Project Goal[edit]

  1. To engage new editors and collaboration / support educational institutions of Botswana, engaging more school students.
  2. To improve / increase skills of existing editors
  3. To add more and improve content of articles (English and Setswana)
  4. Recruit new editors
  5. To get boost for outreach activities in Botswana.

There is less awareness about Wikipedia and its sister projects (Wikimedia commons) among people of Botswana Gaborone, to improve this lack of awareness, planning Wikimedia Botswana is done followed by weekly workshop which will take place over a period of 2 months and 2 weeks.

The aim of the Summit will be to generate interest among Students about Wikipedia editing and photo uploading on Wikimedia commons. The weekly workshop will consist of the following topics:

  1. Introduction to Wikipedia for Newbies
  2. Wikipedia Editing
  3. Photo Upload tutorial on Wikimedia Commons
  4. Explaining more about the Wikimedia Sister projects.

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings? On the set date 1 March 2017 there will be a town level Wikipedia meet-up and for the next 2 months there will be weekly Wikipedia workshop conducted by volunteers planning Wikimedia Botswana User-group.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? We have a meeting discussion page dubbed the Wikipedia Wednesdays, therefore we will post updates on meetings here and a Wikimedia Botswana page. https://www.facebook.com/WikipedaWednesdaysBotswana/?hc_ref=SEARCH https://www.facebook.com/Wikimedia-Botswana-580131065335410/
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? I have joined wikipedia in 2013 , and I am an editor in the Tswana Wikipedia. Since 2015 we have conducted the Wiki related workshop called the Wikipedia Wednesday where training of new and existing editors took place at the University of Botswana library, and during that period we had many people interested in joining to support the mission of Wikipedia including the University of Botswana school of medicine students who took part in translating English medicinal articles in to Setswana. Recently I (Mompati Dikunwane) attended the Wiki indaba 2014 in Johannesburg South Africa,Wiki indaba 2017 in Accra Ghana and Oral Citation workshop in Otjinene Namibia. We have remotely engaged Felix Nartey from Wikimedia Ghana user-group to help in conducting the workshop.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We will be using a free space offered by Jwaneng mine public library with 5 desktop computers and the internet access will be provided by us.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will keep in touch through our Wikipedia Wednesdays and whats app and other social media. We will keep the team updated always with events and workshops.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Impact[edit]

  1. Number of events : Five spread over a period of 2 months and 2 weeks.
