Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?

Strategy 1, Activity 1: A Wiktionary introductory workshop has been organised with the public school teachers of the aboriginal Semai language with the collaboration of the Perak State Education Department. It was the first time a Wikimedian even was held in the state of Perak. This activity was implemented hugely with the support and collaboration with the department. Other than the event is the WikiGap workshop with the Swedish Embassy in collaboration with the students of Universiti Malaya.

Strategy 3, Activity 1

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?

Yes especially Strategy 1, Activity 1. One of our main objectives is to narrow the content and representation gaps (i.e. under represented communities). Organising the workshop helps the underrepresented community ie. aboriginal people to discover Wikimedia projects and use them to preserve their language and culture.

3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?

The challenge that we faced was having more people to help in organising the events. It would be more efficient if there were more people in helping us even though having only person was enough for organising the event. This is to have more impact and efficient so that the event will be able to reached the desired goal more.

4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.

The targeted community ie. underrepresented community participated in the work we are doing from our partners who helped communicate with the community and make them join our work. For example, the Perak State Education Department helped us by contacting the aboriginal Semai teachers to join the Wiktionary workshop.

5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.

The workshop in particular helped to engage participants and build content for the underrepresented group ie. Semai community. There was not that much free knowledge online on the language. However with the workshop, we had created a lot of lemmas of the language in Malay Wiktionary. This help to increase the online visibility and presence of the language and community.

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What have you learned so far about these areas during this period?

I have learned that it is more effective to organise an event with more people to help rather than doing it alone. This was proven in the WikiGap event where we received help from the students of Universiti Malaya to co-organise the event.

7. What are the next steps and opportunities you’ll be focusing on for the second half of your work?

Due to the delay of the account opening, we will be focusing on Malay Wikipedia 20th birthday and also Wikipedia Asia Month in collaboration with the Japan Embassy in Malaysia.
