Project Goal[edit]

Wiki Weekend 2016 aims to bring people SQ Wikimedians together as a community and to involve new Wikimedians in one or more Wikimedia projects with a focus in Wikidata and outreach activities this year. It is also a showcase of the activities and projects organized by the community the last 12 months and a planning session for the next year. More specifically we aim to:

  • reach potential contributors (since this edition of Wiki Weekend will take place at a high school);
  • create once again the meeting point for Wikimedians of SQ Wikipedia (empowering community connections);
  • showcase of the latest activities of the community such as Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Maps and more;
  • empowering the knowledge of local contributors though workshops from more experienced Wikimedians (with Wikidata in focus this year).

Project Plan[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

  • Call for speakers will be open for everyone to apply. We hope to attract as many applications as possible since the venue this year allows us to host more parallel sessions.
  • all the information is hosted to the dedicated microsite we are launching for the first time this year:;
  • We will also coordinate the design, printing and promotion of the event. This is considered a very important element of the promotional cycle of Wiki Weekend 2016;
  • Friday (before the main event) we will be hosting a reception pre-event for all participants in order to inform them about all the details of the agenda;
  • Saturday and Sunday parallel sessions will take place at a technical high school in Tirana. The labs will be used for workshops and edit-a-thons and the main room will host presentations from Wikipedians;
  • In this edition we are planning to continue collaboration with organizations and governmental institutions that are positive on sharing their data such as The National Library (are planning to be in talks with them), Municipality of Tirana etc;
  • The organizing team will make sure to have media coverage once again for this year as well;
  • Crucial role will also have our volunteers that will help the core organizing team to just as during previous editions;

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

  • mailing list (propably the most active mailing list about open knowledge and free open source software in Albania;
  • our website:;
  • social media profiles of our community that are really active (Facebook & Twitter);
  • monthly newsletter where Wiki Weekend will be featured as the main event of the month;
  • we will do our best to have media coverage before and after Wiki Weekend just as we have done during the previous editions.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

  • we are aware that following up has not been a strong point in the previous editions and we are planning to change this by registering all participants including their Wikimedia username and email. Post event follow up will be conducted for the next 4 weeks after the event.
  • this year we are also send a survey to all participants in order to understand what worked and what didn't.

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project: The workshops will take place at a technical high school near SOS Village for children and based on discussions with the school officials kids from the school will participate at the event as well. This will be the first time these kids will be exposed to Wikipedia editing and hopefully Wiki Weekend will be a lifechanging learning experience for them. In addition we are expecting an outcome as follows from all the participants (including the kids):

  1. Number of total participants: 150
  2. Number of articles created or improved (if applicable): 250
  3. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable): 50
  4. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects (if applicable): 50
  5. Number of articles with geoinformation added: 50
  6. Number of Wikidata enthusiasts: 5 (at least)
  7. Number of public officials from GLAM institutions: 5 (at least)

What resources do you have? Include information on who is the organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

  • Open Labs Hackerspace is a vivid tech community in Albania and a big pull of the volunteers will join us from there. We are expecting at least 8-10 volunteers to join us after the call for volunteers is launched)
  • The core organizing team (four Wikipedians)has organized the event before and are improving year by year and constantly learning and evolving Wiki Weekend in a not to be missed event for the local and regional Wikimedia community.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense:

  • Travel and accommodation (for volunteers outside the city and some of the speakers): 100€
  • Venue renting for meetups and storage of materials leading to the event and Friday where a reception is planned for the participants (3 days) = 340€
  • Design for visual ID of the event, posters, banners etc: 100€

Note: we have managed to have the majority of the resources on discount prices.

  • I had the opportunity to join last year's Wikipedia Weekend in Tirana. I was impressed of the well organized event, the commitment of the organizationalt team and the productivity during the event. This is the most important event for the Albanian Wikipedia community. Besides addressing new editors, we shared knowledge and learned a lot. The mayor of Tirana, Albania's capital, joined us for a good speach and they were able to take pictures and a soundbite from him. A director of a governmental cultural institution brought some traditional instruments – pictures were uploaded to Commons, kind of a mini GLAM project. In the last years, the Albanian Wikipedia is making big stepts forward regarding quality of content, and this annual meeting is an important event for all active editors from Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia to support this process. Please support. Albinfo (talk) 23:24, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
  • It is one of the most important events of the Albanian community in Wikimedia that is being organized for the third time. This annual event has helped our community grow, reflecting also on the Wikimedia projects. Liridon (talk) 08:23, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
  • This is one of the projects that i'll always be proud of. We have learned a lot during these 2 years and Wikimedia financial support helped our community a lot. This event is a must and i hope that this event will inspire more people and contributors to help/contribute on Wikimedia Albania. --Margott (talk) 09:14, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
