Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The Mon community's first Wikipedia project aims to increase awareness about Wikipedia. To achieve this, we're implementing micro and macro strategies. Our micro approach involves five Edit-a-thons.

Edit-a-thons: Our short film about Wikipedia and the Edit-a-thon was released on Mon Wikipedia's Facebook Group Page and some other personal social media pages on March 6, 2023. It garnered 1.8K views on Group Page and 1.7K views on Bee Htaw Monzel's personal page in five days. The first Edit-a-thon on March 11 had 27 participants, offering an introduction to Mon Wikipedia, essential Wikipedia aspects, article evaluation, source assessment, and basic article creation. The second Edit-a-thon on March 25 involved 16 participants, delving into Wikipedia Page administration, editing tools, and addressing editing-related queries. The third Edit-a-thon on May 20 focused on answering editing-related questions. Due to the extremely limited electricity supply and poor internet connection, many people were unable to join the editing and contribute to Wikipedia. In some areas, electricity is only available for three hours a day. As a result, we have decided to halt our Edit-a-thon.

Our macro strategy involves public meetings in Mon national schools. Due to unstable politics in Burma, we couldn't execute our initial plan. Our members can only hold public meeting in Mudon and Kyainseikgy Towship. For other townships we send our materials and video about our project to schools.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Our short film about Wikipedia proved to be effective, generating increased awareness among people. As a result, we were able to attract 27 participants to our first edit-a-thon.

However, we found that our initial edit-a-thon focused extensively on Wikipedia Essentials, covering topics such as verifiability, notability, and reliable sourcing. This approach inadvertently intimidated some potential contributors, causing them to shy away from editing Wikipedia. Many expressed feelings of inadequacy, believing they lacked the necessary competence to make meaningful contributions. Additionally, some individuals mentioned that they were hesitant to participate due to a perceived lack of suitable sources to contribute to Wikipedia.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

N/A

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Have our Edit-a-thons been effective in increasing the number of qualified and active members?

The answer is both yes and no. Our edit-a-thon initiative began on March 11, 2023. In March, a total of 62 new pages were created, followed by 114 new pages in April. Unfortunately, due to severe limitations in electricity supply and poor internet connections, many individuals were unable to contribute to Wikipedia.

Have we effectively guided potential contributors and existing contributors to the Visual Teaching Pages or the Help page?

The process of uploading video files to Wikipedia for our Teaching Pages and Help page has not been straightforward. We encountered challenges in uploading these files directly, leading us to post them in our Mon Wikipedia Facebook Group instead. Although these videos were viewed, the level of engagement was not as high as desired.

Does public meetings give more public awareness? Yes, all middle and high school students, as well as teachers, were introduced to Wikipedia and learned how to use it. They were shown how to install the Wikipedia App on their mobile devices and received a brief introduction on how to contribute to Wikipedia. Additionally, each student and teacher received an exercise book, and our team provided schools with a world map. People were very pleased with our World Map because it was the first world map available in both Mon and English.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Due to the extremely limited electricity supply and poor internet connection, many people were unable to join the editing sessions and contribute to Wikipedia articles. In some areas, electricity is only available for three hours a day. As a result, we have decided to halt our Edit-a-thons.

The conflict between the military government and the Karen rebel group, People’s Defense Force (PDF), is escalating, putting people at risk from both government troops and rebels. Traveling between townships has become unsafe for our members. In response, we have adapted our plan. Our members are only able to hold public meetings for Mon Nationals in Mudon and Kyainseikgy Townships. For other townships, we send our printed materials and a video about our project directly to schools.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We require greater engagement with Wikipedia on social media platforms, such as creating short films.

In the initial stages of the Edit-a-thon, it's advisable not to overly emphasize verifiability, notability, and reliable sourcing.

We maintain our belief that there's a need for heightened public awareness about Wikipedia within the Mon community.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics[edit]

10a. Open Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.
