We are organizing an Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at Temple University's Japan Campus (TUJ) to be held on March 8, 2018 - this will be the first time this event has been held at TUJ and we aim to increase awareness of gender issues and create and improve Wikipedia entires on women in the arts in Japan.
targetOur #1 goal is to create and improve Wikipedia pages in English and in Japanese on women in the arts in Japan, as well as raising awareness about gender issues. Project Goal[edit]

  1. Add to the online presence of women in the arts in Japan
  2. Raise awareness of the need to get more women involved with creating online content in Japan and globally
  3. Add or improve content relating to gender and the arts
  4. Recruit new editors and increase skills for existing editors

Activities[edit]

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are planning an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon, including training sessions for those new to Wikipedia. We will have guest speakers to introduce participants to some of the issues around art and feminism and wikipedia in Japan. We hope to make it an annual event.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

We are talking with Wikipedia Japan and Wikipedian Kitamura Sae to arrange trainers and support for our event.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We have art, art history and gender studies professors to discuss issues around gender and the arts and also provide topics for editors, to help with sourcing information and writing entries. We also have several women who work in the art world (artists,a curator) who will be talking about gender and the arts. We also have the support of the university's IT department which is providing 24 laptops and wifi support. And the university library is providing source materials and support on the day.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will send follow up messages to participants with lists of entries made and improved and encourage everyone to continue to contribute to Art+Feminism and Wikipedia and join us again in 2019.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This is a first for Temple University's Tokyo campus and we would like to make this an annual event. Gender issues and the arts is not a topic that gets a lot of publicity in Japan and we would like to help to change that.

Resources[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We have are talking with a Japan based Wikipedian and are arranging for trainers for the event. We have the support of various professors at the univeristy as well TUJ's IT department, which is providing laptops and wifi, and the library, which will be providing research materials and support on the day. We have reserved the Student Parliament Lounge for the event. We have also applied for university funds to hire student workers to help organize the event.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

We would like to offer honoriums to various experts who have agreed to participate in the event. These include: Japanese artist Megumi Igarashi (aka Rokudennashiko), Gender Studies Professor Tin Tin Htun, Art historian Mayu Tsuruya, and Bloomberg tech journalist Marika Katanuma. We are waiting on confirmation for 2 other speakers.

To support this we would request:

  1. 6 honorariums for our guest speakers to help cover their transport, etc. at JPY10,000 per person = JPY60,000
  2. an honorarium for 2 Japanese-English translators to translate to English for 3 or more guest speakers at JPY10,000 per person = 20,000
  3. Food and drink: JPY20,000
  4. Miscellaneous supplies: name tags, printing, etc.: JPY10,000

TOTAL: JPY110,000(US$1026)
