  • Username of Applicant: araisyohei
  • Name of Organization: N/A

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The activities in this section focused on multiple editions of the Edit-a-thon. Locations ranged from Hokkaido to Kyushu. In addition, although we did not use grant funding, each member of the team was able to be active in a wide range of locations, such as teaching Editorathon at GLAM. The following is a list of the main organisational venues in which the constituents participated, regardless of whether or not grant funding was used. Some initiatives were reported on the blog and some were submitted by participants.

  • National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo
  • Akihabara, Tokyo.
  • Sumida, Tokyo.
  • Omiya, Saitama
  • Shibetsu, Hokkaido
  • Kaga, Ishikawa
  • Aisho, Shiga
  • Anan, Tokushima
  • Tsushima, Nagasaki

Each of these was addressed in cooperation with local participants and Wikimedians on matters related to the region.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Many of the large numbers of people who have no experience of editing Wikipedia do not know how to do academic writing. There was a lot of trial and error, including working on worksheets to summaries key points from a variety of sources.

Showing them articles that had been edited at another event helped them to know what they had reached in a day and then they could start editing.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Our initiatives have helped us to communicate the Wikimedia concept to various stakeholders, including local authorities, schools and businesspeople. It also ranged from teenagers to people in their 70s. We were able to receive many contacts from people we met there, who presented reports on our efforts so far.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

As a top priority, participants were explicitly encouraged to rediscover local assets and develop their information literacy skills. The initiative was successful in fulfilling this objective. This is made clear in the blog post.

It was found from earlier interviews that one of the main aims was to increase participants' knowledge of the local assets in which they themselves currently live and work. school-collaborative-wikipedia-editathon-in-japan/.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

We received many opportunities from the participants of the event, including proposals for the next event. Similar examples have been Wikipedia20 and Wikipedia18 and other offline events we have organized, we had the opportunity to follow up on this.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Some said that previous edit-a-thons had simply concentrated too much on producing quality content, which was a burden on the local community. In a previous online event organized by one library, the challenges for the future were described as follows. 'With so many events being held, the lack of people to facilitate Wikipedia Town in the county is a challenge. We would also like to develop a framework for the training of personnel with such interest and passion, so that they can share the same philosophy and attitude. Public libraries in the prefecture will continue to respond to the demands of the community by securing library personnel to pilot the various initiatives related to Wikipedia [1]." In this context, it was felt that in order to work with the local community, it was first necessary to foster a community with the local community. Regardless of whether the grant was used or not, we worked while taking into consideration the continuity of the initiatives as well as the building of the local community, which is becoming increasingly rare.
