Grants:Project/Rapid/Spectra Meetup at the Joint Math Meetings

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

We will hold an editathon at the 2022 Joint Math Meetings. We will expand Wikipedia's coverage of LGBTQ+ people in STEM, and recruit new mathematics subject experts.

Spectra/Joint Math Meetings Meetup 2022
We aim to increase the representation of LGBTQ+ mathematicians on Wikipedia. We are holding a Meetup for Spectra, the organization for LGBTQ+ mathematicians. All 3 people facilitating this Meetup are members of Spectra and are experienced Wikipedia editors. We are: Keri Sather-Wagstaff, Marie A. Vitulli, and Ursula Whitcher.

Project Goal

[edit]
  • Recruit new editors

The attendees at the symposium are mathematicians who can provide expertise on articles about math and marginalized people in math.

  • Increase skills for existing editors
  • Add or improve content
  • Increase representation of LGBTQ+ mathematicians on Wikipedia

Project Plan

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are conducting a single editathon at the 2022 Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM), the largest annual meeting of mathematicians. We have a four-hour time slot where meeting participants can drop in for part or all of the event.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages. You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

We provided a link to our Meetup page on the Talk page for WikiProject_LGBT_studies.
The event is also cross-referenced at talk page for the Seattle Meetups.

3. How will you let participants know about the editathon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

  • We created a Spectra Meetup page for this event.
  • The event is highlighted on the Joint Mathematics Meetings webpage.
  • We sent out email messages via the Spectra listserv to announce the event and to get permission to identify people as members of the LGBTQ+ community on Wikipedia.
  • We will advertise the event on the Spectra website.
  • We advertised the event on the Association for Women in Mathematics Facebook page.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

  • Keri Sather-Wagstaff (User:ExtandTor) is a member of the WikiProjects Women in Red who has organized and contributed to multiple editathons, e.g., WERK and CREW. She has created biographies of women mathematicians on Wikipedia and has edited numerous Wikipedia pages.
  • Marie Vitulli (User:Mvitulli) is a member of the WikiProjects Women in Red and Women Scientists who has contributed to multiple Association of Women in Math (AWM) editathons. She has created biographies of women mathematicians and others on Wikipedia and has edited numerous Wikipedia pages. Vitulli has published articles on adding women in math to Wikipedia in the Notices of the AMS and the May-June 2014 issue of the AWM newsletter.
  • Ursula Whitcher (User:Ursulageorges) is a member of the Women in Red Wikiproject who organized editathons at the 2017 Association for Women in Mathematics Research Symposium and the 2018 Joint Mathematics Meetings and presented on Visibility and Wikipedia at the SACNAS 2018 Diversity in STEM conference.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants will bring their own laptops. We expect that the majority of participants will be research mathematicians, who are experienced in writing about technical subjects and using mark-up languages. We will provide a handout on how to get started on Wikipedia and point to articles one of the organizers created. We will use a projector and screen-sharing technology to demonstrate editing techniques without excessive physical proximity.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will use the Spectra mailing list to connect participants and share the results of the editathon.

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

All participants will comply with the JMM COVID-19 safety protocols, which require vaccination, masking, and daily risk assessments.

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project will support the mission of WikiProject LGBT Studies.

Impact

[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  • Number of events 1
  • Number of participants 25
  • Number of new editors 20
  • Number of of articles created or improved 20

Resources

[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

  • We do not have any other funding for this event. Organizers and attendees will bring personal laptops or tablets to the event.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

1 WiFi connection $300 We are requesting money for a WiFi connection in the Meetup room
2 Coffee for participants $342 We would like to offer coffee, tea & refreshments to participants
3 Registration $398 Conference registration of $318 for K Sather-Wagstaff (partial) and $80 for M Vitulli (retired)
4 Indirect Costs $208 Indirect costs calculated at 20% as specified by funding agency
Total: $1,248 total cost of project

Endorsements

Community members are encouraged to endorse your project request here!

  • Strong support Strong support I am happy to endorse this project and plan to participate as an editor at the JMM in Seattle. Having served as Editor of Mathematics Magazine from 2001-05, I have relevant experience to offer. I personally know that Marie Vitulli has excellent credentials for this project; Keri Sather-Wagstaff and Ursula Whitcher seem highly qualified as well. Helping Wikipedia to reflect the reality of LGBTQ+ mathematicians in its pages is a laudable goal. The buzz that Spectra will bring to this project makes for a perfect fit. -----Frank A. Farris
  • Strong support Strong supportI am happily endorsing this project which aims to highlight the work and experiences of LGBTQ+ mathematicians. This is a much needed work and Marie, Keri and Ursula are well-equipped to see the project carried through.

  • Strong support Strong support I think this project is extremely important, both for how it will enhance the Wikipedia content and for its ability to train and support new editors and mathematicians who might not otherwise feel comfortable in Wikipedia and/or mathematics environments. --- Theo Johnson-Freyd, Dalhousie University & Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.
