Project Goal[edit]

Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".

  • Recruit new editors.
  • Add high quality content.
  • Promote the open knowledge and the Wikimedia Movement in Canary Islands.

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

Our main aim is to share the Wikimedia Movement in TLP Tenerife 2017, an event organized in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). During the event, Wikimedia España will have an stand to promote in which we work and to share the open knowledge. We hope to attract the attention of the event visitors and participants.
We will have an space equipped with computers, with which we are going to show how works the Wikimedia Movement and its projects, and how anyone can contribute. In this space, we are planning a thematic edith-a-thon, possibly about games, comics, manga, anime or Asian culture (main topics of the event).
Then, we have the possibility to present talks in TLP Innova (the section dedicated to teach about innovation and technology). Our proposal to Innova 7 (organizer of the event) was accepted. The talks will be presented by members of Wikimedia España and non-members. We are going to talk about the Movement and its projects, the interest of the libraries in the open access (a collaboration with the Library of University of La Laguna), museum with free knowledge (a collaboration with the Museum Castillo de Mata), how can contribute a photographer, tools, bots and structured data in Wikidata and about the projects in which we are working in Canary Islands. We are working in the talks yet.
Some days before the event (we are planning yet to make it as economical as possible) we have thought to make a wiki takes, possibly "Wiki Takes Museums of Tenerife", in which we would document the expositions of Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre (Museum of the Nature and the Man), Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos (Museum of the Science and Cosmos) and the Museo de Historia y Antropología (Museum of History and Anthropology). For that we are going to contact with the institution Museos de Tenerife (Museums of Tenerife), in charge of the management of these museums, to try to get free tickets (or at least with discounts) for every participant in the wiki takes. We want to promote it as an opportunity for these museums to share photographs of the items exposed.

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

First of all, we are going to share it in the mailing lists of Wikimedia España. We will try to share it in local journals, because the presence of the open knowledge is lacking in the Canary Islands, for this reason it usually cause a good stir when the media knows about it. We have contact with the media in which we have participated (TV Canaria and La Provincia), and we are sure that we will be able to contact with another.
Of course, we already have contacted with users from the Canary Islands, who might be more interested in these event. We will contact personally with each one to bring themself to participate in the activities proposed.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

Qualitatively, we will have promoted the Wikimedia Movement and its project, for this reason we hope an increment of the interest and, possibly, of users; we will have presented talks to spread the open knowledge and we will have collaborated with institutions and associations of Tenerife (University of La Laguna, Museums of Tenerife and Innova 7), and Gran Canaria (Museo Castillo de Mata).
Quantitatively, we will have document a museum without photographs in Commons (Museum of History and Anthropology) and another two museums without quality photographs (Museum of Science and Cosmos and Museum of the Nature and Man).
To follow-up the people involved:
  • Visitants. We are going to encourage to register in our announcement list to everyone who visit our stand. Of course, if they register an account we will check in the future if they are active or not.
  • Participants in our activities. As in the after point, we are going to encourage to register in our announcement list. We will check in the future if the users who participated continue participating.

Impact[edit]

We size the impact in Wikimedia with the next targets:

  1. Number of total participants
  2. Number of participants in each activity
  3. Number of articles created or improved (if we can organize the edit-a-thon)
  4. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as part of the wiki takes.
  5. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as part of the presence of the members we want to bring to Tenerife.
  6. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects.

Of course, we will gather every piece of information about our presence and the movement published in the media. With that we can size the range of audience.

Resources[edit]

Note: we are working in this yet, we have to calculate what expenses could be paid. We hope to publish this draft soon.

What resources do you have? Include information on who is the organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We have merchandising and a roll-up to promote the Wikimedia movement.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense:

  • Accommodation for the speakers outside Tenerife during the event.
  • Flights from Madrid to at least two speakers.
  • Ship from Gran Canaria to three speakers.
  • Subsistence expenses.
