Project Goal[edit]

We want build a full language support for the Gurenɛ Wikipedia incubator, create more articles and translate all the most commonly used messages on media as one of the requirements for a new language Wikipedia request.
We want to build the foundation that all of the Gurenɛ and the Frafra communities may leverage on to start new projects for their dialects in future.
We want to start translate all the media Wiki messages from English to Gurenɛ on translatewiki.net.

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

We will be organizing online and offline training workshops to equip the community with the skills they will need to be able to participate in translations. We will use this project as an opportunity to translate all the most commonly used media Wiki messages in Gurenɛ on translate Wiki.
We will invite interested groups and organizations to participate in as translators or advisors.
We will reach out to students and teachers who are currently learning or teaching the Gurenɛ language.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

One (1) training for two sets of groups and two online editathons sessions

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

  • Dagbani WIkimedians subpages
  • Gurunɛ Wikimedia Community
Targeting these groups will enable us to:
  • Recruit native speakers of the Gurenɛ language to participate in the project
  • Provide general Translatewiki.net training for people who have indigenous knowledge about the community language and are inspired to digitize these valuable orthographies on wikipedia.
  • Establish collaborations with Gurenɛ language department of the University of Education, Ghana.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We would share the link on our social media platforms and Wikimedia mailing list not excluding;
  • Dagbani WIkimedians subpages

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

The project will focus on translating the most commonly used messages on media Wiki at ranslatewiki.net. We plan to do this using the active membership of the Gurenɛ Wikimedians which currently has around 209 membership.
The sub-project leads are as follows:
  1. Shahadusadik - Will provide technical and general support
  2. Dnshitobu - Will facilitate and lead training sessions
  3. Uprising Man - Project lead, will coordinate all project activities including communication and logistics
  4. Prof. Ephraim Avea - Gurenɛ language professional and expert
  5. Akakiiri - He holds a Master degree in Gurenɛ

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high-quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes!

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We would continue discussion on the social media group especially the WhatsApp and Telegram page

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Yes. Risk Assessment protocol

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project will serve as a breaking-ground to improve the content of the Gurenɛ language on Wikimedia projects.
By the end of the exercise, the group would have translated 100% of the most commonly used messeges on Media Wiki as a requirement for requesting for a new language Wikipedia.
