Kwami stands as one of the largest local government in Northern Nigeria, boasting a population that exceeded 195,298 people in the 2006 Nigerian census. At present, the region houses nearly a million residents, in addition to hosting a university focused on science and technology, a health and nursing college, writers' clubs and associations, as well as an array of other institutions spread across its landscape. Despite these considerable advancements, the community faces a distinct lack of editors, let alone initiatives aimed at promoting Wikipedia involvement.

As an active member of this community fortunate enough to have encountered Wikipedia, I feel a responsibility to initiate the inaugural Wikimedia promotion campaign and training program in Akko. This effort aims to foster the growth of new editors and inspire the emergence of dedicated champions for Wikipedia projects. The primary objective behind raising awareness about Wikipedia and its affiliated projects in Kwami is to establish a strong foundation for the widespread adoption and utilization of Wikimedia products among the youth.

Furthermore, the proposed month-long initiative holds the potential to address content gaps present in articles covering diverse topics. With the assistance of experienced editors, we can enhance coverage for many significant local and international scholars, organizations, historical and research sites, tourist attractions, and more in Kwami that currently lack representation on Wikipedia.

In contrast to other communities that have benefited from a series of training sessions and the presence of Wikimedia groups, Kwami has never experienced any form of training or awareness efforts related to Wikimedia projects and how individuals can contribute to them. If approved, this project will establish the very first Wiki community meetup in Kwami. This meetup will serve as a means to stay connected with ongoing and future Wikipedia activities in the community, as well as to track the journey of editors as they evolve into new Wikipedia champions from Kwami

Approaches

The project's objectives encompass training and recruiting 50 fresh editors from different higher education institutions, writers' groups, and youth associations within Kwami. This initiative aims to facilitate the active involvement of students and young individuals from various establishments, clubs, and associations within the targeted community.

The plan also entails raising awareness about Wikimedia projects among participants in Kwami. While many may be acquainted with English Wikipedia, only a few are familiar with other languages such as Hausa. Given that Hausa is the prevalent language in the community, the Wikipedia training initiative will prioritize Hausa Wikipedia, along with other Wikimedia sister projects that emphasize free knowledge and open information access. This tailored approach aims to fulfill the community's specific needs.

An essential aspect of the project involves establishing a community of Wikimedia Editors in Kwami. . Collaboration with the Hausa User group will aid in project execution and community sustainability. Additionally, a WhatsApp group will be created for the new editors to foster interaction and support.

Participants will receive training on contributing to the focused Wikimedia projects. This includes tasks like creating a Wikipedia account, grasping core content policies, comprehending general editing principles, generating new articles, making minor edits, and enhancing content related to individuals, locations, organizations, and more.

To ensure effective progress tracking and support, the project will leverage offline and online editors. The outreach dashboard will be utilized for contribution monitoring, and personalized assistance will be provided through one-on-one interactions.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project aims to introduce Wikipedia to the community of Kwami over the course of a month through various activities. The Wikipedia Promotions in Kwami initiative will encompass five distinct sessions, all contributing to the establishment of a Wikimedia community.

The project will begin with a two-day, in-person workshop. Three out of the five facilitators will lead these physical sessions, focusing on providing participants with fundamental knowledge about Wikipedia. Attendees will have the opportunity to create accounts and make minor edits on-site.

Following the workshop, there will be two series of online reinforcement training sessions. These segments, facilitated by the project's two online facilitators, aim to enhance participants' editing skills on platforms like Wikipedia and Wikicommons. The online training will fine-tune their editing abilities and address areas where they may need improvement.

As the final component of the project, a one-day, in-person review session will be held after a two-week interval. This period allows participants to practice and apply the knowledge gained during the earlier sessions. The subsequent two-week Edit-a-thon will recognize outstanding contributors with certificates of excellence. A WhatsApp group will be employed to foster engagement, address queries, and encourage ongoing editing efforts. The project will conclude with a final in-person training day, where participants' work will be reviewed, questions clarified, and certificates awarded.

Moreover, the project's culmination will involve the formation of a Wikimedia editors' community in Kwami which is designed to ensure the sustainability of the project's impact
