IUP Edit-a-thon 2020
This grant would support an interdisciplinary Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon at Indiana University of Pennsylvania to be held October 23, 11am-2pm EDT, as well as two editorial training workshops leading up to the event, to be held September 30 and October 15, 1-3pm EDT prior to the main event.All events will be ONLINE, conducted by Zoom webinar. The event's primary foci include recruiting new Wikipedia editors, and engaging students and faculty in editorial work that improves content on and of interest to women and LGBTQ+ identities across as well as topics related to literature, language representation, translation, and global knowledge equity.

Project Goal[edit]

  1. Recruit new editors, particularly multilingual speakers, female population, those interested in languages and translation, as well as arts and feminism within the academic community of Indiana University of Pennsylvania
  2. Increase skills for existing editors
  3. Add or improve content on representation of languages across Wikipedia, especially articles on women artists around the world. Improve Wikipedia's accuracy of the same articles but in different languages.
  4. Integrate the Edit-a-thon into spring courses across academic disciplines
  5. Hold two editorial training workshops leading into the event in order to increase the success of the event

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Series - Two 3-hr training workshops leading up to a 4-hour edit-a-thon event

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

This event will be advertised to the University community through the following methods: (1) targeted emails to previous participants, heads of department, and previously identified individuals with specific interests in digital literacy and art and feminism issues, translation studies, multilingual sections of English composition courses (2) advertisement on the University's daily news bulletin, "IUP Daily" (3) advertisement on the website of the University's Center for Digital Humanities and Culture website, (3) advertisement on social media through University Libraries, Composition and TESOl association, faculty meetings (4) word-of-mouth, (5) flyers, posters and signs on campus

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes, user:Matthewvetter is the primary experienced Wikipedia editor. I am a Wikipedia editor with approximately 1000 edits (see user contributions) and have been an active participant as an instructor in the Wiki Education Program - having taught 11 Wikipedia assignments, and led four previous Edit-a-thons (see Wiki Ed Profile). Co-facilitors also have editorial experience from our previous Edit-a-thon held in March 2017, March 2018, and March 2019 at the same institution (Indiana University of Pennsylvania).

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants will have access to Wiki Education Program training modules and additional in-person training (as needed and requested) before the event, depending on their expressed level of interest and engagement. Instructors interested in building the event directly into their spring course curricula will also have access to in-class tutorials and trainings offered by myself. We will also provide rolling tutorials and demonstrations on-site during the actual Edit-a-thon. Equipment provided for the event will include two computer labs with multiple computers for editors to use during workshops and main edit-athon event. Curriculum materials will include a list of stub-, start-, and c-class articles on issues relevant to women across different subjects, women representation in arts, articles in various languages that need improvement or information is not accurate, or some information has been altered due to translation, as well as source material in the form of books, booklets, article, and reference works.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will conduct a survey to gain understanding of participants' experiences while participating at the event.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

With this event, we are trying to do more to support participant success and engagement with the Edit-a-thon by facilitating two editorial training workshops leading up to the event. Lat year, workshop sessions were highly successful, as students were better prepared for the main edit-a-thon event. They were able to do more edits and use their time productively at the event.


How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events - 3
  2. Number of participants - 70-80
  3. Number of new editors - 40-50
  4. Number of of articles created or improved - 60
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) - 30


What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

4-5 facilitators, with varying levels of Wikipedia literacy, who have planned, organized, and executed the same event last year will be an important resource for this event. The grant proposer, user:Matthewvetter, has more experience editing and teaching Wikipedia writing projects. Two computer labs will be provided by the library for the workshops and main edit-athon event. This space with wifi, seating is provided by the university. Students (both previous and current, in Spring 2020) of Vetter's will be thoroughly trained through the Wiki Education Program and will help facilitate the event.
