Grants:Project/Rapid/Shikeishu/XPOSED Queer Film Festival 2022/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? We reached all of our four goals. We are quite happy with how the project went, we had pretty clear expectations this time and attracted quite some new editors and created quite some new content. The workshops were promoted during the opening of the festival, on its website and in its booklet, also media outlets reported about the Wikipedia workshops and quite some people talked to the festival team about the workshops. Also other film festivals were interested in the concept of the workshops and approached us about possibly copying it. We definitely want to do this again in the upcoming years. The project and its results are documented at XPOSED Queer Film Festival 2022.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
    • Participants were really happy and proud about their new articles. Everyone understood quite easily how to edit and then everyone was involved in finishing or improving at least one article.
    • Filmmakers came to the workshop and provided photos for the articles about themselves that we could upload. They also could provide us with sources and resources that we otherwise wouldn't have found for our editing.
    • The venue was central and easily reachable, people could also come spontaneously.
    • People from within the volunteer team of XPOSED were really interested in the workshop and contributed actively to the editing.
  • What did not work so well?
    • Despite promoting the project on Wiki channels, we didn't attract many existing editors to the workshop.
    • One article was deleted on Spanish Wikipedia despite us showing clearly how the filmmaker is relevant. We had a really hard time understanding the reasoning and place this in the context of wider queerphobic backlash against queer content on Wikipedia.
  • What would you do differently next time?
    • We probably could have attracted more existing editors to the project by not just posting about the edit-a-thons on the German-speaking Wikipedia, but also by cooperating with existing networks such as FemNetz. We didn't do this enough and are planning a closer cooperation for the next year.
    • We didn't have the capacities last year, but we are still thinking about creating a more long-term editing group around queer film, possibly in cooperation with other festivals and existing editor networks.
