Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Wikipedia is for many the main source of information, undoubtedly incomplete. The problem concerns a disproportion in the number of articles devoted to women. Information about women are just seeds or do not exist. According to statistics, the participation of women and seniors in editing is really low. Each ediathon is dedicated to creating Wikipedia entries about outstanding women artists and women art researchers of the 20th and 19th century.
We plan to organize eight ediathons, one each month from March to December (not including holiday months) within the frameworks of the Art+Feminism and Wikiprojekt:kobiety initiatives. The first event will be held on 13th of March, being part of the Art+Feminism 2020 campaign "Art+Activism". Each editathon will be preceded by a short training, which will allow new participants to easily join the events. Ediathons will take place every second Friday of the month from 16:00 to 20:00. The meeting place will be Barbara – open cultural space in the heart of the city, a cafe and an info point which was opened during European Capital of Culture celebrations.
We have experience in organizing edith-a-tons, the last one (#3) was conducted on 18th of January. We have already organized two trainings and the third is planned for February. Their list can be seen at https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiprojekt:GLAM/Kolektyw_Kariatyda/Wydarzenia

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

You will be able to find out information about the events thanks to: facebook, our page on Wikipedia, broadcast by Radio Luz. We are going to distribute posters, leaflets, send emails with invitations. We will publish information in such places as: Wroclawianin.info, Wroclaw.pl, Co jest grane, Gazeta Wrocławska, Radio Wrocław, Magazyn Miasto Kobiet, Arteon, Artpunkt, Dwutygodnik, Obieg, Magazyn Sztuki, ArsForum, Codzienniki Feministyczne, Fundacja Feminoteka, Fundacja Kobieca eFKa.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes, we cooperate with Celina Strzelecka who has been working for the Wikimedia Polska Association as a GLAM specialist since April 2018. She conducted the first workshop for the entire Caryatid team (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Warsztat_edytowania_Wikipedii_2019-02-23). She is present at every meeting, to which she additionally invites other experienced Wikipedia volunteers who help beginners.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We offer a limited amount of our equipment – computers, projector, stationery, Internet. If necessary, we will arrange rental equipment. We will provide materials such as magazines and books with an artistic profile. We are going to provide a list of people whose biographies are worth examining and describing. We offer our help in editing articles and advice of our experienced Wikipedia specialist. The workshops before ediathons will allow participants to learn about the technical issues of using the Wikipedia site, as well as a professional approach to editing scientific texts.
The Caryatid Collective members active by now have both skills and the necessary equipment (private computers). Our group consists of art historians and people associated with the art academy. We are specialists in the field of women's art. We know the names of women who should have biogaphic Wikipedia articles. We know bibliographic sources that should be used to write articles. We share our knowledge with meeting participants and help them write articles.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Participation in events enables joining the Caryatid Collective. We would like to encourage new people to be active in our team. Thanks to this, each event will be more accessible, open to everyone. New members can also join in activities remotely. Moreover, participants will be able to use the acquired skills in the future by continuing the work of a Wikipedia editors in various fields.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

There have been events dedicated to women and art in Poland, but we are the first group acting on a regular basis. As such we are gaining recognition in Poland and inspiring other people in Poland. We are receiving more and more invitations to do trainings and share our skills from different cities (Iwona Demko – Kraków, Agnieszka Rayzacher (lokal_30 gallery) and Magda Ujma – Warsaw, Agata Zbulut – Szczecin). We have also produced a paper zine to spread the idea of contributing to Wikipedia and present it as a creative, fun and a fulfilling activity https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plik:Kariatyda_zin.pdf

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 8
  2. Number of participants: 80 (for all meetings)
  3. Number of new editors: 10
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: 50
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 8
Number of events - 8 meetings (March, April, May, June, September, October, November, December). 10 people will participate in each meeting. Participants will enter their user name on the Wikiproject list, as was the case with earlier editathons (https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiprojekt:GLAM/Kolektyw_Kariatyda/Wydarzenia) As a result, the number of participants and number of repeat participants will be known.
Participants' users name will be entered into the Kolektyw Kariatyda program in the Outreach Dashboard, as was the case with previous events (https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Kolektyw_Kariatyda_i_Wikimedia_Polska/Kolektyw_Kariatyda). As a result, the number of new editors, number of of articles created or improved will be known.
Also, to all new articles and changes we will be adding a template of a broader project – pl:Wikiprojekt:Kobiety/info – to make our contributions part of a larger program of Polish Wikipedia improvement.

Resources[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We are an informal group of women educated in the field of cultural studies, art history and / or art. Together we create the Collective Caryatid. Each of us has more or less experience in organizing various events, e.g. under foundation projects supporting artistic and educational activities in Wrocław. As a collective, we realised the first project on 23/02/2019. We plan to expand our project - we would like to encourage new people to actively participate in the collective.
Each person from the collective will coordinate a different area of work: promotion, service of participants, mertory issues, financial issues plus shopping, graphic designs and photographic documentation. Media patronage includes: The Art and Feminism initiative, BWA Wrocław, Strefa Kultury Wrocław.
We have the assurance from Wikimedia Polska that Celina Strzelecka's working hours is a WMPL "donation" for this project. In addition, we will apply to Wikimedia Polska for funding for the second issue of "Bravo, Girls!", An artistic zine on editing Wikipedia by women and about women.
We also have an agreement with Infopunkt Barbara in the city centre that they will host us in the Workshop Room and provide us with all the essential technical (tables, internet connection, electricity etc.) and promotional support. Thus will enable us to gain more visibility in the public space.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

artistic profile books - 1000 zł
souvenirs for participants - 300 zł
printing training materials? - 100 zł
printing leaflets and posters - 1300 zł
roll-up printout - 50 zł
roll-up stand - 250 zł
meal/treat - 4000 zł
TOTAL - 7000 zł = ca. 1830 USD

  • I took part in one of the edit-a-thons, I know organizer both personally and in connection with Wikimedia projects. I support this initiative as I'm sure it'll be well-organized and successful, not only in the terms of articles themselves but also for local community. Soldier of Wasteland (talk) 12:41, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Support Support The work of the collective has achieved some notability in Polish Wikipedia. In my opinion, the budget requested in the submission is just fair for the project targets and I strongly believe that it will be spent well. However, I'd just suggest to include an additional position in the budget for small grants (< 15 USD for a return ticket) that will allow the people from more distant parts of Lower Silesia and Opole voivodeship (with limited access to cultural events, hosted mostly in big cities) to join the events without incurring additional costs on the participants. The region is not homogenous in terms of purchasing power and the inclusion of poorer regions shall be considered. Bonvol (talk) 23:08, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Support Support Hearing about the first event organized by the Caryatid Collective last year motivated me to finally join the community of Polish Wikipedia. Even though I could not participate on-site, it showed me that there's a group of like-minded editors with whom I share common goals, which gave me the confidence to start editing; I have since written over 60 articles on Polish Wikipedia and worked upon many more. I believe that spreading awareness of the Wiki gender gap among those interested in art and feminism history is an important step towards bridging the gap and that the Collective is working hard towards this goal.
