 60% of the new editors have continued contributing to Wikimedia projects post-training, demonstrating sustained engagement.
Key learning: Personal engagement through interactive workshops proved crucial for onboarding new contributors. The experience highlighted the importance of practical, guided sessions over solely theoretical presentations.
Did the project create awareness? The project effectively raised awareness about Wikimedia and its potential for local content contribution. This was achieved through community forums, outreach at educational institutions, and collaboration with writers’ clubs. The project sparked interest among students and community members, broadening the understanding of Wikimedia as a tool for representation and knowledge sharing.
Key learning: Strategic partnerships with educational institutions and community groups can amplify awareness campaigns. These partnerships added credibility and drew interest from diverse groups, including students and professionals.
Did the project contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects? Yes, the project contributed significantly to Wikipedia and sister projects by creating more than 50 new articles and enhancing existing ones with locally relevant information. The edits made improved the visibility of Kwami's culture, history, and significant local events.
Key learning: Training participants to contribute content that reflects their community's unique identity is motivating and impactful. This localized approach encourages pride in contributions and ensures that underrepresented topics receive attention.
Did the project build a Wikimedia community? The project laid the foundation for a budding Wikimedia community in Kwami by connecting new editors with existing writers' clubs and encouraging ongoing collaboration. This has fostered a sense of belonging and support among participants, who continue to share knowledge and updates through communication channels established during the project.
Key learning: Community building requires continuous engagement. Initial training and workshops must be supplemented with post-event support, such as online forums or local meetups, to maintain momentum and cultivate a sustainable network.
Application of learnings for the future:
Enhanced training modules: Future projects will integrate more collaborative exercises and peer review sessions to strengthen skills and foster community engagement.
Long-term support systems: Establishing mentorship programs and maintaining regular check-ins with new contributors can help retain editors and promote continued activity.
Strategic partnerships: We plan to deepen partnerships with local institutions and community organizations to facilitate ongoing awareness campaigns and training opportunities.
These learnings will guide the design and execution of future projects, ensuring that new initiatives continue to recruit active contributors, create awareness, enrich Wikimedia content, and build cohesive communities.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
During the implementation of the Wikimedia Awareness in Kwami project, several unexpected yet positive developments enriched the experience. One notable surprise was the stronger-than-anticipated interest from community leaders and educators. Their proactive engagement not only boosted attendance but also sparked discussions on integrating Wikimedia into local educational initiatives, teaching us the importance of involving influential figures from the start. Additionally, a few participants emerged as local champions, quickly mastering the training content and mentoring others, which shifted the project towards a more community-driven model. This highlighted the value of empowering individuals to lead and sustain future engagement. Another positive outcome was the participants' enthusiasm for creating articles that showcased their local history and culture, leading to unique content contributions that enriched Wikimedia projects. This experience reinforced the need for training that emphasizes local knowledge and representation. These unexpected results have provided valuable lessons for future projects, showing the benefits of community leadership, strategic partnerships, and a focus on culturally relevant content creation.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
Our plan to share the project's learnings and results with the community includes hosting knowledge-sharing sessions and creating accessible resources. We will organize community forums and workshops to present key findings, outcomes, and strategies developed during the project. Additionally, digital platforms such as social media, webinars, and newsletters will be used to reach a broader audience and engage them in discussions about the project's impact. If applicable, radio broadcasts and partnerships with local media will disseminate information to ensure comprehensive coverage.
To reinforce ongoing community engagement, we will also collaborate with schools and local organizations to share project results and encourage replication of best practices. By documenting and publishing case studies and success stories, we will create materials that can serve as reference points for future projects and community initiatives. If any learnings have already been shared, they were presented through preliminary community meetings and updates during project activities, fostering transparency and feedback.
