Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Wikimedia Sverige – Supporting an equitable free knowledge movement by expanding our global initiatives and local fundraising/Yearly Report (2022)/Learning priorities

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

In our application we listed 11 areas where we hoped to learn more:

  1. Access: Hub focus – Through multiple conversations, a larger needs assessment with in depth conversations and a number of surveys around software needs we have developed a strong understanding around the needs for successful content partnerships. Based on our findings and understanding (which is building upon years of experience in the field) we have continuously iterated on the experiments we initiated in the beginning of the project.
  2. Access: Recognition of hubs – We are still not sure about this as the work by the interim Global Council has not progressed as much as we hoped. Our discussions have led us to understand that we must focus on formal confirmations of willingness to engage in the hub work.
  3. Access: Information access – We have started experimentation around MetaBase and also expanded our work around SDC and experiments to connect databases together with GLAM partners in Sweden. We have learnt a lot of the needs of IGOs when sharing content and to guide them on what to share with the most impact for the WM community.
  4. Access: Norm changes – Our work with both political issues and decision makers within organizations has increased our understanding on what material must be developed and what the issues and priorities will be in the coming years.
  5. Use: Wikispeech – Smaller language communities have shared their struggles with commercial solutions and the needs for FOSS solutions, where they can contribute, to be developed.
  6. Use: Speech data collection – This work was canceled this year as we could not secure funding.
  7. Community: Regional engagement – We have learnt a lot about the possibilities and limitations with local organizations and with national civil society actors. We have experimented on how to engage local media.
  8. Community: Movement leaders – We have taken important steps to establish complete sets of training modules for different target groups on learn.wiki. This will be expanded and evaluated in 2023/2024. We learnt about the platform needs we have for such a solution.
  9. Community: Supporting existing communities – We experimented with work around support for volunteer developers and with hand on support for volunteer communities. From this we learnt a lot of what needs to be developed further.
  10. Enabling: Funds for the movement – We learnt about CRM needs, about how to fundraise better, how to best receive bequests. We did a joint project with WM Uganda and learnt a lot regarding joint applications with non-European affiliates and this opportunity space. We initiated discussions on how to provide funding for WM activities in countries under US sanctions.
  11. Enabling: Fundraising communication – We experimented with scripts for how to communicate our work during fundraising events and face-to-face initiatives.
